15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. - Revelation 13

Does death come before the mark of the beast? Scripture indicates that "as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed." It looks like we will be martyred away before having opportunity to receive the mark of the beast.

The mark of the beast will come after the Rapture. The world will be in such a mess - that is when the anti-Christ appears and brings some organization to the mess and that is why people will be worshiping him. He will implement the one world government, one world money, one world religion and give the mark so people can buy and sell. If the mark is refused you will be killed.

We are born into the beast system. The beast system is earthly governance and dominion imposed on citizenry and in the past it was imposed religiously by the relgious authority of its time.
Revelation of John doesn't say that we haven't been marked, but rather the fact remains that we are born into the beastly system of the earth. It clearly states that ALL will receive the mark.

Let us take for example the following versus below:

Revelation 3:21
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Revelation 12:10-11
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

The common theme to Christianity as preached throughout the gospels and Jesus himself reinforces it, is the following:

BE FAITHFUL EVEN ONTO DEATH

If you accept this as the central theme of Christianity then you can look at the last bit of Rev 12:11 where it states:

THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO THE DEATH

This central theme is by which we overcome the mark of the beast. It doesn't mean we don't have it, because we are born in a beastly system, but rather it states that we keep the faith even onto death.

Also if you note in Rev 12:10 the OVERCOMERS are those who are singing with a loud voice in heaven saying:
Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God

It should be clear that if those that John pictures in heaven are declaring the victory that they had over the mark of the beast, then these heavenly voices must once have been born into the beast system just like their BRETHREN who came after them.

These voices are from the Old Covenant who had not yet recieved the promise of salvation until messiah came. In this declaration they are announcing salvation under Christ who has NOW COME. This means that these heavenly voices have since departed from the earthly beastly system and now are singing the song of Moses.

These departed OVERCOMERS have gone through the blues so to speak because they experienced mortal life under the beastly system where they had been killed for their testimonies and now they find that their faith onto death is what made them overcome the mark of the beast that they were born into. They overcame the mark by their own blood as martyrs for God.

The central Christian message is typified by the following outcry from Saint Paul:

2 Timothy 4:6-8
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Saint Paul was going to be executed by the beast system and his martyrdom rallying call to his followers was typified by this selfless act:

Finish your race and keep the faith even if they cut you up into small little pieces.

Selfless act which devotes one's life to the cause of Christ at the expense of death is how one overcomes the mark in God's books.

My own opinion, which could be wrong, is that when the image appears to come to life, it will demand everyone worship it, and there will be some gathered immediately there in Jerusalem, to be given a choice to either bow down and worship the image or be put to death as the consequence for not bowing down.

The buy/sell requirement involving the mark will come afterward, a global requirement.
