Day one- July 29, 2015- Having decided to try Windows 10 as soon as I could; I waited with anticipation for the 29th to come around; but the day went by with nothing from Microsoft. Altho I had a good experience with Win7 for over 3 years; a video glitch the last couple of months that would not go away with new driver updates and slow text insertion on CF caused me to decide to give 10 a try; plus trying something new sounded inviting. So after a short search I found an UK site that showed how to download 10 immediately.

So I started d/ling at 5:20 and expected it to take an hour or so to bring in the 6GB that MS said I needed in my HD to hold 10, at the 12MB/sec of my isp; but after it was all in my HD went up by 20GB; talk about software bloat! I remember Win95 needing 60MB of space and people carping about bloat then; lol. One of the things I noticed as it was d/ling, was that it had two times of updates, coming in, you would think something as new as 10 wouldn't have that many updates. It took three hours to finally get it installed with the computer shutting off 5-6 times and one time for so long, over 5 minutes, I thought it had hung-up; but it finally started up.

Windows 10 has a lot of stuff going on, from new start page to new look in the file system; and even the clock is digital now instead of the analog one with hands as before, I liked the old style clock, but oh well, One thing I like is the layout of the files in the computer itself is simpler; before you had so many ways of looking at the files in your computer; it could be confusing. Cortana may take some getting used to; I haven't used voice actuation before and Cortana couldn't understand what I said at first; guess I need to speak up. When I finally got it to do something by speaking; that was neat, I can remember trying that with my first Aptiva in '95 and could never get it to work.

I like the new start button; where you have your local weather, email and mobile phone, calendar and new sites all in one place. I don't like having to type in my outlook password every time I wake my laptop up; but I imagine there is a work-around for that.

So I got online and started up Edge; which I'm not as happy right off as I am for 10; for one thing the favorites are not as easy to use. I tried to import the ones from IE but it said it couldn't do that; but then latter they showed up, but they were older ones I had a couple of months ago. You can run a page or site in IE so that helps; but it still had the old favorites and not my latest ones; hope I haven't lost them. The tools are not as numerous as in IE and are set up differently; maybe it will grow on my over time. The new tabs is different too, has a search built right in; but the search engine is one from one of my email programs, Inbox.com, I expected it to be Bing; as I heard it was going to be integrated into Win10; how it came to hook-up with Inbox; I don't know.

Well that's the first 24 hrs with win10 and edge; anybody else got any experience to share?

I havent' tried it yet but I plan to. My friends on facebook said it takes awhile to do the fresh load/launch. I'm a little hesitant to try right away because of bugs so may hold off a little plus. Also I just got a fresh install on windows done a few weeks back

Did two laptop installs yesterday, went smoothly.
Used MS's USB Tool to create the Install system, speeds up the install (unless you want to burn the ISO, always a good option also)

Going to try the Internal Update tool next to see how that goes, though it's on a dual boot system, so that might give me some problems (I'll find out in a bit I guess)

Well that didn't go as good as I hoped.
Lost my network connection (not good)
Device manager was able to see the Network connection, showed no errors. but it just wouldn't show up in the available network devices.
Got my Key though, so off to grab a new HD & try a clean install next.

other issues, lost GRUB2 when upgrading to 10, upon rollback though it did restore it so back to dual boot without issues for now.

Day two: Cortana sets on the bottom of the page even though I have the "hide the task bar" box checked; it gets in the way of picture sites that have their arrows on the bottom of the screen (like Hemming's and Photobucket, etc.) so I have to pop it to the side when looking at images. Still haven't figured out how to wake-up my laptop without logging into Outlook; you know sometimes I want to go to other email programs or sites, MS. I think Cortana is going to be one of those things you can do without, just fine. We seem to have went backward in the look of Edge; the graphics are stickman type; no color and everything just line drawn; IE looked better in my opinion; small potatoes I suppose. One of the things I miss is being able to highlight a word and having Bing translate a word or phrase; in fact I just noticed, when you highlight a word the options, like copy is not coming up with a right click, surely they wouldn't take that away; going to go try it in other places.

p.s. the copy feature is still there; it just doesn't work in this posting box; but Bing translate is gone plus other things I have forgotten about.

Features such as translate and add-ons are coming. And Edge's vaunted speed will go when they do.

Having a convo at sevenforums regarding 10, and there's a widespread consensus that MS is offering the bait, but already with plenty of signs of strings being attached. I'm on two Win10 mailing lists (Windows 10 phone and Windows 10 Insider), and MS has no way to get off them. The links go nowhere. It's their new Hotel California subscription strategy. As I familiarize myself with my new LinuxLite install, I'm very happy to have made the switch. It's called freedom.

Ok, 3rd system Up & Running windows.

Clean Install didn't work, Windows wouldn't activate with my KEY I got from the Upgrade.
To get as clean install as I could, Did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (BIOS Key so no key needed)
After installing had to update the network drivers, then was able to do a Upgrade to Windows 10 with it's Full wipe install.

Network working. Dual Monitor working (with rotated display)
Synergy installed.
Got a lot of other software to install over the weekend (Office / Visual Studio / Adobe Photoshop / Steam / Battlenet & more :) )
The joys of a Full clean install. Though the system should be stable.

And I've still got my old Drive to fall back on.

What peripherals?
I've read that if you have older peripherals like a printer, scanner, external DVD player, etc. that there might not be the necessary drivers to make the transition. So you end up having to buy all that stuff over again. I have Win 7 and everything is working together just fine. From what I'm understanding Win 7's updates won't be discontinued until 2020. Lord willing by that time I'd probably be in the market for all new everything (computer, printer, etc.). Also by then whatever “bugs” Win 10 has, a majority will probably be worked out. So it just seems better for me to wait...

Found out why I didn't have any networking after the Upgrade
Cisco VPN Client has issues (major) in 10

So no 10 for my work system for now.
Tried the workarounds to get it installed, and it's installed, but I can't connect Error 433 every time I try to connect to the VPN (not good)

So next is try to make it try boot system (Win 8.1 / 10 / UBUNTU) should be fun, at least they're all on their own HD's

With the password problems of Cisco VPN are you not going to the newer AnyConnect Client?
No option, have to use what the job requires. They Require Cisco VPN Client, not the AnyConnect Client. (Pain but they pay the bills)

I have been using IE11 again; I think that is one of MS best ideas, having IE available to be used so easily; and it is nice to be able to right click on a page and add it to your favorites; sometimes it's the little things that count. And I don't see how Edge is that so much faster then IE; IE is better looking and has more features. The video problem seems to have fixed it self; as videos are playing in Edge again. Tried a few fixes of the problem of the task bar not auto hiding; it seemed to be fixed for a while but now is parked on the bottom of my page again.

I'm liking the fact that Win 10 is not Win 8.1. So far, a very smooth install on HRH's laptop. But I won't be putting it on my laptop - I still need to use Win 7 due to some old software I still use (an old printer and scanner for school).

I haven't tried the printer on Win 10 but given what others have said here, this should be fun (not! :) )

I'm debating if I want to install 10 on my secondary/entertainment laptop which has Linux Mint KDE. I have a back up of Win7 I can restore and the get the free upgrade...but I know I won't be sticking with 10 so it seems like a waste of time.

As for Edge...Until it becomes cross platform it's just another IE (waste of space) as I'll switch between Chrome/Firefox. Even though I don't care for Google much anymore, Chrome syncs beautifully between my MacBook, Linux laptop and phone.
