being at a potluck with 12 people or so

I liked the event but.....I felt like I was hearing bits of small talk everywhere I went, so it was hard to focus on what different people were saying. I feel that everyone knew everyone else for a little while at least, so we were "newbies". This was a church potluck. Has anyone else felt like they were sort of on the "outside" looking in? My husband and I are not real talkative....

I've found this works for me, find someone
to engage in conversation and talk with that
person.

Not everybody can do well making conversation when so many others are talking, I got sensitive
hearing so I hear lots of conversations...many of
which I wished I hadn't heard!

As I got to know some people at church, I generally talk with them at potluck or I will
find some people who aren't being social butterflies and go chat with them.

You could try doing that... little by little.

yes I find myself getting sensitive too. Yeah I guess I don't know the people too well to know who is more sensitive. I tried talking a little to everyone. I figured out I was up at 5 am on Sunday and found myself getting tired physically and mentally after 1 hr after dinner.
