Forgive me if this is in the wrong section; I didn't really know where to post. I really like to read, and I hope to be a writer someday. Most of my books are secular. I'm not really interested in Christian fiction. I don't mean to say all Christian fiction is bad (I own some myself,) but I find the plots and storytelling to be very similar. Most of the characters don't have much originality or depth from what I've gathered, and most of the books are set on a farm or in an Amish community, which gets old after a while. I don't mean to criticize anyone's taste in books, I'm just not interested in most of it.

I enjoy drama, psychological thriller, and horror novels (along with some young adult.) Some books do contain a bit of questionable content, obviously nothing horribly obscene, although I try to avoid it. I also notice many elements of magic in fantasy and sci-fi. While I would never read something like Harry Potter, I don't know if a regular fantasy novel containing light elements of "magic" would be acceptable to read. Despite all of this, I appreciate literature and I enjoy reading. I believe books carry more impact than movies or TV shows because a book is meant to be read and absorbed, along with whatever ideas are in that book, and this is why I'm most concerned with books.

I don't want secular novels to pull me away from God. I've heard some people say Christians shouldn't engage in anything that isn't related to or directly acknowledging of God, and that Christians shouldn't entertain themselves with anything secular, such as music and books. I want to be fully submitted to the Lord, and I don't want to do anything contrary to His will, but I don't know what to think about this issue.

Hello,

I've read a number of Christian books where it feels like the author is compelled to have someone come to faith by the end of the book. While that's great, I would agree that it does tend to make them similar. There should be a wide variety of books that don't have anything to do with Christianity, but don't contain questionable content either, which I see no problem with reading. I have a friend who alternates between reading one fiction book and one non-fiction book. Another friend regularly reads books written by authors that he disagrees with. There's some really great non-fiction Christian literature out there too.

I think that one needs to be discerning about what sort of communication to take in, but just being secular in origin doesn't disqualify something as far as I am concerned. I do limit my secular music listening, and at one point would not listen to any secular music. You already seem aware that the genres you prefer tend to have some serious danger areas. At some point you will have to get with God and discern for yourself where the line is.

Have you read anything by Frank Peretti? He is Christian, and can develop characters and multiple threads, and his stuff is contemporary period fantasy. You might like it. He does have a few weaker books, but I like him. You could also look into C.S. Lewis's fiction and George MacDonald.

I enjoy Agatha Christie, Nelson Demille, Clive Cussler, and other similar novels. I enjoy just having a rest from more complex study reading and to read something just entertaining and interesting. I don't like horror or gory novels or graphic violence in novels or movies. But a good adventure story is great for just having a mental break.

There is no right answer to this. If you feel it's wrong, don't do it. If you feel it's okay, then do it. As you get closer to God you will find you don't want to do things that you use to think were okay, but others can't tell you what God may be requiring of you.
