An American dentist with an affinity for killing rare wildlife using a bow and arrow has been identified as the man who shot and killed Zimbabwe's most famous lion earlier this month, local officials claim.

Dr. Walter Palmer, a dentist working in Bloomington, Minnesota, is said to have paid $55,000 to hunt the 13-year-old lion, named Cecil, according to a report from The Telegraph. The animal was allegedly lured with meat out of Hwange National Park -- a protected area that bans hunting -- into an adjacent hunting zone where he was shot with an arrow. The lion was then followed for 40 hours before he was ultimately killed with a rifle.

I'm all for hunting, if you then use the meat, but luring an animal out just for sport that's a different story.

Pretty much. Don't get me wrong, I can see aspects of hunting as incredibly appealing -- that is, learning the skills to track effectively and pit your wits against theirs in some ways, but I still don't really see the need to kill an animal once you've successfully tracked it.

I can condone hunting of animals like deer, elk, duck, pheasant, etc. But big game is almost always targeting endangered species and is more about selfish sport than survival. I loathe it.

That's not hunting. That's downright murder of an animal for sport. My family hunts, including me, hunts. Hunting is tracking an animal, and trying to be as swift as possible in killing. There's a lot in this story I find repulsive, but the most is that they let it basically bleed out for forty hours before actually killing it.

Right. I understanding hunting is going to happen whether I like it or not, just as animals will be bread for consumption whether I or anyone else like it or not, but whenever whatever animal meets its end, I'd at least hope it was swift and painless.

Exactly. Probably the most overlooked thing about hunting is population control. Yes, mankind is civilized now, but nature doesn't care. The food chain is a very important part of nature, and we have our place in it. If we stopped hunting, it would eventually come back to bite us. This is why they have regulations about how many you can bag in a day and such.

Probably because there's no wild lions in Minnesota, but there is one in Milwaukee apparently...

I read about this earlier on FB and it made me really sad and really mad. Like seriously what do people get out of this? You can't just take a few pictures of the lion, or, heaven forbid, maybe film a movie...no...no, that's not enough, you have to shoot it and kill it, so you can have its head on a mantelpiece somewhere in your house. Yay, you killed an innocent creature. Nice going, human race. And earlier I read he apologized for killing it.....um...its a little late now, genius.

Sorry for the rant. Screw this guy, and screw hunting. RIP Cecil.

I agree, I think it's a really selfish thing to hunt big game. They can't just appreciate it for it's created beauty, they have to take possession of it themselves. How utterly devilish of them.

The proximity of a life lost is as irrelevant as the species of that life. We are caretakers of a world given to us to use as we will. Is that not a responsibility to all life to protect it, when sustenance is not a factor?

Why should you point to one evil as justification for not concerning yourself with another? It makes no sense, whatsoever. Your God blew the same breath of air into either of these and for me, both lives matters.

Inadequacies addressed with weaponry 100 times as powerful as that of it's target is an act of cowardice, twice over.
