Most likely I would say,

"Follow Jesus. Listen to your heart, don't always follow your mind. God dwells in two places: in heaven and in the hearts of the righteous. Because the devil can mislead your thoughts."

I say I deal with clergy pensions, usually I'll throw in a joke about atoning for my youth.

If they clarify that they mean what do I do in terms of my Christianity, I tell them that I spend a lot of time in contemplation and prayer so that I may understand His will, trying to live the best life I can, and seek to grow with thoughtful discussion with others. At which point most think that I've confirmed my dull Christian stereotype and go on their merry way.

Hmm. I really dont know what to say when suddenly thrown this question by someone ive just met.
I do a lot of things.

I wonder if I should just say I read the Bible.

I mean, people want to know if you a student or working..its either one or the other I think. Or I could just say Im a working student. Of the Bible.

I mean I could answer nothing, Im unemployed at the moment, will you give me a job?
But that might be too much information.

Or I could say Im a gardener or I garden. Or I look after the house. or I read. I do a lot of things, whats it to you? I could be really rude about it I suppose.

That is a very specific question to me, regarding occupation, either for pay or volunteer. If someone responded with, "I read the bible" I'd think them to be sanctimonious. If they said instead, 'I read the bible and write bible studies" then it would be different. Because to me having an occupation (paying or not) is about serving others. The only exception is if a person is a student, and in that case, they are generally studying to be in a position later to have an occupation and serve others with skill.

On other occasions, I am asking what are their hobbies - which could include reading the bible. In those cases, I generally phrase it as, "what do you do for fun".

Hmm i wonder if young mothers get asked this question and answer...I breastfeed and change nappies. What do you do?

I help out with bibles in schools. I teach children to sing.
I dont know.

Can you answer with what you would say? Dont try and think of stuff for me. I do heaps of things. I could just deflect the rude question and answer...guess.

My answer seems to change according to my mood and the person asking.
Some days I say, not a lot.
Other times I say...I do all sorts of things.

lately ive been saying Im taking a break from studying.
People used to assume that if I wasnt working I was looking for work and then pity me cos I hadnt found anything. I hate that.
But when I did have a job, they would say oh. at least you have a job. Or Im glad you are busy.

I dont really know the point of this question. If they arent actually working while Im meeting them, I dont want to start a conversation about work. Its so boring!

In the UK when someone asks "What do you do?" they are asking who do you work for, whats your occupation.
Most of the time I reply " I don't!"

I don't like to define people by their occupation. You might be employed as a lawyer or a garbage collector, should that really be used to define who you are as a person?

I think I was in college when it dawned on me that people weren't just asking what I did for a living but why they were asking. They were trying to figure out how much money I made. When I understood that I stopped telling them what kind of work I did/do. Now when someone ask me “what do I do?” I tell them I live my life then I move on to hobbies or something like that.
