Ah, at least this prediciton has a more forgiving timeline then the one that Joseph Fielding Smith had back in 1961:

We will never get a man into space. This earth is man's sphere and it was never intended that he should get away from it. The moon is a superior planet to the earth and it was never intended that man should go there. You can write it down in your books that this will never happen.

Wouldn't it make sense to maybe practice this on the moon first where, presumably, the settlers could be picked up in fairly short order if things began to go south and could be periodically swapped out? Or, heck, Antarctica for that matter. Can we even manage a self-sustaining colony in Antarctica where atmosphere and radiation aren't problems?

I find it very hard to believe that we will be technologically prepared to fly to and colonize Mars in less than a decade.

I'm lost. Is God against interplanetary travel?

Mars One really, really angers me.

It angers me because the people in charge of Mars One have been lying to the public about what the they will actually be able to achieve. They've done nothing but set back the dates for the launches and tests, have demonstrated no technical advancements, and claim they will use modified versions of SpaceX Dragon Capsules for supplies and crew with Falcon Heavies for the launch vehicle but have not actually gotten an agreement or contract from SpaceX about this. They want to go straight from an unmanned supply mission to Mars to a full-blown crewed landing in the course of a year without having shown they have the capability to even get a launch vehicle. They don't have any concrete plans on how to keep the crew alive and functioning over the transit nor once they get to the surface.

It angers me because they've chosen the finalists not after rigorous examination of the candidate's physical and mental strength, but by how much money they donated to Mars One. You want the absolute, definitive best of the best. Even during the Apollo 13 incident, the astronauts aboard had near-instantaneous communication with their CAPCOM except for the brief period of time when they were behind the Moon. On a Mars trip, the Two Way Light Time between Earth and the ship would grow from a few seconds, to a few minutes, to almost half an hour. You would have around 12 minutes until Earth received a message about a potential problem, and then at least 12 minutes till you received the message on what to do. You need astronauts that are not only ready to die in space (since if they stay on Mars forever, they will obviously die there) but also ones who will be able to know the ship inside and out, know exactly how to deal with any time-critical problem and do it without any help besides the other people on board.

It angers me because originally one of the things they planed on doing to keep getting money to run the mission, was to base the whole thing on a reality TV show of the astronauts lives aboard the ship. A show which people in charge of the Mars One program admitted they would have no recourse for if the astronauts decided to turn off the TV cameras. They even talked with the producers of the Big Brother series to figure out how to do this. That planned dropped through, and now they plan on documentary style highlight reels to fund the mission.

When this inevitably fails, when either nothing comes to light and no launches happen or, even worse, when someone dies on the trip to. The three past major spaceflight incidents I can recall (Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia) almost stalled out the whole spaceflight program from the public backlash. And that was for a public agency that has at least some (though very small) guaranteed funding. You need billions, not millions to do successful spaceflights, and even more to actually land someone on the moon. And even more than that to get someone out of the Earth/Moon system!

The worse thing Mars One can do is not just result in the deaths of astronauts, but also end up making the public lash out against space travel once again.

Crying wolf for almost two millennia without so much as a paw print to show for it makes me, to put in mildly, a bit skeptical.

Matthew 24:40-44. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I know when Jesus is coming back, because I don't know. I was just saying that I think it will be soon. It could be 5 minutes from now, tomorrow, in 5 years, or it could happen in 100 years. No one knows when Christ is returning. Only God does. I am simply trying to point you to the Truth before it is too late. God loves you and He sent His Son to the cross to die for you and your sin. He took your punishment so that you don't have to. You have the opportunity to spend eternity in paradise with the Almighty Creator. There is still time to repent and place your faith in Christ, if you wish to do so. God loves you brotha.
