Sorry, I missed this thread and posted the same story. I've requested the other one be closed.

What is also ignored are the discrepancies in the police report and the video. Police officers often lie in their reports and there is no punishment for that. This officer was charged, but what about the other officer on the scene that claimed he was dragged?

People will sing the praises of body cameras, but the more serious issue off officer lying and training will go unchecked. When police spend an average of 6 months in training before being handed a badge, that's a problem. Perhaps we need to have officers in training for 3 years, then it may cut down on such egregious acts.

Yes. If I understand correctly, the other officer stated that his uniform had the appearance of his having been dragged. I wonder where that uniform has been between now and then, whether the officer has had it in his possession in the meantime or if it was seized as quickly as possible and preserved as evidence. I'm kind of doubting the latter, but hopefully am wrong.

When I first posted this topic, I hadn't seen footage of the actual shooting. I've now seen it.

The officer tells Samuel Dubose to get out of his car and, a second later, sticks his gun in the car window and shoots him in the head. The car then moves forward, but not under the driver's control. He is already slumped over.

There was no altercation whatsoever. Mr. Dubose was not shot while fleeing. The officer was not dragged.

Here is a link to a news story that contains a video of the actual shooting. Clicking my link takes you to the news page. Don't click the video on the page if you feel it will be too too hard for you to watch. It's not bloody or graphic but is a man being killed.

And to think that a few days ago we were all aghast that another officer was threatening to "light up" Sandra Bland with a taser within seconds of her refusing to get out of her vehicle.

There are people out there who are on a hair trigger and they have guns, and some of them are in movie theaters and some are in police uniforms. As much as we'd like to assure ourselves that there are steps we can take to protect ourselves in either instance, there probably really isn't.

to be fair it's ambiguous, I THINK I hear the sound of the engine reving when he shoots, I know he turns on the car just before, doesn't jutfy anything but it's a bit hard to tell if he was moving forward and shot, or shot and him slumping sends the car off.

Thanks, watching it and hard to tell there seems to be a sound starting up about 2 seconds before the shot is fired about the time the camera gets shakey that sounds like a car revving up can anyone identify?
If the car was revved up would that make shooting the man in the head ok?

To me it looks like Dubose started the engine and as he did so, the officer reached into the car and the car inched forward at that point, he drew his weapon and fired. The camera is jumpy so it gets a little confusing, but there didn't seem to be anything to indicate the officer had any reason to fear for his life.

I see what you're saying. It may have been the little bit of forward motion you can get simply from taking your foot off the brake but not yet applying the gas. Then after he slumps, the car quickly moves forward, but not under control, as if his foot is now actually on the gas pedal. If the officer was honestly afraid he was going to be drug by the car or that the driver was going to run into somebody, killing him like that didn't make the situation any better. It made it worse.

At any rate, it's terrifying.

We had a prominent citizen in my area restart his car and back into a state trooper's vehicle in the midst of a traffic stop. It was never really clear if he meant to do that or was simply fleeing the scene and was too flustered to get his vehicle into the proper gear before hitting the gas pedal. Either way, he was acting against the law. However, the trooper didn't shoot him. He called for backup; the man was later apprehended, tried and sentenced to probation. That's how these things should end. :(
