This was mentioned (by Cappadocious) in a thread in a theology forum here, and I wanted to ask more about what this means. I've never heard of it?

Regarding "taxis or order of worship: That is to the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit."

This was in the context of iconography, and limitations on depicting the Father.

Thank you all for any insight!

A taxis is the proper economic order we follow in things. There are taxeis of the Gospels, of the Scriptures writ large, of initiation and Holy Mysteries, of the degrees of ordination and monastic tonsure, of the liturgies that make up the Divine Liturgy, etc.

For example, baptism precedes Chrismation, the synoptics are (traditionally) heard before St. John's gospel, the diaconate precedes the priesthood, the Liturgy of the Word is before the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Thank you. So is this merely an order observed within prayers, or the service? I'm looking at your words TO the Father THROUGH the Son and IN the Holy Spirit, and trying to draw conclusions based on that. Am I reading too much into it then?

There are many different taxeis in Orthodoxy, but the notion of taxis pervades pretty much all aspects of Orthodox practice.

The old doxology "glory to the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit" (which was superseded by the more familiar "and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit" in order to better defend against forms of subordinationism/arianism) highlights the taxis according to which we glorify God. We give glory to God (the Father) through the Person of the Son in the operation, presence, and life of the Person of the Holy Spirit. Here the taxis expressed in the old doxology makes clear the direction of our glorification, the "order" of our relation to God.

Thank you so much - I was trying to figure out if that understanding was correct or if I was reading too much into it. I get the sense that there is more to appreciate there. But I think I can understand what you are saying. Thanks! :)

Fr. Hopko brought it up a few times especially with respect to the order one first hears the Gospels in.

Makes sense, I have heard him say that there is an order to reading the Scriptures, I just never knew the term
