I have read the whole bible from front to back and then some more. I now know that it is a relationship with Jesus Christ that I need. However, I'm kind of tired of reading his biography. I want to know him more deeply than that. I want to be able to be spontaneous with him as with any other relationships. Friends, Children, Spouses. They all rely on action and faith. I don't read their biography to get to know them. Sure I can know them a little better but I will never truly know them unless I go up and talk to them. How do I do this with God? Do I just need to start stepping out more in faith by trusting in him? I pray everyday but I feel like it's one sided because I'm doing all the talking.

The early Christians didn't have Bibles. They baptized each other with buckets and spoons and gathered in homes- a church isn't needed either.

However, there does need to be someone with spiritual knowledge for edification. Early teachers went from corner to corner, home to home, and did just that.

Well the only things we can know about God are the things he reveals to us. Scripture is one of those revelations, and is one of those things that can speak to you in many different ways even if you've read it before, you can read it a second time and get a new understanding from it.

But I agree with the poster that said live it, for it will become clearer, when you lead a life filled with love and compassion you will understand scripture all the better and why Jesus said the things he did.

Yes, but once one knows God why would one not want to read about Him and his relationship to his people? Additionally if you want to have a closer relationship to God the best way is to pursue a clloser relationship with everyone else that has a relationship with God.Here's an example of why the Bible can be helpful in your endeavor. Matt 25:40 "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' . So besides being a biography the Bible gives you a road map on how to have a closer relationship to God.

the bible is a medium and a tool that God uses and it is a very good one. but souls in the kingdom of heaven wrote the things in the bible. I want to know God more too and I think the creaturely part of ourselves will always get more and more. I think that is why a reality such as this exist. sometimes I try to die to myself in a certain kind of prayer hoping that God might touch me. it is an ancient Christian practice - to lift ones soul up to God in simplicity. a simple reaching with your whole self, as much as you can to God. an opening of the heart lain bare open to God. in what way shall you find God? God knows and he will show you since you desire him. there are all kinds of ways. the saints said to keep your soul towards God even in the normality of your fleshly workings, if you can. perhaps searching out those who have been close to God can help, they have helped many, thanks to God helping us all.

John 1:1-5 (YLT)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God; this one was in the beginning with God; all things through him did happen, and without him happened not even one thing that hath happened. In him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light in the darkness did shine, and the darkness did not perceive it.

John 10:8-10 (YLT)
all, as many as came before me, are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them; I am the door, through me if any one may come in, he shall be saved, and he shall come in, and go out, and find pasture. `The thief doth not come, except that he may steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

John 17:13-18 (YLT)
`And now unto Thee I come, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves; I have given to them Thy word, and the world did hate them, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world; I do not ask that Thou mayest take them out of the world, but that Thou mayest keep them out of the evil. `Of the world they are not, as I of the world am not; sanctify them in Thy truth, Thy word is truth; as Thou didst send me to the world, I also did send them to the world;

Eph 4:1-10 (YLT)
Call upon you, then, do I--the prisoner of the Lord--to walk worthily of the calling with which ye were called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love, being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of the peace; one body and one Spirit, according as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in you all, and to each one of you was given the grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ, wherefore, he saith, `Having gone up on high he led captive captivity, and gave gifts to men,' -- and that, he went up, what is it except that he also went down first to the lower parts of the earth? he who went down is the same also who went up far above all the heavens, that He may fill all things--

Col 1:15-20 (YLT)
who is the image of the invisible God, first-born of all creation, because in him were the all things created, those in the heavens, and those upon the earth, those visible, and those invisible, whether thrones, whether lordships, whether principalities, whether authorities; all things through him, and for him, have been created, and himself is before all, and the all things in him have consisted. And himself is the head of the body--the assembly--who is a beginning, a first-born out of the dead, that he might become in all things --himself--first, because in him it did please all the fulness to tabernacle, and through him to reconcile the all things to himself--having made peace through the blood of his cross--through him, whether the things upon the earth, whether the things in the heavens.

Rom 11:33-36 (YLT)
O depth of riches, and wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable His judgments, and untraceable His ways! for who did know the mind of the Lord? or who did become His counsellor? or who did first give to Him, and it shall be given back to him again? because of Him, and through Him, and to Him are the all things; to Him is the glory--to the ages. Amen.

1Cor 3:16-23 (YLT)
have ye not known that ye are a sanctuary of God, and the Spirit of God doth dwell in you? if any one the sanctuary of God doth waste, him shall God waste; for the sanctuary of God is holy, the which ye are. Let no one deceive himself; if any one doth seem to be wise among you in this age--let him become a fool, that he may become wise, for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it hath been written, `Who is taking the wise in their craftiness;' and again, `The Lord doth know the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.' So then, let no one glory in men, for all things are yours, whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things about to be--all are yours, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

Col 1:24-29 (YLT)
I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and do fill up the things lacking of the tribulations of the Christ in my flesh for his body, which is the assembly, of which I--I did become a ministrant according to the dispensation of God, that was given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God, the secret that hath been hid from the ages and from the generations, but now was manifested to his saints, to whom God did will to make known what is the riches of the glory of this secret among the nations--which is Christ in you, the hope of the glory, whom we proclaim, warning every man, and teaching every man, in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus, for which also I labour, striving according to his working that is working in me in power.

Christian's need church. Not a building or a event but a community of believers to edify and strengthen each other in Christ. The bible can and should be a vibrant part of the Church provided it's available it however is only a tool and we should not rely upon our spiritual substance from only it. Use all the tools available to you, like the bible but also prayer, fellowship, books, leaders, obedience, teaching/preaching, communion, obedience, the Holy Spirit and many many more to build your relationship with Jesus.

Dear nb408. You had some good replies, may I give one more? In Matthew 22: 35-40: Jesus tells us; " the first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it:
love thy neighbour as thyself." On these two Commandments hang all the Law and all the Prophets. (verse 40)
To Love God and act accordingly, is to prove your love to God. In Luke 10: 25-28: Jesus is asked: " Master what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered: " you know the two great Commandments, on which hang all the Law and the Prophets? DO THIS AND YOU SHALL LIVE." Jesus points us to them, and we follow His advice.
In Matthew 7: 7-10: we read: " ask and you shall receive," we ask for love and joy, then thank God and share all love and joy with our neighbour. ( neighbour is all we know and all we meet, friends and not friends) God sees our loving efforts, and God will approve and bless us. We will be sign-posts to our Heavenly Father, who is Love and loves us.
The Holy Spirit will help and guide us, and Jesus our Saviour will lead us all the way: JESUS IS THE WAY. God knows us and will bless us. We might stumble and forget at times, but then we ask God to forgive us, and carry on loving and caring. I say this with love, nb. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

I don’t believe one can come to know God by reading the written Word of God/bible.

The only way to come to know God is to allow God to teach him or her.

(1 John 2: 27) “But you have not lost the anointing that he gave you, and you do not need anyone to teach you; the anointing he gave teaches you everything: you are anointed with truth, not with a lie, and as it has taught you, so you must stay in him.”

(1 Corinthians 2:10-16) “These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depts. Of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God.---------“

His biography? You mean the Gospels, that tell you very little about him?

Jesus was the Word made flesh. If you want to get to know Him? You need to get to be taught by a competent pastor-teacher the Word of God from all the books on a regular basis. For, the more Word you begin the see clarified and understood? The more you will understand the "mind of Christ."

Matthew 4:4

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

To get to know the Word of God is to get to know Jesus! For He lived by every word found in the Scriptures. When you grow in having the "Mind of Christ" in you.. the More the Holy Spirit will be able to use your life to express the righteousness of Jesus! False doctrine will not work, though it does tend to make the self righteous feel good about themselves. You need to find a competent pastor who is trained, prepared, and able to properly teach. James 3:1 tells us that only a few out of the many will be able to. Do not quit until you find.

Grace and peace...

They key is getting good teaching that uncovers and expounds principles that expand and excite you. That should be an ongoing experience for all of us. Do you read much or listen to good material that is there on the Internet? Send me a PM if you want some suggestions.

The key is to get good teaching, and the only place one can find that good teaching is the Holy Spirit.

One can only come to know God if God brings him or her.

(1 Corinthians 2:10-16) “These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depts. Of everything, even the depths of God. When you were a baby? Did you have an instant relationship with your family by having conversations to get to know them? NO! They initiated to you. You had to learn from them a new vocabulary.. slowly. God will do likewise. So, sit still and know He is God. Wait and learn patience. It will cause suffering in your soul for a season.. Go about your life. God is not weak in making His will for your life known.

It began with "mommy" "daddy" and "no" "yes" etc. Ignorance is your big enemy at this stage. For, you can read the Bible through a hundred thousand times, and still be ignorant. God gave the body of Christ pastor-teachers to teach you and build you up in truth. We need to be careful. Jesus warned that the majority of pastor-teachers (the broad and wide road) is filled with destruction. There are thousands of denominations each with something special to appeal to our arrogance and fleshly desire to serve God.
They will destroy your spiritual life. Jesus also said that only a few find the Life He came for us to have. James 3:1 warns that if God had His way there should only be a few teachers found amongst us. Instead we have way too many everywhere! Confusion is not the foundation for a relationship. Many today have a dysfunctional relationship with God for that reason. Babies are easy to make laugh and play. Its when we need to grow up that believers begin to find suffering and unhappiness. Some denominations try to keep them as babies for that reason.

Paul warned in 2 Timothy 4:3 and said that there will be a great many lousy pastor-teachers (broad and wide road) because most believers refuse to see, nor desire the importance for sound doctrinal teachings.

The following verse shows us why we have the mess of confusion as we see in the church (and in forums) today.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.
Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great
number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
