yeah a lot of people think he's an ass. So what's with sudden popularity?

perhaps the novelty of a politician who could actually believe in himself enough to support his own campaign
i.e. putting his money where his mouth is would be a rather drastic change from the usual bland campaign speeches.

That's exactly what he is. A lot of Americans are disaffected and depressed, that's part of living in the most advanced culture on the planet. We have everything we want, but we're still not happy. Along comes a bitter jerk with even more than we've got and we think he's our champion, but in reality he's just saying outrageous things to manipulate us into serving him. He's no dummy. His familiarity comes primarily from his reality television program, and it is the tasteless, reality TV-watching segment of our population that is fawning over him.

I want a senior executive with some (but not too much) political experience who treats others with respect and carries him or herself with dignity. That's not Trump.

Are you looking back to George Washington, or perhaps John Quincy Adams, or maybe Reagan?

Trump became popular by being how he is. So how can anyone hurt his popularity by calling him that when that's how he got popular in the first place? Democrats have Joe Biden, and Republicans have Donald Trump.

I'm not saying he's gonna win the election or anything, that's a long way off. But hey, he calls McCain a war wimp, states a very unpopular opinion about amnesty {well unpopular with the media and turncoat Republicans and Republican consultants} and I even heard he told a lawyer in a deposition that he refused to take a break so she could use a breast pump, but when she wanted to do it in the deposition he told her she was disgustoid. So what's up? Why is is popularity skyrocketing, even if it is temporary?
People think our country is in really bad shape now and are receptive to someone who looks likely to stand by his stated positions and will take on the tough issues of jobs and illegal immigration. If you've noticed, almost all the other candidates have either a bad record on one of those or has skirted the issues altogether.

I am not sure this can be applied to every voter.

The vast majority, I think. There are people suffering who need government help, but most of the miserable are having their needs met as well as most legitimate material wants. Obviously I'm not talking about people struggling with personal relationships or health issues, those are rather outside of the scope of politics.

As with the election of any president, it would not come with a guarantee. What I was saying is that the national mood seems different from the recent past in that the people are ready for a take-charge person and are thinking they've had enough of politics as usual.

agreed.
what's fascinating about all of this is how The Donald has used the media to perfection in the run-up to the first debate.
Every day this week there has been a new 'breaking news' story about what he's doing or saying.

So far he is the front runner that all the other candidates are chasing.
It's his game to win, and he's got a good strategy going for him.
