Is Love Also the Truth?

What is more important?

Is it Love or is it the Truth?

Well, we know that the Scriptures teach us that the top two commandments are to...

(1) Love God.
(2) Love all other people (Matthew 22:36-40).

For He that does not love his brother or others does not know God (1 John 3:14) (1 John 4:8).

We also know that in having the assured knowledge (or the truth) that you are in a real right relationship with the Son of God = Eternal Life.

For He that has the Son has life, and He that does not have the Son, does not have life (1 John 5:12).

For Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

Jesus Christ is Omniscient and is the Lord of all knowledge and or truth (John 21:17).

For Jesus Christ is God Almighty who is Eternal, and created all things (Micah 5:2) (Colossians 1:14-17).

In fact, there is no greater love than that of a man (i.e. Jesus Christ) who laid down his life for that of his friends (Which is you and me) (John 15:13).

For God (i.e. Jesus Christ) is the very embodiment of love (1 John 4:8).

So what's more important again? Having a deep love for God and a healthy love for others? Or is it Truth (or in having the knowledge) that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and knowing that you are following Him?

For is not the Truth of knowing that you are secure in Christ (by His ability to forgive you) just as precious to you as loving God and loving others?

Do we see people loving God and loving other people and yet they do not have the truth or knowledge of being in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?

Can a Christian be just as loving to God and others as a non-believer who has not accepted Christ? What makes the Christian and a loving non-believer different?

Can a Christian have not love by possessing hate and unforgiveness in their heart and still know God? Do you think they can be hateful and unforgiving until they die and still be saved?

What I have come to the conclusion is that there is worldly love and worldly truth. Worldly love is a love that focuses primarily on one's own life, goals, and ambitions. Worldly love can include being kind, and generous to others. However, the motivation is usually self centered of one's ego and not God centered. Worldly truth steals the morals from the Bible in order to maintain order within a society and attempts to make their own truth that serves the needs of mankind or the individual.

And then there is Godly love (Which works in a true believer's life) that puts loving God and loving others first and then there is Spiritual Truth, which is having a right relationship with Jesus Christ.

In the secular worldview, love and truth are determined by the individual or by the world's standard. In the Biblical worldview, love and truth are determined by God (Of which we can learn more about if we study His Word).

In this example, love is more important than truth (i.a. all knowledge).

1 Corinthians 13:2 - "If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing."

Yet we are given a commandment to accept the Truth, by believing in Jesus Christ.

1 John 3:23 - "And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment."

Why does God reprove the world of sin?

John 16:8-9 - "For And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;"

Because they have not believed on the Truth, which is Jesus.
Having the knowledge of knowing how to love God and others is a Truth. In other words, taking this all into account and looking at 1 Corinthians 13:2, having love is more important than what a person believes to be is all knowledge of the the Truth or the Scriptures. For if they were to have all knowledge they would then know about the Truth or the knowledge about loving God and loving others.

Love is God and it is about allowing Him to work His will and love in your life.

Truth is God and it is about allowing Him to work His will and truth in your life.

For the perfection or end of Love and Truth is Jesus Christ.
Love and Truth both come from Jesus Christ.

Biblical love and truth at the core is Jesus and knowing in what He has done for us. For if we were to accept the Truth of how much God truly loves us, I believe greater things would happen in our lives as Christians.

So there is a fine line between Love and Truth. They almost seemed to be tied together as one. For you can't have love without the truth or knowledge about love. And you cannot have Truth or all knowledge if you do not love.

Dear Jason. True Love is also Truth. In Matthew 22: 35-40: Jesus tells us: " The first and great Commandment is:
Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour AS THYSELF, treat all you know and all you meet as you would love to be treated, always kindly and with friendly words.
In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told: " ask and you shall receive," ask for Love and Joy, then thank God and share all love and joy with your neighbour. God will see our loving efforts, and God will bless us. We keep asking for Love and Joy, then thank God and share all with our neighbour. We might stumble and forget at times, but then we ask God to forgive us, and carry on loving and caring.
The Bible tells us: " Repent and be Born Again, we give up all selfish desires and wishes, and be loving, kind and caring. The Holy Spirit will help and guide us, and Jesus our Saviour will lead us all the way: JESUS IS THE WAY.
In Luke 10, 25-28; Jesus is asked: " Master, what must I do to have Eternal Life? Jesus said: " You remember to
Love God with all your being, and love your neighbour as yourself? DO THIS AND YOU SHALL LIVE.
God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters. I say this with love, Jason. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

first of all, Love is a fruit of the Spirit, thus the kind of Love we are talking about in the above passages is not a worldly kind of Love but a Godly kind of Love and comes from God Himself. Thus without truth, there can be no Love but also without Love (God is truth) there can be no truth. You see, both are flowing out of God which we are told is Love....I John 4:8 as you already pointed out. But let me also point out to you that Love is the fulfillment of all the law and prophets, that makes it pretty important to understand. Matt. 22:40
For is not the Truth of knowing that you are secure in Christ (by His ability to forgive you) just as precious to you as loving God and loving others?
scripture tells us that this truth, of being secure in Christ, is an act of Love. It also tells us that if we truly Love God we will obey Him, with is evidence of the indwelling HS....not sure how many passages to present, Biblical Love is kind of my speciality, so anything you want passages for please ask.
Do we see people loving God and loving other people and yet they do not have the truth or knowledge of being in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?
the love you see in the unbeliever, is nothing more than an imitation of real Love. Real Love can only come from God being that God is the source of Love as seen above.
Can a Christian be just as loving to God and others as a non-believer who has not accepted Christ? What makes the Christian and a loving non-believer different?
To Love God means to obey HIm. I John 5:3 A non believer is not obedient to God thus is not Loving God at all. In fact, when we look at the difference between worldly love and Biblical Love it is striking. But also remember that Love has a purpose and that purpose is reconciliation. (Biblical Love) In fact, I Cor. 13 tells us that we can act with all kinds of actions of Love, but without that Love being there, we are just noise. This is because of Love's purpose. Love, that is real Love, Biblical Love doesn't just change situations but it transforms lives.
Can a Christian have not love by possessing hate and unforgiveness in their heart and still know God? Do you think they can be hateful and unforgiving until they die and still be saved?
now you are getting into some sticky stuff. In fact, it kind of goes off into OSAS theology at this point. Yet scripture is clear that the one who is abiding in Christ and Christ is abiding in them, will live in obedient Love.

Is Love Also the Truth?

What is more important?
Love, because truth relies on Love to exist. IOW's truth flows out of Love.

Many people don't get the simple truth of this, truth is the result of real Love. God is Love, therefore, real Love flows out of God into us and through us into the world. Without Love, truth could not exist.
For is not the Truth of knowing that you are secure in Christ (by His ability to forgive you) just as precious to you as loving God and loving others?
they are part of one another. Without the truth of Christ, Love cannot exist and without Christ's Love flowing through us, we have no truth. Love is the spoke of the wheel so to speak.
Do we see people loving God and loving other people and yet they do not have the truth or knowledge of being in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?
here you seem to speak of worldly love not biblical Love, they are vastly different from one another. In fact, worldly love is a counterfeit to real Love.
Can a Christian be just as loving to God and others as a non-believer who has not accepted Christ? What makes the Christian and a loving non-believer different?
Love fulfills all the law and prophets according to scripture, thus, the non believer who is still living in his sin, cannot be Loving with the Love of I Cor. 13 and Gal. 5.
Can a Christian have not love by possessing hate and unforgiveness in their heart and still know God? Do you think they can be hateful and unforgiving until they die and still be saved?
this crosses into OSAS theology, so we best leave that, but it does touch on the idea that Love and obedience to God are also connected so closely that we really can't separate them in our human minds. In fact, I John 5:3 tells us that Love for God is obedience to Him. I would not go so far as to say that it is impossible for a believer to sin, that seems contrary to scripture, but it does mean that if obedience is not a growing aspect of our faith, we need to take a good hard look at ourselves and our faith because God says that obedience is the result of us abiding in HIm and HIm abiding in us.
What I have come to the conclusion is that there is worldly love and worldly truth. Worldly love is a love that focuses primarily on one's own life, goals, and ambitions. Worldly love can include being kind, and generous to others. However, the motivation is usually self centered of one's ego and not God centered. Worldly truth steals the morals from the Bible in order to maintain order within a society and attempts to make their own truth that serves the needs of mankind or the individual.
not bad...it goes way deeper though.
And then there is Godly love (Which works in a true believer's life) that puts loving God and loving others first and then there is Spiritual Truth, which is having a right relationship with Jesus Christ.
there is also an all important goal to real, biblical, Godly Love and that goal means a lot to the whole topic and discussion of Love. The goal of Love is reconciliation, first to God than to one another.

For if they were to have all knowledge they would then know about the Truth or the knowledge about loving God and loving others.
amen

And you cannot have Truth or all knowledge if you do not love.
amen

In fact, the entire Bible is the Love letter of a Holy God to an unholy people...amen
Yes and then the question is how do we respond to His Love Letter to us. Jesus says to Love the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. This is the sum total of all the laws and all the prophets. Of course this requires understanding how to love yourself and how to love your neighbor.

we are told in scripture to Love God...our enemies...the foreigner...our neighbors...our brothers and sisters in Christ...a few others i could throw in for good measure
Each are to be carried out with the same Love we are talking about here, and yet each has some specific markers, for example, when we Love our neighbor, we are not to wear out of welcome.

I agree with you, Jason0047. Ultimately Love and Truth are one. This is manifest to us in Jesus Christ.

Can a Christian be just as loving to God and others as a non-believer who has not accepted Christ? What makes the Christian and a loving non-believer different? -------

Worldly love is a love that focuses primarily on one's own life, goals, and ambitions. Worldly love can include being kind, and generous to others. However, the motivation is usually self centered of one's ego and not God centered.

I agree. I want to center on this more thoroughly because it got me thinking. Worldly, Godless love is often egoistic, but not always. There is unselfish and sincere love that is nevertheless Godless and worldly. But this kind of unselfish and worldly love is aimed only at another human being, and it's ultimately aimed against God!

Two examples of unselfish, yet Godless love:

1. There is a Godless couple where the woman, for example, has masochistic desires, and she says to her husband: "If you really love me, you'll hit and spank me!". The husband sincerely feels caring emotions towards his wife and wants to fulfill her desires although spanking is not something he himself feels attraction to.

Whereas someone who believes in Jesus understands that fulfilling another human being's desires is not the definition of true Love – although it's something the world calls 'love'.

2. There is a homosexual Pride activist who says to a worldly humanist: "If you really love me, you'll accept my homosexual relationship morally!". The worldly humanist may sincerely care for the Pride activist's feelings and respect his/her autonomous view of love, and unselfishly conform to the Pride activist's moral demand.

Whereas someone who believes in Jesus understands that respecting another human being's autonomous choices and views is not the definition of true Love.

Jesus, in whom the Truth and Love are manifest, told us to love God with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbour as ourselves. These two commandments are tied together so that the first part defines the latter. In worldly love this tie is broken off, and hence the meaning of true Love is lost...

But worldly love still carries some elements in it that remind people of true Love: unselfishness and empathy. However, if one excludes God and only expresses unselfishness and empathy towards other human beings, it's not true Love. That's why the humanist thinking is, although often I believe sincere and unselfish, lacking integrity and power in this world.

This post is probably 'off-topicish', as it centered on this one point, but I got carried away with this interesting subject and wanted to share my thoughts :)

Yes, just yesterday I was reading up on George Lucas. He appears to be a nice and loving guy. He loves his wife and daughter; And his life is focused on Philanthropy (as the recent article had said of him). Meaning he is into helping people and doing loving things for them.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philanthropy

However, George Lucas calls himself a Methodist Buddahist, though. So his love is more descriptive of the world and it is not a Godly love that is founded on the Truth of the Bible. While I do care for George Lucas deeply, I do pray that he comes to know Godly love or Jesus Christ. For once a person truly knows Jesus.... then.... everything changes. Wordly things do not matter anymore. The world's morals and concerns are no longer your own. Your concerns are focused on the good things of the LORD and in accomplishing His will for your life (According to His Word). God is good. God is love. These are the true sources of love and goodness in a person's life. God's righteousness sets the bar of morality higher. But it is more than just living right alone. It is in knowing the Creator of the Universe and in truly experiencing His love and desiring in sharing that love with other people. For if one truly knows the LORD, then it will be His righteousness that flows thru you (And it is not your own righteousness). For we are nothing; And Christ (God) is everything.

So when someone asks me, what is love?

I tell them love is in knowing Jesus Christ. From there --- the LORD will guide them to read His Word and to pray for others. The LORD will guide them into paths of righteousness for His namesake. Not man's righteousness (Which you had described) but God's righteousness. That is if they let the seed of the Word (that they heard) take root within their heart so as to produce much fruit. For some have fell away due to persecution and some have fell away due to the cares and or riches of this life. For narrow is the way that leads unto life and few be there that find it.

Side Note:

But being loving towards your family and loving those of the world alone is not enough. Jesus even said that they who are evil know how to give good gifts unto their children. The Scriptures also say that the world loves it's own, too. But the world will not like or love those of us who are true believers, though. For the light shined in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not; And those who do evil hate the light, unless their deeds should be reproved.

In the End Times: The Antichrist will tempt people with a worldly love that they already have. He will be the guy who has helped alot of people. He will be the world's savior. He will be the guy who will be able to feed your family if you trust in him and take his mark. Seems loving and good to help one's family, no? He will be the guy who will be striving to bring about order in a world of chaos. But taking such a mark is closing the door forever on accepting GOD and in following His good ways. There is no hope for a person to be saved if they were to take the Mark. It's over for them (And they would have made their choice to follow the man of sin) and not the man Christ Jesus in truth and in love.

Here is the problem with saying that Love and truth are the same...I Cor. 13 says that Love rejoices in the truth. 1. if it rejoices in, it cannot be the same thing and 2. even some on this thread do not rejoice in truth, but instead, try to hide truth in the dark because they have never grasp that Love is not ashamed, because real Love sets us from from sin and death.

I do not think they are synonyms.
We love because we know the truth.
We know the truth because it was shown to us through love.
They benefit one another and can sometimes come about through one another.

We only have the capacity to love and to know the truth because of Jesus Christ and what He has done. Love and Truth is a person named Jesus Christ who then works His love and truth (or righteous good ways) within our life (According to His Word).
