Across what is said to be 'the most peaceful border in the world', the Niagara Falls are a shared natural heritage, popular since the middle of the 19th century with the burgeoning tourist industry.

Among the best views of the American Falls are those from the Canadian side; most the of the Horseshoe Falls are in Canada, too; but it's hard not to think of the Falls as whole as one amazing natural phenomenon.

I'll look for some photos sometime; not that they are not already so well known.

In 1969, the American Falls were experimentally de-watered, and photos from the period show rather unusual views!

The American Falls are geographically approaching the status of rapids, given the large amount of boulders that have periodically detached themselves from the brow of the Falls.

I've been there at night.. It's beautiful!

In order to experience the illuminations at Niagara, you really need to be staying in the district, rather than rely on a bus tour from NYC, Buffalo or Toronto.

My wife and I saw the illuminations when we stayed on the American side for a few days.

niagra falls is so beautiful at night

Ms. whitebeaches:

I agree. My wife and I went to the illuminations at Niagara in mid-winter, and the cold was formidable.

It was all well worth seeing, still, in any case.

I attended a women's conference at the convention center at Niagara Falls..US side in early November of 1980. Another woman friend and I ran along the path overlooking the falls. It was a crisp, frosty, day with autumns colors abounding. Great memory of a wonderful experience along a beautiful path with a breath taking view. The conference was good too.

I'm sure it was memorable.

Re. conferences, I think it was at Niagara Falls that C I Scofield led prophetic Bible study conferences a century or so ago.

(Now there are some events that I would have loved to attend... :)

Blessings.

revisit soon. Any idea who from Europe first recorded the falls?

I probably don't appreciate the Falls all that much anymore since I was raised in the region and saw them all the time. It just became an annoying tourist trap. Plus once you leave the touristy areas of Niagara Falls, the city is actually quite rundown and a dump...and tbh I really hate what the city has become (a mini Vegas).

If anyone does want to visit however go in Winter (February). It will be bitterly cold, the roads and sidewalks will most likely be covered in snow and ice, but Niagara Falls has always been the most beautiful with snow. Plus most hotels and attractions (that are still open) offer 'off-season' rates and there are hardly any tourists.

These are from the 90's when we had proper winters.
