I don't understand this whole phenomenon, never have. The ambiguity of it bothers me. It seems like speaking in tongues could just as easily be a demonic thing than a biblical thing.

Spouting gibberish is easy to do in any setting.

I have to concur, the ramblings which I have heard referred to as speaking in tongues is imo extremely unnerving. Perhaps Hollywood has hyped this phenomenon, as I find the practice akin to being in some way possessed.

God I pray you would drop this Gift on them, as they speak out what they call gibberish as they eat their words. Let them feel the closeness of your Love as they have this incredible Gift bestowed upon them and let their life change until the Joy of your Love overwhelms them.

I don't have a set time to pray - I talk to God all the time. But the times I pray in the Spirit are the times I really don't know how to pray or what to pray for. I have never had a time when I prayed in the Spirit and did not see some result. It may not always be what I prayed, but it will be God's Will and there will be an answer - yes, no or wait. I don't question the answer because I know that God is working it out in His time and His Will. I do not do this in front of people because they think of it as is expressed in these threads - showing off. It is only between me and God. It is a beautiful gift and I thank my God for allowing me to be a part of it.
Yep this would be me too  When I've prayed in tongues, it's been privately as well.

Speaking in tongues is the best way to pray in The Spirit because of our unbelief and lack of maturity in The Lord. The Lord could use our own language and make us prophesy instead. But then we may doubt and interrupt trying to change the words, and turn to the flesh.

It does not come from us. It's not a skill that anybody learns or teach. You can't predict who will get it or when. But one thing is certain, it won't come for the first time, unless you are clean.

I find it funny when I see some people saying, let's speak in tongues. That sounds very weird and fleshy to me. The bible says very clear that not all spirits are from God and it commands to test the spirits. People do not lead The Spirit even though The Spirit submit to the prophet. No one can't tell The Spirit what to do and when. We only can choose to allow The Spirit or not.

When the Spirit guide our tongues and emotions, we learn God's way. He cleans us and comfort us.

The hardest thing for me to understand is when someone says that he or she received the baptism in The Holy Spirit and then they doubt about God's existence. That really puzzles me.

Just deleted the question I had before. After reading your post a few times over and trying to understand
I do not wish to complicate it any, I,ll drop the question I had.

...
Sorry, i find "lack of maturity" an ironic phrase to use when referring to something that, if not believed to be of God, is often believed to be incoherent babbling like a toddler.:sorry:

My apologies, i know that adds nothing to the discussion; it's just something that made me chuckle.

Here's the interesting thing. You will not find one instance in the Bible where an angel spoke using an incoherent babble, not one. I will bow out of this thread, I think I have made my point :)

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." 1 Corinthians 13:1
There are Angelical languages or tongues.
When someone speak in tongues, this person is not bringing a message to be understood unless there is interpretation. The tongues are for God, and for the spirit of the one who is speaking.

When an angel appears, he comes with a message. A message can only be delivered in the language of the one receiving it.

It will be non-sense for an Angel to come to human with a message in another language.

In Isaiah 28:11 the Lord says:
"For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people."

Speaking in tongues is a beautiful tribute to God. When we don't know how to pray, our Spirit knows what to say.

There are two kinds of tongues - one is your prayer language between you and God and the other is when God uses it in churches or anyplace where it is needed. If it is in church and tongues are presented - that is from God and needs to have someone speak it out in their language. Your prayer language is just between you and God and no one needs to speak it out.

The first occurence of 'tongues' (i.e. languages) in the Bible is recorded in Acts, where the disciples are communicating to foreigners in their own languages. If that particular gift were to be given today, it would be in the presence of foreigners in their language, as a sign. Tongue in Classical Hebrew signified 'language'. It mustn't be forgotten that many non-Christian cultures have this phenomenon. I myself can do it on a whim, just for entertainment. Knowing that it's gibberish. Surely if 'tongues' as we hear them in Pentecostal establishments were real, we should conclude that they were divine languages (plural). Question: Why might God need even one language, let alone more? He doesn't communicate with his angels by means of speech. We mustn't anthropomorphicise him.

This particular phenomena has always puzzled me ... Surely the purpose of this is to convey a message but how can a message be conveyed if the audience cannot understand what is being relayed?
I don't know if this has been answered already.
Tongues in a church setting is a message from God,
which must be interpreted (in the church's language)
by another Spirit-filled Christian.
These are 2 of the 9 spiritual "power" gifts (1 Corinthians 12).

Tongues are also used in a private setting by some Spirit-filled Christians
while they are praying "in the Spirit" to the Lord God.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

This is where the people who don't believe Speaking in tongues still exist and has ceased.
Problem is...if it did..I suppose knowledge is gone to...because it vanishes
And that all prophecies have failed
The main principle of this scripture is Charity, God's love..never fails.

It doesn't mean that they have gone away for good. It's just like me typing right now. In a few minutes it will cease, I will have said my piece and stopped typing.

Does anyone here practise speaking in tongues?

Have you any testimonies relating to your experiences of speaking in tongues?

:)
I tried learning French once. It didn't go well. :p
