Can you give me examples of popular but unscriptural Christian cliches? I shall start the ball rolling with this :

"Slain by the Holy Spirit"

I just cannot find the word "slain" in the New Testament.

The verb to slay means to kill. Only Ananias and Sapphira are recorded in the Second Testament as having been 'slain in the Spirit' (Acts.5).

Here's another oxymoron for you...Jesus being both fully God and fully man?!
(Before you denounce me as a heretic I should advise you that I am a passionate believer both in the Tri-Personal Nature of YHWH and the Incarnation (see my signature).)

Trinity. The word is not in the Bible. Like many of the things I've seen in this thread though the word or phrase is not there the concept may be.

The reality of the One God simultaneously Existing as Tri-Personal is certainly revealed within the Scriptures but the term Trinity is a later theological construct created to more easily convey the reality that has been revealed.

Snorting cocaine is not a sin but breaking the law instituted by God appointed is.

Yes, snorting cocaine is a sin. The principle is that apart from being asleep or under anaesthesia for medical reasons one is never to put oneself in a position where one is not in complete control of all of one's faculties since this would leave one vulnerable to spiritual attack and compromise. It is for this reason that Paul says 'Do not get drunk on [alcohol] which leads to debauchery but rather be filled with the Spirit (Eph.5:18).

i dont know if this counts, its more of a misquote but "money is the root of all evil"

when the bible says that "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil"

big difference there. but i hear it quoted out of context all the time.

What the NIV actually says is 'The LOVE of money is A root of all KINDS of evil.' (1Tim.6:10).

Unlike 'Jesus being both fully God and fully man' which is definitely both unscriptural and anti-Scriptural, 'In the midst of life we are in death' is unscriptural but not anti-Scriptural but, as a fantastic piece of Christian heritage, from where does it come?

Rapture ...

The term 'rapture' is unbiblical but the sentiment isn't. The Biblical term is the 'Blesséd hope'.

The term 'rapture' is used because the verb 'to enrapture' means 'to catch up' in the sense of being so totally and emotionally engrossed in something to such an extent that one is utterly oblivious of anything else that is going on around one. The Bible speaks of the believers being 'caught up' to meet the Messiah in the air (1Thess.4:17) and it is for this reason that the term 'rapture' is used. One is said to be enraptured with something of exquisite beauty, a piece of artwork, an artistic performance, a piece of music or a panoramic view. One's emotions become enraptured with the experience and often one then engages in 'rapturous applause' in appreciation of the experience It is in this sense that the Blesséd Hope is referred to as 'the Rapture'.

What really irritates me is when someone takes it a step further and in complete buffoonish ignorance changes the words of a traditional and, to many people, sacred hymn such as the third verse of Fanny Jan Crosby's tremendous hymn To God be the glory...

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher and greater will be,
Our wonder, our transport [i.e. rapture], when Jesus we see?!

Evidently, the word 'transport' (unlike 'rapture') has absolutely nothing to do with emotional content and is totally inappropriate in this context.

Even aside from that, the Bible commands us to obey the laws of our leaders, as long as those laws are not against proclaiming Christ or living righteously. Simply by the fact that cocaine is illegal would make it a sin to use.

What the NIV actually says is 'The LOVE of money is A root of all KINDS of evil.' (1Tim.6:10).

Simonline.

The original: "The love of money is the root of all evil" is the English translation of the original Greek. Or actually it is: "The root of all evil is the love of silver," if you want to get explicitly literal. The important thing to understand is that Greek is not English, and Greeks do not think like the English. In the Greek philosophy of communication, "all" does not mean the same thing that it does in the English philosophy of communication.

When an English speaker says "all," we mean that there are no exclusions of any sort. If we say "the love of money is the root of all evil." we mean that ALL evil is rooted in the love of money with no exceptions. When a Greek speaker says the same thing, he does not necessarily mean that ALL evil is from that root. He frequently is trying to say "all kinds" rather than "all" as an English speaker would understand it. Consider, many sins are not rooted in the love of money (adultery, fornication, lying, idolatry, drunkenness, etc).

The Hebrew Old Testament also has the same issue in many places.

That is also true.

Therefore (at least in this case), the NIV is the more accurate translation from the Greek into English?

Define free will in it's fullest capacity.

hismessenger

The ability of a moral agent to take action according to his own moral judgment without coercion or consequences imposed by any other moral agent.

The concept of free will is denied by scripture:

...you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. -- Romans 6

There is no free will. There is the single choice--and that only by the grace of God--to be a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. Being able only to "choose today who you will serve" is nobody's definition of "free will."

"God will never present you with anything that's too big for you to handle."

The new understanding is that God will frequently allow Satan to present us with more than we can handle so that we will depend upon Him.
