Not too shabby this year. 4 teams in the top 15 and 6 teams in the top 25.

7. Oregon
8. USC
13. UCLA
15. Arizona State

21. Stanford
22. Arizona

I'll go out on a limb and predict a Oregon and Alabama national championship game come 2016. Let's see how I do.

The Top 25 is just a prediction and nothing else, USC is expected to do very well this year and remarkably better than last year due to the fact they aren't lacking in depth and plenty experience carrying over from last year into this year.

As far as how accurate these preseason predictions are, it is just a prediction, that have been assessed on the basis of many factors, the teams are at the starting line and the starter pistol hasn't been fired for the race to begin. As the season progresses, teams rise or fall or rise again or fall again.

Ohio St for instance, could plummet into oblivion.

Speaking on behalf of the Pac-12,

Oregon has 12 starters returning this season, 6 on offense, 6 on defense. But the big question mark is the Marcus Mariota factor, how much of impact will this have on Oregon? There are two QBs to fill in his shoes, Jeff Lockie and newly acquired senior starter transfer Vernon Adams from Eastern Washington.

UCLA has 18 starters returing this season (the most in the Pac-12), and have to fill the void left by QB Brett Hundley, they have Jerry Neuheisel and freshman prospect Josh Rosen who is one of the top high school prospects in the nation to battle for the starting job.

USC is commonly considered the most talented football team in the Pac-12 in the preseason, Cody Kessler is amongst heavy favorites for the Heisman this year who had a phenomenal season last year:

2014 Single Season Records:
3,826 yards passing - 2nd in team history
Pass TDs 39 - 1st in team history
Comp. Pct. 69.7 - 1st in team history (and 5 interceptions)
Int. Rate 1.1 - 1st in team history

Pac-12 South and SEC West are considered the two toughest divisions in all of college football.

Arizona (last year's South champion), Stanford, and Arizona St are sure to be in the running.

Yes, it is a prediction, but it is also a prediction based on limited knowledge on how so many variables will play out.

Ever see the experts making predictions before the season starts in professional sports? They miss those by a mile many times and they are mostly dealing with players on teams they have track records on. In college football, they are predicting teams performance based on many new players coming into the fold and getting playing time, which they did not have before.

It is the equivalent of throwing darts at a board.

Fortunately, more or less, it begins to sort itself out as the season progresses as teams are measured by their records, opponent difficulty, offensive profiency, defensive profiency, etc.

Exactly, which is why a preseason poll before anyone has played a game and new starters are tested, is useless. As an example, my college was not in the top 25 last year to start the year and they were ranked number 1 by week 6.

I pay attention to the polls about 5-6 games in, just as I don't pay attention to baseball standings, until June.

True. But I follow the polls from start to finish because it is liking watching a race for the national championship.

Well, it is analytical starting point that isn't going to necessarily predict the season's outcome.

Stanford played lousy today against host Northwestern, the former had only won 5 games each of the last two seasons.

Stanford appeared lackluster and not hungry at all.

QB Kevin Hogan final stats were 20/35 155 yards 1 Int.

Stanford no doubt dropped out of the Top 25 with this loss against unranked NW.

But UCLA was another whole other story, freshmen Josh Rosen had a phenomenal debut today in dismantling unranked Virginia, 34-16.

QB Josh Rosen final stats were 28/35 (80% comp) 355 yards 3 TDs.

RB Saso Jamabo had 9 carries for 79 yards for an average 8.8 yards a carry.

UCLA has an impressive backfield in Rosen, Jamabo, and Perkins.

WATCH OUT USC!

WATCH OUT OREGON!

UCLA could be a serious contender for the PAC 12 title. And UCLA doesn't play Oregon this year but USC does.

weekend stats

USC 59 Idaho 09
Cody Kessler 26 COMP. 31 ATT. 83.9% COMP% 410 YARDS 3 TD 0 INT.

JuJu Smith-Schuster 10 REC. 192 YARDS 19.2 AVG. 2 TD

UCLA 37 UNLV 03

Josh Rosen 22 COMP. 42 ATT. 52.4% COMP% 223 YARDS 1 TD 1 INT.

Paul Perkins 18 CAR. 151 YARDS 8.4 AVG. 2 TD 0 FUM.

I think when USC and UCLA meet in the final game of the season on Nov. 28, it is going to be a war. Kessler vs Rosen!
