Bass player & singer for 40+ years. Transitioned from secular to blend Christmas of 2012 in a Lutheran outfit, then from blend to cutting-edge contemporary Fall of 2013 in a modern multi-site where I was a bench player on call via Planningcenter. (Timing could be off a month or two either way.) Quit the multi-site 2 months ago. Currently looking for a seriously talented, modern, quality-driven, no-holds-barred praise band. Had a few bites on my CL ad but nothing even close to what I'm looking for. I have a full expectation that something real good is already in place for me; I just have to wait for the manifestation to make it to the physical.

Best to all the other players out there. We're all fishermen, amen?

Anyone else a musician? Play in a band? Record music, anything?
Yeah I play the guitar and sing and do some recording. Well try to anyway. I havnt really played in a band though I have jammed a lot with other musos. I have been doing a lot of recording and trying to learn how to record properly. I am realizing it is also about the quality of your equipment if you want to get the best sound. Well maybe I tell myself that anyway.

Play bass, guitar (acoustic and electric rhythm) and a few other instruments as well.

Got 1 CD out with my wife of original tunes on Itunes ("Rejoice" by David and Sharon Waggoner)

My main instrument is piano/keyboards, but I also play guitar, bass and some percussion. I am the rhythm guitarist in my church's praise team and fill in when needed on bass, keys and drums. I also play keyboards in a band (Elijah's Rain) which is a lot of fun and has allowed me to travel some and meet lots of great people. I feel greatly blessed to have these "outlets" which allow me to make music on a weekly basis.

Yeah I play guitar and write some songs and then try to record them. I am not that good at the moment but would like to learn how to record better as mine sound pretty amateurish. I use vts instruments which sound artificial and would like to get that more authentic sound. I am trying to set up a studio and get better equipment. I would like to do a short course in audio and recording as well. Here is an example of a song I wrote and recorded a few years back.

Well, Steve, I've been doing this for about 35 years. It takes time and money.

The key to recording good, authentic sounding audio is to control your surroundings. Acoustics is everything. The following is a composition of mine done at the Washington National Cathedral after lots of experimentation on microphone placement. Each instrument section was recorded separately, with separate microphone locations for each recoirding so that the resonance in the space did not conflict with other instrument types. Making use of, and controlling, your surrounding acoustics is an art. Mixing is also an art that takes time and practice.

When I first heard your recordings I thought they were using loops or sequences downloaded from online. That is great using real instruments. That is one major difference from mine. I could only dream of using real instruments. I can see what you mean by the acoustics. You can hear the authentic sound of the instrument acoustics in the different locations of the cathedral. I use the guitar as the only real instrument and then build up the rest with vst instruments. My recording software has many instruments. But they never sound real but more electronic. Yet I hear that artist nowadays use these to make hit songs in their bedrooms. I guess if you can get the better software you can get closer to a real sound but it never can substitute the real thing.

As for the mixing I have spent some time and learnt a bit. But still nothing can beat the real thing. The acoustics you can get in your live situation inside a cathedral is great and it cannot substitute an artificial sound of software. I may have 30 odd different chambers, rooms made of different materials even cathedrals to choose from in my software to give the different acoustics of those areas but its not the same. I occasionally play live with some friends and there's nothing better. But for getting all the different instruments to back you up in a song you cant get that real sound with software instruments.

One mistake many beginners make when recording is failing to frequency-slot each instrument. That is, to eq each instrument so it fits into its own frequency range and doesn't overlap (too much) into adjacent ranges occupied by other instruments.

It's also possible to have too many instruments in a mix. Too many instruments guarantees congestion and the masking of each instrument's character. Electronic sims are very good today -- very authentic-sounding. But it's easy to use too many when your DAW provides dozens that are only a mouse click away, and then they'll sound like dog. Same temptation with composer keyboards: I've fallen into the trap even with my sub-$1K Korg Kross. Use only what's necessary to make the song work, and stop there. Leave each instrument space to breathe, in terms of both frequency range (empty spectrum on either side of it) and timing (room to swell and decay).

It's just like writing a story. Finish it, then go back through it and start chopping out any and all parts that aren't absolutely necessary to create the reaction you're trying to get from your audience.

I agree that keeping it simple is important. Sometimes I can go overboard with backup instruments. Sometimes just the acoustic guitar is good enough. It depends on the song and what mood you are trying to relay. But maybe the basics of a beat and that could just mean percussion and the bass is enough. Maybe a nice synth weaving through the song in and out but not much else. When I add to many things and over mix it I can lose the original feeling of the song.
