• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Thank you faroukfarouk. I haven't though of that, mostly because I'm not very thrilled about getting more tattoos. I wish I'd never done it at all, but if I were going to get a coverup I definitely think there would be a faith element to it.
sparkle123:

YW. I guess that you're no longer in the category of an 18 year old (seems to be the age) who is either without tattoos or wondering whether to get a first tattoo; but rather in another ball park altogether, that of a more mature, already tattooed woman looking for the way forward, and if possible, a way forward that might even helpfully be faith promoting. So I guess for ppl in your situation, the issue is not, "Nothing faith based in case someone thinks the faith based design was obtained as a first timer and someone thinks it's not appropriate" (you don't have to answer to ppl who might think this way in any case). Whether anyone supposedly approves or not, you already are a tattooed woman who is confident to 'give a reason for the hope that is within' you (1 Peter 3.15). You might choose to do it in an exclusively oral way and by example; or you might as a person already visibly experienced under the needle opt to do it also with further input from the needle, but this time in a clearly God honoring design; I hope this makes some sense.

You must know your own thoughts, anyway; not a few Christians have had exactly the same choices to make. Blessings.

I've often thought of going to the parlor to see what might be done to pretty up my tats...just never seemed to get around to it.
PS: Sometimes ppl go to the parlor in order to get some fresh ideas; other times they wait before going to the parlor with definite ideas already; I guess the thing to remember is that it's unprofessional for an artist to do a hard sell; the person needs to want to be inked quite definitely; so going just to get ideas is unlikely to be resented by the artist.

If you do decide to get more ink with a witness-effective faith element, do you think you might end up being glad you did it?

I know of some Christian's and those in the public eye have used tattoo's as a witness. Kind of like walking as if a live walking billboard; a blueprint ~ so to speak. I feel it is up to the individual and their conscience whether expressing self in this manner is appropriate or not. There are many of my relatives who have done this. I have not. Recently my daughter just had a tattoo done, I think it was in her case to be done to memorialize the death of her stillborn daughter. For example: a tattoo in the image of a Luna moth, and her name was "Luna." Many of the youth these days seem to embrace tattooing for many personal reasons. Blessings,
RitaKay:

The OP talks about his tattoo being a mental hurt.

Regarding your daughter's, it would seem to be the opposite, I guess. A mental hurt motivated her to get it, rather than it being a source of mental hurt, right?

I have tattoos on my soul. Failure and shame are tattooed there. Don't feel bad, we all bear spiritual tattoos and you are not alone.
Good point; and there is the cleansing by faith in the precious blood that 1 Peter 1 speaks of.

Hi there; not seen you just recently! did you think any more about doing a faith based cover up? (since you are already tattooed).

Blessings.

Hi! Probably not going with a cover up. I don't think tattoos are for me. I just try to cover my arm as it's noticeably faded at this point and looks pretty bad :/
Okay! I guess it's your settled wish for your tattoos to symbolize what you were rather than what you are! :)

Different Christians adopt different approaches.

The tattooist Kat Von D has a lot of tattoos. She helped create a cosmetic line that includes concealers for tattoos.
This is an image of her before and after using the concealer.

Just Google for Kat Von D tattoo concealers. These aren't cheap but if you went to the expense of getting inked, covering those that make you feel bad about yourself should be therapeutic.

Here's a link for charity type places that help with the cost of actually removing the tattoos.

Concerning your fears about your tattoos and their being a sin. They're not.
When you accepted Christ as your savior the Bible tells you that God remembers your sins no more. They're washed clean and are covered by the blood of the final sacrifice for all sins in the world, the lamb Jesus Christ.

God doesn't hold your tattoos against you. If you can't see yourself having them removed consider that they serve as a scripture of sorts, being they are ink on the living temple of the most high God and that serves to remind you that you were indeed reborn from who you were when you got them. To who you are now that you are in Christ.

You're not ugly with those tattoos on your body. And they don't make you ugly, nor are they. Because at one time you thought them worth an eternal place on your skin. You loved them. If you hate them now when they're permanent unless lasered off you are hating yourself. Because every time you see those tattoos you feel less than as that former you who asked for them to be applied. That old you is tricking you into thinking who you are now should feel full of regret for that sin you think those tattoos are. And that is a trick of the one that opposes God's plan for you.
His spirit tries to enter in and make you feel bad about who you were in your life before Christ and therein makes you insecure because of your past now that you are in Christ.
Even the Devil knows God holds your sins against you no more. However, if he can make you feel you're bearing the marks of sin he'll remove your mind from being free in Christ as one washed clean of sins.
So stop that!
Look in the mirror and know that God loves you. And you are spotless in his eyes because he trusts you to be indwelt by his Holy Spirit. And that's because you trusted him so as to invite him in. Find peace. You are currently a tapestry that proves God transforms us from who we were, back when those tats meant something to you, to the loving living testimony of Jesus Christ right now.

Tattoos in some cultures are perceived negatively. For example, Japan considers tattoos in a negative way i.e., the yakuza are known to be heavily tattooed. Some places here forbid people with tattoos from entering some public baths and hot springs since tattoos are considered offensive by some Japanese and may deter other customers.

In my opinion, I would not follow a fad of the moment. It may lead to regret later. Once the fad passes, one is left with scars or consequences which may not be easily corrected. For example, breast enhancement seems like a fad too but causes much scarring and health problems. Another example is piercing of odd places of the body may look cool for now when one is young, but I don't think it is cool when one becomes older. Also, it may lead to infections. Tattoos are the same. They look good for the moment. After awhile, one may want to remove the tattoos, then it is a painful procedure.

I don't know where in the bible it says that tattoos should be forbidden. I don't think it addresses such issues. But, it does say your body is God's temple and do not defile it.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Corinthians 6:19-20
16Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. 1Corinthians3

I have about 10 tats. I have a few religious ones plus i have one of a dragon! If i had my time again i would not have any! But, i do have them. You could look at them as 'your' cross to bear! Offer up how you feel to God as an act of suffering for God.

Tats are not sinful. At least i dont think they are or it also depends on the tat too! Some can be quite evil in nature etc.

I was in the process of having 4 removed but stopped quite some time ago as the lazer pain is unbelievable! I may start it again though!

blessedbethyname101:

You make some interesting observations and comments and I would not necessarily disagree with some of your apparent, main points.

What I would also say is that some Christians see faith based designs (Bible ref., or Christian fish sign <>< on wrist, etc.) as a positive means of God honoring witness.

Also, as regards breast cancer victims (as opposed those who practise enhancements, which you mention), many victims seek to mitigate its effects — often for personal, psychological reasons — by visits to the tattoo parlor. In this sense, many of those who are the most unenthusiastic about tattoos, might regard them in a somewhat more

positive way.

Blessings.

Kat Von D is certainly very creative individual.

Did you ever see any of the TV tattoo art shows featuring her creations?

I have . :) She does very fine work.
I think her parents were missionaries someplace, if I'm not mistaken.

Certainly in the tattoo industry her work and innovations are highly regarded. (Have you ever talked to anyone in a tattoo parlor that has not heard of Kat Von D?) :)

I don't patronize tattoo parlors but I do know she had a TV show at one time. I watched that and saw her art there. And I had been aware of her before when she was part of a cast of artists who were members of a man's tattoo shop. Her show was a spin-off from his.
She also dated a former Motley Crew band member for awhile and I remember that making news because they were both into tattoos so I am well aware of Ms Von D.

I will say I don't know anything about her parents.
