Prophecy is not *just* a little guesswork

Hi there,

So I just wanted to expand on prophecy in general a little (more) in the sight of God and you. It is a great gift to be able to prophecy meaningfully and a great exercise of the intellect to understand it (eventually). However, like most Heavenly things, it does not come about by what is most immediately evident to the unredeemed mind. Just as Heaven does not come by observation, so prophecy does not come by just a little guesswork.

What does this mean? Well, it means that depending on the sort of prophecy you are gifted with, you will have to endure through a great deal of guesswork, before God is able to reveal to you to exact nature of the prophecy. For example, Ezekiel was told to create a model of a Jewish city and pretend he was laying siege to it - Isaiah was taken to a breadmakers shop and buried his clothes somewhere, elsewhere. These are practical things God asked them to do, so that He could speak to them prophetically, with the Jewish people. By carrying out the guesswork, but clinging to it, they were able to determine the prophecy - with the strength of the Lord.

I think what is interesting, is that although the guesswork may vary, the exact prophecy, visionarily speaking - does not. It is not even clear at first, in what way the guesswork will subside, or be entered into - such that you cannot say that God is working predictably or with a certain pretense in mind. It may be the wisdom behind this, that allowed the Lord to see what God was doing when He was working. If indeed there is more intelligence behind the guesswork, in the end - even, better -- for gain with contentment in God, is good.

Over time, learning not to resist the way in which the will of God interacts with the guesswork you present to Him, or better yet, acknowledge was ultimately His - we can be more and more intelligent (to begin with).

I hope this has been of some instruction to you.

Indeed, guesswork is not what we should indulge in when trying to understand Bible prophecy.
Firstly, prophecy is for believers, 1 Corinthians 14:22b, so that cuts out the most of mankind. Then for true believers in the Lord, there is the problem of being sucked in by false teachings. Isaiah 29:9 If you confuse yourself, you will stay confused.....And; Isaiah 42:19 Who is so blind as My servants.....
So who can and will know God's plans for our future? Daniel 12:10b....only a few wise leaders will understand.

.

Often God will send a Biblical inspiration to me out of the blue....
then later God will send a second witness from another source.

I've learned to pay more attention to these sudden inspirations...
the still small voice of God... than hours of forced intellectual study.
However, study is important... especially the study of Bible history...
because Bible prophecy often uses imagery from Bible-related history.

Not really. To be able to prophecy meaningfully means doing 2 things: 1) do what God tells you to do, and 2) say what God tells you to say. Punto, period, full stop. Whether or not the prophet understands the prophecy is irrelevant. Whether or not the prophet understands the instructions given in how to deliver the prophecy is irrelevant. In fact, the prophet is irrelevant. The only thing required of ther prophet is complete and precise obedience to the instructions of God.
depending on the sort of prophecy you are gifted with, you will have to endure through a great deal of guesswork, before God is able to reveal to you to exact nature of the prophecy.
Nonsense. The "before God is able" is the phrase that tosses the whole statement into the trash can. God is never dependent on us, and never requires our services to enable Him to do anything. There can be no "guesswork" with prophecy, the prophet simply does what God says. The prophet's "guesswork" doesn't enter into it. The prophet is authorized to say "Thus saith the Lord God", which allows no room at all for "guesswork". God either said X,Y, and Z, or He did not.
they were able to determine the prophecy - with the strength of the Lord.
Totally backwards. Prophets do not "determine the prophecy" with a little help from the Lord, they are given the prophecy, by the Lord. Otherwise it's just more made-up human gobbledygook.

If you're speaking of the God of Scripture I don't think there was any room for guesswork. They either got it right or they died!

Deuteronomy 18:20 'But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.'

21 "You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?'

22 "When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him."
