How did they make it through school?

And how does someone who was born in the US in 1997 not know these things? ^_^

They probably breezed through because they're in sports. Teachers are asked to pass kids who are in sports, even though it's very illegal (I had first hand experience witnessing teachers get asked to do this, and coaches warning kids in athletics of upcoming "random" drug tests).

Oh dear. Who puts sports above academics at the high school level?! Craziness.

Just about every school around where I live does this. Colleges have also been accused of doing this (kid gets in on sports scholarship and the school wants to keep them able to play on the college team).

Funny. Most of them aren't going to play at the college level, so what's the point? What is the school seeking to get out of this?

I don't like this, either, but there's at least a reason behind it. They make money for the college.

Yes, I think so. I've read a few articles over the past year talking about how people are addicted to the 'likes' feature of face book and other social media, so much so that they slump into a mild depression if the likes are not as high as they normally have been, or they don't get as much attention relating to posts and pics. FB has a way of just pulling you in, and now I only log in like maybe ten minutes a day, and I'm out. I don't want to become attached to anything.

Texas, especially football. My school would bend over backwards for our football team, and our coach (baseball) had to ask teacher several times sometimes for our grade reports. The way we were treated in comparison to the football and basketball teams was not right.

I'm not sure how many people I would consider to be addicted, but I do find it sort of fascinating that you can go into a mall or out on the street nowadays, and probably find that 25-50% of the people you see are on their cell phones in some fashion. Its just strange how quickly it took hold, lol... I mean as few as 5 years ago you wouldn't have seen that.

I also find it odd that almost everyone views a smartphone as a requirement now. I've still got a flip phone, and get comments on it just about every time that I pull it out. Really strange comments sometimes, like people looking at me like I'm from a different planet or something, haha.

I have a smartphone for work, and I use the GPS, camera, and email on it and that's about it.

I type so fast on my laptops I get comments on that sometimes. That can't be achieved with ANY smartphones unless perhaps You dictate the text into it (I don't know, do they have speech recognition in some models yet?). People such at seminary will most likely also be amazed in the future at the theological and language questions I can answer with my laptop. I'm already fully ready for all the questions for years to come. At seminary there's no-one who thinks a smartphone can give much answers, nor that an ordinary tablet can. When researching You have to type a lot.
Also, as I want to date girls, I have to type a lot. Using a chat system could be done by voice, one girl has wanted to practice the language (that's the reason she said and she does need to), I'll see if I have time to, the problem is not that I wouldn't have some laptop with me but that usually read either a print book or write something on the laptop all day every day, or at the desktop computers.
