• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

WHAT DOES HEARING FROM GOD COMMONLY SOUND LIKE?

Seems like 'physically hearing from God' is a common question on this forum, so here's a little something I hope might help...

It's tough to know when and how we should be hearing from God as people talk about hearing God speak, but seldom explain how this should sound. Hearing from God shouldn't be the same as hearing audible voices the way we do when speaking to each other. So if you do hear Him or demons as someone mentioned, in an audible way it's probably more a case of your mind turning the sound of your thoughts up a little too high.

If this is the case the best thing to do is don't panic. And if upon reading this you think you may have unintentionally developed a few bad habits when it comes to hearing God's voice, don't worry. The mind is designed to be very creative, and it learns habits - good and bad - very quickly. It's quite simple once you know how the dialogue between God and Men should sound for most followers, to reign any less healthy patterns back in until you achieve a more healthy dialogue.

Here are a few pointers to help make conversing with the Lord a little clearer:

1. When it comes to communicating with God via our minds, generally speaking the 'voice' we hear shouldn't be heard with our human ears at all. It's a voice that usually sounds like a thought. Hearing from God via our minds, mostly forms part of our 'thinking' process. It shouldn't be audibly heard outside of our heads. Knowing how a conversation with God should generally 'sound' will help you to bring any loud voices back down to a healthy level, and the conversations between you and God to a place of truth instead of one your mind might be having fun exaggerating or even creating.

2. Do demons speak to us in audible voices? No, this should not be happening. When God created the Heavens and Earth He gave the world certain rules and boundaries. There is a spiritual life and there is the physical life. We don't visibly see demons or hear them speaking to us in an audible way via our physical lives. Imagine how frightening that might be. But we do hear from demons in another way. Often via our emotions and via our thoughts. Sometimes you might think of doing something bad. That thought definitely does not originate from God. Again, these voices should not be audible. They will usually come as a thought. When the devil gives us a thought it is often disguised as our own so we might be more likely to follow the bad advice. Getting it right isn't always easy. But God gives us discernment to recognise His voice from that of the devil. And as we grow in the Lord, we get better at being sharper listeners!

I hope you'll find that helpful. And don't forget, there is a wonderful and powerful blessing that our Lord has ordained upon His children:

"For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Tim 1:7. (American King James version). So explore this blessing with God and enjoy being on your way to experiencing a happier and healthier soundness of mind.

May the Lord bless you on your journey :)

Before I was taking meds I thought that God was talking to me. Told me to flunk two classes I needed for my major, upper division, screw around doing embarrassing, random gestures all of over campus, wonder out to the beach late at night, and alone, and eventually to go kill myself in order to go to heaven within a short period of time. Now that I'm on meds I don't hear voices anymore. I went to church with my mom and brother today. Today the pastor was talking about hearing the voice of God. I wonder how you can tell the difference between his voice and your thoughts? I thought that there was one time that God talked to me directly during sleep paralysis. It was mostly just scripture, about suffering. At the time I had prayed to be freed from demons because I was starting to hallucinate even around the age of 15/16 seeing red eyes, wondering what it meant, not knowing I was probably developing schizophrenia. His voice was very quiet. I could barely hear it. It was more of a visual experience than an auditory one. I had strayed from Christianity right before that because I thought God couldn't exist if there was suffering in this world. I think there were a couple of times, that I posted on here under testimonies, I think at least a year ago, about God trying to send scripture messages to me in my sleep, but they were only small phrases or cryptic through imagery. It seems to me that God only communicates to me when I'm at my absolute worst, and crying out for him, and not just going through the motions. I felt like [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] today, because I've been feeling like a failure for not having a job or a college degree by now, at the age of 25, and the pastor was saying that if you feel puffed up or like a failure, it's probably because you have put people's opinions of you before God. I don't know why I feel like a failure, other than societal expectations, since no one tells me that I'm a failure. I guess I have been pretty distant from God. I don't know if I've ever come to trust Him, or be close. I guess I need to work on that if I ever want to be happy.

I agree with everything the original poster said about hearing from God. It has been my experience that that is how both God and unfortunately the devil will communicate to us, through the thoughts we get in our minds. Even visions come through the mind.

The hardest thing about this is that it is often, I would say always hard to tell if it is God, or a demon speaking. So I generally just wait and see the outcome. If it is God something good will come that glorifies him, if it is demonic it is normally geared for our harm, to make us look stupid, or do stupid things. There will be no way to distinguish the voices so don't try.

I will finish off with a few examples of things I have heard, some that glorify God, some that I am still not sure about.

One good one was I was praying one night that God bless His people and lift them to positions of influence. I went to bed and asked God if he had anything to show me. I kept seeing a picture of my mother in my minds eye, but it meant nothing to me, so I went to bed. The next morning my mother came in to me and said "This morning the LORD gave me a verse of scripture for you. It was 'may you be in health and prosper even as your soul prospers'". So God was showing me my mother would bring His word to me.

Another one was we were praying that awaerness be bought for the North Korean prisionors (In death camps) . I saw a picture of female Musicians standing before the president of North Korea. A few days (some time later) Dami Im, and Dani Minogue female musicians crossed the border of North Korea to bring awarness to the very negative situation in North Korea.

Another one which was a bit hard to tell who it came from was: I was told a very famous person would die, with in a month they died of unnatural causes.

Finally there was one time I had a very strong experience, and God spoke to me and asked me "How would I like to be stabbed, with a knife, in the valley". The valley was a place in my city where I went to witness about Jesus. I was scared and did not know hat it meant. But that day I went to the valley. The very first person I went up to to ask to church said to me they had no interest in church, and were an atheist, they started unbuttoning their shirt, and showed me scar marks from where they had been attacked by a person with a knife, and spent time recovering in hospital, they asked me how could God allow this. However this story has a good ending, they eventually after a few meetings decided to come to church, and they gave their life to Jesus.

Just one additional though to add to the original post, it was said that you can never physically see a demon, spirit being. Yet I have heard of many stories where pastors, in third world countries, where witchcraft is practiced, that have physically seen demons. So it is probably not a rule per say that God has put limits on this.

One example of this is a pastor I know, saw a woman who was able to change here appearance into that of a pig. Another pastor had a demon sit at the front of the church for a few months (everone could see it). During a session of prayer it was forced to leave).

I don't really know how to hear from God, but I do believe that I have a sixth sense, that I can sense spiritual beings in my room sometimes. I can sort of "feel" them by using my heart and emotions. They sometimes watch me with their invisible eyes while I am reading the Bible, but I can't tell whether they are demons trying to prevent me from drawing closer to God or angels trying to bless my reading.

Of course we would all hope that they are angels...because no one wants a bad spirit messing around with them.

I was dead serious when I wrote this post by the way, so I absolutely forbid you to laugh at this like it is a joke or something. I'm not taking it that way.

Yes, I sense spiritual beings as well from time to time. It is often hard to tell if they are angels or demons. If I was you I would not try to sense them, as it is better to seek God than to invite the spirit realm around us. From what you have told me I would say that those beings are probably demons, but don't worry about it, every Christian has demons around them. I actually pray and ask God to keep demons away from me and my thinking, this has been very successful for me, and I find I am not troubled by them like i used to be.

I'm the same way. It's an innate sense and feeling rather than a physical voice or thoughts. As my psychosis includes voices and unwanted thoughts, differentiating between feeling and sense as opposed to voices and thoughts makes it clearer to distinguish between angels and demons: following the latter always leads me further away from God, following the former leads me closer. It's pretty black and white for me, at least.

Wow that is bizarre, so strange that I really have trouble believing it. But just incase you are not lying. Yes God will forgive you for any sin, and he will help you to overcome the desires and feelings associated with it. But I still have trouble believing what you have said.

I don't really know how to hear from God...

Consider reading Leanne Payne's book Listening Prayer, she was a christian counsellor / prayer minister with psychiatric and literary training, and wrote very helpfully about these matters.

I honestly dont think our bloodlines are pure enough to really hear God
anymore. If you do you have to be real quiet and listen. Anything that tells you its God is not...if it terrifies you its not.

I do think one day we will hear loud booming thunder..and UNDERSTAND HIM....but not yet.

I disagree about demons don't talk to you audibly, because they do me. I have had many very serious attacks from demons, but God always gets me through and I have been reading about casting out demons and they say that schizophrenia is usually caused through generational curses that can be cast out and the demon that is usually responsible is 'double minded.' The way God speaks to me I call it hearing His words, I don't hear His voice but His words, that might sound strange but I have heard somebody's else described it the same way. I think God talks to people in the manner they respond to best, but if it is God only good can come out of it. It brings you peace.

I have to agree that to hear the voice of God is not hearing an actual voice but is a strong sense of doing something that comes to you when your mind is completely free of thought so you know the thought is not your own. I do disagree that demons CAN speak to you if they enter your body and in my case it screamed at me in another language and I don't know what it said. There is no mistaking being entered by one of these things. It's very invasive and if your soul screams for Jesus the demon is forced out. It happened to me once 20 yrs. Ago and has never happened since. I found out after it happened the girls right across the hall from me were doing a satanic seance at the time it happened. Disgusting. But otherwise, no demons cannot talk to you telepathically.

As long as the definitions of "further away from God" and "closer to God" are carefully defined, I think we're on good ground here. I suggest that "closer to God" is best "agreement with the things God has quoted the Son Personally as saying within Holy Scripture".

You will find God by hearing his word coming out of the mouth of Jesus Christ in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the king James bible. Jesus Christ is the living God that can set you free from your oppression.

So....people do actually believe it's possible? Assuming that one could actually hear and feel the word of God...should he tell anyone? And if so, who?
