Proverbs 27
Everyone read Chapter 27 if it is the 27th day of the month today. Come back and give us your thoughts....Tishri1
Proverbs 27New International Version (NIV)

27 Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.

2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth;
an outsider, and not your own lips.

3 Stone is heavy and sand a burden,
but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.

4 Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?

5 Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.

6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses.

7 One who is full loathes honey from the comb,
but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.

8 Like a bird that flees its nest
is anyone who flees from home.

9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the pleasantness of a friend
springs from their heartfelt advice.

10 Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family,
and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you—
better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.

11 Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;
then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.

12 The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.

13 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.

14 If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning,
it will be taken as a curse.

15 A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping
of a leaky roof in a rainstorm;
16 restraining her is like restraining the wind
or grasping oil with the hand.

17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.

18 The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and whoever protects their master will be honored.

19 As water reflects the face,
so one’s life reflects the heart.[a]

20 Death and Destruction[b] are never satisfied,
and neither are human eyes.

21 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but people are tested by their praise.

22 Though you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding them like grain with a pestle,
you will not remove their folly from them.

23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give careful attention to your herds;
24 for riches do not endure forever,
and a crown is not secure for all generations.
25 When the hay is removed and new growth appears
and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26 the lambs will provide you with clothing,
and the goats with the price of a field.
27 You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family
and to nourish your female servants.

Footnotes:
  1. Proverbs 27:19 Or so others reflect your heart back to you
  2. Proverbs 27:20 Hebrew Abaddon

I see this quoted often:
17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.

Mathew Henry wrote this about it:

Pro 27:17

This intimates both the pleasure and the advantage of conversation. One man is nobody; nor will poring upon a book in a corner accomplish a man as the reading and studying of men will. Wise and profitable discourse sharpens men's wits; and those that have ever so much knowledge may by conference have something added to them. It sharpens men's looks, and, by cheering the spirits, puts a briskness and liveliness into the countenance, and gives a man such an air as shows he is pleased himself and makes him pleasing to those about him. Good men's graces are sharpened by converse with those that are good, and bad men's lusts and passions are sharpened by converse with those that are bad, as iron is sharpened by its like, especially by the file. Men are filed, made smooth, and bright, and fit for business (who were rough, and dull, and inactive), by conversation. This is designed, 1. To recommend to us this expedient for sharpening ourselves, but with a caution to take heed whom we choose to converse with, because the influence upon us is so great either for the better or for the worse. 2. To direct us what we must have in our eye in conversation, namely to improve both others and ourselves, not to pass away time or banter one another, but to provoke one another to love and to good works and so to make one another wiser and better.

"Good men's graces are sharpened by converse with those that are good, and bad men's lusts and passions are sharpened by converse with those that are bad, as iron is sharpened by its like, especially by the file."

So it is wise to converse, even online at sites like this, with those that are good. Being with the lustful and sinful will influence us to do what is bad.

Today a few Verses stood out to me....
9 Perfume and incense make the heart glad, [also] friendship sweet with advice from the heart.
I relate to this as I spent a week with a dear friend and it is true her support was just like perfume in my life.

15 A leak that keeps dripping on a rainy day and the nagging of a wife are the same -
16 whoever can restrain her can restrain the wind or keep perfume on his hand from making itself known.
Our pastor was discussing this and said dont worry ladies he was writing this for his sons, had he had daughters then the guys would have been called out.

19 Just as water reflects the face, so one human heart reflects another.
Another really wonderful verse for me today

21 The crucible [tests] silver, and the furnace [tests] gold, but a person [is tested] by [his reaction to] praise.
This is true!

I had to make a difficult decision regarding a non-Christian friend. We would talk for a long time, but as I was getting to know God again, I haven't been wanting to talk to my non-Christian friend, at least for long periods of time. My perception of things have changed while his stays the same and his narcissism can hurt. Sometimes I even feel trapped and bad that I don't want to talk to him sometimes.

This site really helps since I don't have any Christian friends in my area.

 Oh my goodness you can totally make friends here! I was in the same place as you once too. I had to drop a boyfriend, and my best friend (who later got saved thank the Lord!) and find a whole new group of friends. I found most of my new friends through joining a small group at Church. For years I just felt better giving and receiving through my Christian friends and sharing my life with them so dont feel like that's anything but good for you now. It IS good for you!

I may have to find a group somewhere around where I live that's my age. My church is too young or too old and I'm smack in the middle. Thanks for the idea

If you have been here a while you might like staff. We have volunteers who work together and fellowship together to help run this sight behind the scenes and its a great team. If your newer, I would recommend the Ambassador team which is a great group of members who help other members and staff all over CF. They mostly help new members fit in and find their way around and they help staff in busier forums. And we have CF Angels who are our Prayer Warriors and have a group who pray together and for the members.

All three are great and you will see alot of folks are on all three teams.

Here are the links:

Here is the info for you about staff though....

Pro 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. 9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. 17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. 21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

Hi,

Profound. Proverbs 27:17-19, but there is other wonderful stuff there also, in other verses too.

Proverbs 27

17 Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.
18 Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and he who guards his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
so the heart of man reflects the man.

Questions to me from Proverbs 27

17. It is in communing with each other, that all of us become more accurate?

18 If I guard The Master, God, I will be honored?

19 My reactions to things, tell everyone what my heart condition is?

LOVE,

In reading Proverbs 27, verse 14 stood out for me:

"He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him."

This indicates someone not meaning to bless his friend in his heart, but does something that they know is distressing, yet calling it a blessing. It's a "taunting" of sorts....

THIS is NOT a "friend".

9 Friendly suggestions are as pleasant as perfume. This has been so true in my life...

10 Never abandon a friend—either yours or your father’s. Then you won’t need to go to a distant relative for help in your time of need. I have friend, my own and also friends of my parents .....so true,

11 My son, how happy I will be if you turn out to be sensible! It will be a public honor to me. My son, who died recently, has been such a blessing and an honour, a public honour, as people have told me how much he meant to them.

In reading Proverbs 27, verse 11 stood out for me:

"My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me."

This reminds me of the book of Job when Satan was attempting to reproach God about Job. He was, in essence, saying that God is not "worthy" of nor "deserving" of Job's love, and that the only reason Jon "honored" God is because of how God protected and blessed Job.

Reminds me also that Satan is the "accuser" of the brethren, and even as we speak, Satan is attempting to "reproach" God about "us".

We are reminded here to always be cognizant of making our heavenly Father's heart "glad" and not to do those things that give Satan ammunition to "reproach" God because of us.
