If you don't mind someone who is theologically a Pentecostal but who has been a member of a Baptist Church for 14 years throwing in a few thoughts; even though every Christian is able to pray in the Spirit (tongues), I need to ask, why would the Son of God need to speak in tongues?

A look at Tongues in the Word of God

By

Dr. Jack Koons,

You do not have a Doctorate, but represent yourself as if you do.

Given that bearing false witness is a sin, why exactly do you think anyone should listen to what you have to say?

Dr Koons.

If you think that Charismatics are wrong in the way they use the gift of tongues, how do you explain a friend of mine who had never been to Africa, praying in a prayer meeting, and a Ghanaian brother heard my friend speaking the praises of God and encouraging words in his own village dialect? My friend was merely speaking in tongues as Charismatics do, and yet he spoke an understandable language. If this can happen someone speaks in a tongues language by faith in this situation, then it is strong evidence that any Charismatic who speaks in tongues in the same way is speaking an articulate language that, if no-one else understands it, God certainly does and appreciates it.

When I was part of a Charismatic church, I was praying in tongues in a service, just quietly, and a lady sitting beside me told me that God spoke to her through me in the Maori language. I had no idea that I was speaking that language. I was just praying in tongues as all Charismatics do.

This testimony is just one of hundreds of similar testimonies. Are all these people lying? Or are you out of step with what is actually happening in the Holy Spirit among many groups of people who are worshiping God in a way that is out of your personal experience.

So your arguments against the current use of the gift of tongues by modern Charismatics falls flat in the face of two reliable witnesses.

Aka hearsay.

It can't be heresay when the event with my friend and the Ghanaian brother was witnessed by 25 people at that prayer meeting. And the lady who told me that she heard God encouraging her through my speaking in the Maori language was telling the truth. I knew that lady well at the time I was going to that church and she was a good and honest person, not given to lying. This is eye-witness evidence that would stand up in any court in the land. I should know. I work for the District Court in the city where I live and I know what evidence is heresay and what is not.

Your telling us is hearsay.

You appear not to know how to spell it, so I doubt you could define what it is.

To their credit the Roman Catholic Church will not accept hearsay as attestation for any miracles; there has to be actual scientific evidence; properly validated doctor's reports, eye witness testimony and very real proof. Hearsay is not sufficient. The RCC learned from the Reformation on this point; other churches have yet to catch up and expect everyone to believe everything they hear.

Good people who have no problem in not believing the Fable of the Miraculous Beam will be perfectly certain they saw someone cured of MS at a healing meeting because they saw it happen. I am afraid seeing is not sufficient, and hearing what someone else saw even less so.

It would be good if every church used the same rigour as the RCC, because then we could indeed separate the genuine from the over-embroidered.

Now be nice!
Oscar is a Kiwi so you will need to have a degree of understanding.

Even though Rome will eventually check out the various fables regarding Mary, they are certainly content to let the average rank-and-file member to believe what they want if it keeps them happy.

As for the "evidence" that Rome used to gather information that they used to pronounce Mary McKillop as one of their saints here in Australia, it seems that they will believe almost anything.

Yeah... we're pretty rustic down here. We just have a simple belief on God's Word when it says "these signs shall follow those who believe...they will speak with new tongues...they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover."

Actually the OP's article just trots out the old worn-out chestnuts that countless other cessationists have burbled on about. It's a pity that he didn't have anything better to offer to really stimulate our thinking.

From memory, I think its been maybe two years since I've had a stimulating discussion with a cessationist on this forum. And as you say, most simply repeat the same old tired 60's pamphleteer arguments - and that can be about as boring as it can get.

Hello Jack Koons,

I pray in tongues daily, by that I mean unlearned language that I don't understand that edifies me.

All members of the church I'm in pray in tongues privately and in meetings we have 2 or 3 gifts of tongues, each followede by a gift of imterpretation, also from God's Spirit, not man's mind.

Is there anything you wish to ask me?
