• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

But I'm starting to think about mugging someone literally more and more frequently (on account that I hate having SSI as the only source of income). I've tried selling religious items, playing the lotto, and even online surveys, and yet I still feel unsatisfied with my financial life. Every time I've told somebody about my problems, they either want to give me platitudes, or basically don't want to hear about it at all. What can I do?

I am not sure legally what one can do to generate additional income while on SSI but here are some suggestions. Try finding a hobby that produces items that can be sold for a profit. Examples include knitting or crafting candles, soaps, or cards. Visit flea markets, auctions, and yard sales and resell your finds. Alternatively scour eBay and other e-commerce sites for the same purpose.

Perhaps it is not necessarily your finial state that is creating dissatisfaction, but rather a desire to do something you find meaningful and fulfilling. If so, please consider volunteering. Search for a local group or organization that involves disabled members. I live in a small community but here I believe we have an organization that welcomes individuals with disabilities and involves them in the community and each other through, meetings, projects and volunteer work.

I mean this politely, but if it truly is your financial situation that is creating dissatisfaction, I urge you to seek Christian counseling on the matter. One will never find satisfaction in finances; enough is never enough. Attempting to fill the void left by depression through money will only lead to disappointment.

I don't know. I share your frustration, and your situation.

Do you have a hobby that you could turn into an occupation? It would take time, but perhaps something could be done. The lotto is a dead end; forget that one. But something that you like doing, and which other people might value.

Alternatively, is it possible to return to college to study for a qualification, perhaps even distance learning?

I hope these don't sound like platitides; I wish I could do more.

Thank you very much for taking the time to offer me ideas, Fortran. I know of one hobby, but I'm not sure if it's popular. I was thinking of learning how to make lucha libre masks (Mexican wrestling), but one thing scared me: the overall cost of the basic tools (X-acto knife for fabric, sewing machine, fabric, the whole nine yards). I also have psychotherapy, but I'm afraid to tell her the truth on account that she would offer me stupid ideas. Volunteering sounds good to me. Flea markets, hmmm....

Hello Catherineanne, I was thinking of learning how to make those Mexican wrestling masks, but I'm not sure how popular it would be. And I would like to go to college, but my emotional problems are severe at times. And no, your suggestions are not platitudes in my book. Thanks for replying.

Sorry you are struggling L2g, I'm in a similar situation and I know how frustrating it can be :( I don't have any suggestions besides just trying to hang in there and getting through this life the best you can and realize even though life feels like forever and it feels like we will never stop suffering or be happy, but the good news is that life isn't forever and goes by quicker than we realize, and we will be in heaven soon and maybe tomorrow God will come and save us. IE: I don't know how old you are but if you are older than 18, realize you will never be 18 again and even though the years seem to drag on forever, once they are done they are done and we will be in heaven much sooner than we realize :)

Also I recommend sleeping 12 hours a day the best you can...for people like us with mental health issues sleep is very important and if you sleep 12 hours a day, then you only have to suffer for half your life ;) (unless you have traumatizing nightmares/etc :( ) I find good solace in my sleep and it's nice to wake up and realize I'm one day closer to being in heaven.

Thank you for your compassionate reply, Pellets. I'm 23.
