Proverbs 1
Everyone read Chapter 1 if it is the 1st day of the month today. Come back and give us your thoughts....Tishri1 :wave:

just saw this...is this AWESOME or what??!!! THIS is soooooo what I need. it's officially July 1st, so i'm starting with
Proverbs 1, yay!!

Two things(well three) that stand out for me:

The repeated theme of the "fear of the Lord"
"wisdom is referred to as "she"
that wisdom almost "shouts" to those willing to listen

Note: it must take a lot of determined effort to "not hear" the "crying out" of wisdom....this ties right into verses 24-30. In the deliberate ignoring of and spurning of the wisdom being practically "shouted out" they seal their own destruction with their own hand.

How tragic.

I love this Chapter!!! When I was homeschooling my kids, I used this Chapter to teach penmenship......Memories of going over each letter to make sure they first traced then copied my own letters and words.... to creating letters, words, then sentences of their own.
I will be back I'm going to read it now! We talked about these verses alot.

I just realized that these first few verses coincide with the Rabbinical discussion behind the 4 questions asked by the children in the Jewish Passover Seder. Where they talk about the four kinds of sons who hear the story and how to tell them the story so they will receive it. Actually the whole chapter speaks to those 4 sons.
1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, [are];
2To know wisdom and discipline, to comprehend words of understanding; בלָדַעַת חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר לְהָבִין אִמְרֵי בִינָה:
3To receive the discipline of wisdom, righteousness, justice, and equity;
4To give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth.
5Let the wise man hear and increase learning. The understanding man shall acquire wise counsels
6 To understand an allegory and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Wisdoms shout in the street; in the squares she gives forth her voice.
She calls at the head of the noisy streets; she utters her words at the entrances of the gates in the city;
"How long will you naive ones love naivete, and the scoffers covet scoffing, and the fools hate knowledge?
You shall repent because of my reproof; behold! I will pour out my spirit to you; I will let you know my words.
I feel like at some point if we ignore the voice it gets dim and disappears but if we repent we can hear it again!

As a nation though I think the Church is behind much of the calamity in the world and in our Government because we have gone deaf to his voice.
Major teaching and repenting needs to happen. But I have hope it can since I was saved during one such revival in the 70's

i'm sorry, just seeing this now....i was at a laptop computer that didn't "understand" me, had a mind of its own, and it had NO MOUSE!!!! LOL!

Yes i agree with the "hearing" less and less and how devastating and tragic this is...

when children are learning Proverbs, it seems like there are good "seeds" being "planted" that will bear fruit in due time, as i believe that God will bless those who learn Proverbs as He promises He will do....there's literally "treasures" in them there words :)

Ok, re: Proverbs 2....here is a real TREASURE!!

These verses hold precious promises for those who "seek" diligently wisdom (which is based on a Godly "fear of the Lord") and in essence, dig as with a shovel, as if for hidden treasure, and it promised that they will surely find it:

"Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:" ~Proverbs 2:3-11

...and Proverbs 3.....beautiful promises of such depth and God is telling us right from His own mouth HOW to be blessed of Him and how we can have long, and blessed lives with extraordinary favor. In particular, these verses sum up all that is said in Proverb 3 and "ties it all together, the bottom line being, if we heed these verses, we are in "right standing with God" and giving Him His due honor and fearing/respecting Him for the Most High God, El Elyon, the living God, Whom He IS:

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." ~Proverbs 3:5-7

Chapter 8, regarding wisdom personified, is read by some people as a Messianic passage.

not sure what that means....would you mind elaborating?

Thank you kindly.

Brinny I have a thread created for each chapter here for you(or will) Im soooo excited you are joining this study/devotional!
Go check out the thread for Chapter 2 and add your thoughts there too ....and Chapter 3 and sooo on....by the end of the month we will have a thread for each chapter and the idea is what ever date is on the calendar, we will read THAT chapter in proverbs. That means that every month we will read through the whole book and each month we will have a new perspective and be able to come back to these same separate chapters and share.

The hope and promise is for Knowledge and Wisdom to grow in us as we read through Proverbs, whether posting here or not (but I hope we all post daily too even if just to say we are reading each day....) so yeah a chapter a day Brinny and your chapter two notes are awesome would you copy them over to the Chapter two thread we started, so I will remember what you said next month when we all hit chapter two again?

This series of threads looks like becoming my new favourite. :)

The Book of Wisdom:

Always worth reading in relation to Wisdom in Proverbs.

Hi,

I have used this much. In one lad's case and he didn't listen, it was to tell him how to become wise. His Dad asked me to speak to him.

Wisdom, who I call God's Gal-Pal, rather than wisdom personified, but from my own work, if any work can be called my own, when the subject is understanding the Bible, speaks below on what she does when she is not listened to.

One day, I used that on a man. I first told him of my capabilities, and frightened his street buddy. This man then, with full verbal armor up, came to battle me. I said to him then, on your third lie, I will get up and laugh at you. Yes, I quoted Wisdom, God's Gal-Pal to me, and the one to me that God assigned to test all men, meaning males and females, for one attribute before she rewards them. It is their commitment to honesty.

The man and I talk, and I ask him why he is not working, as he is young and on the streets. Lie one happened. I said nothing. Lie two happened. I also said nothing. Lie three happened, and I also said nothing. My body did. I stood up, turned around and walked off, with not a word to him or a look back, just like Wisdom says here. I also listend to nothing of what he said then.

The man, uses lies and I figured that was why, I was sent to him to talk to him. In those day, it was either Jesus unknown to me, or The Holy Spirit unknown to me, and later I learned it could be Mary, or The Father unknown to me, that caused, and causes me to engage two street people, when normally I would not do that.

I figured God wanted to tell him something. It is that his lies are not that good. I only remember his emotions. He did not stand. He launched every set of words at me that he, could on my departure. And they were Those kinds of words, but he had gained. He had gained that some people know he is lieing when he is lieing. And, I am glad he was told that, maybe he can start getting off the streets now.

And again here, are ideas repeated to me. One is death in many places Biblically is life after this life, but without God.

Another is God's definition of a fool. God defines fool as one who does not believe in Him.

The definiton of foolish was really helpful for me later. In one case, Biblically it is said to not put God to a foolish test. And that has much more meaning to me, if I use God's definition found here, rather than the human definition of fool.

The other is the suggestion, that Wisdom is no personification, but really what God made/creatated in Proverbs 8 a real spirit person, who is female in gender.

LOVE,
...Mary., .... .

Proverbs 1 New International Version (NIV)
Purpose and Theme
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.

Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.

10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

Wisdom’s Rebuke
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[d] she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:

22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

Footnotes:
  1. Proverbs 1:4 The Hebrew word rendered simple in Proverbs denotes a person who is gullible, without moral direction and inclined to evil.
  2. Proverbs 1:6 Or understanding a proverb, namely, a parable, / and the sayings of the wise, their riddles
  3. Proverbs 1:7 The Hebrew words rendered fool in Proverbs, and often elsewhere in the Old Testament, denote a person who is morally deficient.
  4. Proverbs 1:21 Septuagint; Hebrew / at noisy street corners

1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding; 3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity; 4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion: 5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother: 9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not.

11 If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; 12 Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit; 13 We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil; 14 Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path: 16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

17 For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird: 18 And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives.

19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

20 Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places; 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words: 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

23 Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you.

24 Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof: 26 I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah: 30 They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof.

31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.

32 For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.

Anyone wish to join me for this in the month of December?

Christmas is a point of contention for many people. Well, what better way to say "to heck" with everyone else's opinion and we take the month to delight in His word and glorify Him regardless of whatever the 25th day means to you, me or friends?
