I looked for the answer to this question in the stickies and didn't find it, so forgive me if I missed it. Why does anyone care about reps? It reminds me of the scene from "The Office" when Stanley tells Dwight that the exchange between Schrute bucks and Stanley nickels is the same as leprechauns to unicorns.

So, what's the purpose, and why are reps desirable? I might understand if they were purely merit based, but explicitly asking for them on a forum (and having a whole forum devoted to getting reps) seems to defeat that purpose.

No purpose - something to do. 100% calorie-free workout. ;)

Anymore, with most members being maxed out on their reputation, which, years ago was very difficult to do, but which today can be done in as little as a couple of hours, reputation is really more for the comments people make rather than the reputation points they receive. Reputation comments are a good way to encourage someone re something they said in a post, communicate agreement, etc. That's about it.

Psa 33:10 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought:
He maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

Oh it says it's to avoid troll attacks. That makes sense.
sorta, they should have an age of account bypass on it though.

Example (Data pulled from users on the site today)
User Guru03 (joined Nov 2, 2012 (Still active as of today) ) but doesn't have a lot of post (24 total) has 0 likes.
So though they've been on the site for 3 years, they can't post in the chatbox because of their low post count.
