• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, I’ve just joined this forum for advice.

I’m getting confused; I was diagnosed with schizophrenia 6 years ago by the hospital psychiatrist. My current psychologist and the one before are both contradicting the hospital doctor who given me the diagnosis. Both psychologists are clinical and have proper qualifications etc.

They know my full history, told them I believed I was being attacked by demons. They told me they don’t reckon I have the illness because I have had no symptoms since five years ago in 2010.

The whole thing started when I got obsessed with demons and paranormal phenomena I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Then I Woke up screaming one night, my ex-wife who is nurse taken me to hospital they said I had a night terror and to go back home. Anyway next morning we were sitting on the couch talking about the night terror I had, and the stereo turned on by its self at high volume. Turned it off, a little while later it turned on again. Turned it off it, turned on again. This happened 3 times this freaked us both out. Then my mother in law said electrical things play up sometimes. I had this stereo for ten years and it never did this!

Anyway to cut a long story short I then had what some would call a psychotic attack. Doctors are now saying what I had was because of stress lol. When will they be consistent?

Psychology remains historically a very new 'science' and many people would dispute that it is even that. A great deal of the knowledge of psychology relies on the experience of the psychologist themselves and their ability to use their insight to gain and understanding of what may be going on. Hence the process of diagnosing an illness is complex and doctors can give conflicting diagnosies based on their different areas of experience and expertise. This is why there is no overall single framework for psychology as it is very much a question of trial and error. (I think) Diagnosises are made based on 'clusters' of symptoms rather than on establishing a known cause. In some cases, there is a degree of scepticism over whether medications actually work, and in some can make the symptoms (such as depression) worse and can lead to addiction.

At this point I would just trust your therapist and be open about your doubts as it will help the doctor-patient relationship so that you understand each other and know what you are doing. I sincerely hope that you are one of the lucky ones who was misdiagnosed and I'm sure it will be a relief for you if that is the case but stay cautious and take the medications until your doctor says otherwise. If they do reach the conclusion it was a mis-diagnosis, I imagine they will take small steps to be sure and to play it safe.

Thanks for your replies. Well I just spoke to my family doctor and he said I’ve definitely got it and to take the meds. Contradicting my current clinical psychologist and the previous one I was seeing. My psychologist didn’t say anything when I told him I forget to take the meds sometimes. I questioned if it had gone into remission? He wants me to be re-evaluated… I think I will stay on the meds and be cautious because I don’t want to go through what I went through five years ago. I will keep an open mind tho about miss diagnosis.
