Who should the US military fight, or what should they do?

No country on Earth? ISIL, Russia, North Korea... there are a number of potential threats. The only one that I think warrants military action, though, is ISIL. After that, maybe a couple decades of peacetime? Maybe?
Aside from media hysteria, ISIS is a. Not a threat to anyone outside a small part of the middle east, b. Probably not actually defeatable by conventional military forces. If you think of the US military as a sledgehammer, ISIS is most like a swarm of rapid breeding mosquitoes.

Yes, but what about when they are, in fact, a threat? That's more what I was thinking about.

Though, we'd have a devil of a time beating them conventionally. I 100% agree with you on that.

It seems like there is no country on earth that is a threat to the US....
A few months back I attended the International Avalon Air Show in Melbourne Australia where I had a rather interesting discussion with the Lockheed Martin representative (with photos) regarding the F-35 that Australia has unwisely decided to buy.

I raised the point that from what I am reading that all these sources are saying that the Russian Sukhoi T-50 will outclass the F-35 in virtually every category. Now I have no qualms with Russia having these aircraft but I am certainly concerned that Russia will be supplying Indonesia with about 50 T-50's.

As hard as I tried, I could not get the Lockheed Martin rep to say that the F-35 would outclass the Sukhoi T-50. I said that my understanding is that if Australia were to send our 50 F-35's against 50 Indonesian Sukhoi T-50's that it would be unlikely that any of our planes would make it back home where he had no answer.

His final remark was "Well, we've got Australia's back with our F-22's so if you get in trouble we'll be there". My reply was, that's great, so when we need you in a hurry you will somehow send over your F-22's to help us and don't forget it's a long way from the US to Australia.

Essentially, once the US replaces their current stock of fighters with the already out of date F-35 that the US will not have an effective air cover against those countries that will be equipped with the Russian T-50.

I usually leave such matters to government and trust God will care for His own and this world, but will venture a few thoughts for some consideration:

> The USA probably should not try to police the whole world, for it seems presumptuous and is mostly resented ---making us hated;
> I doubt that it is wise to seek to make Islamic and dictatorial countries into democracies, for they don't want that and will probably never want it ---for Arabs have always been tribal and care not for compromise with a congress or parliament, etc., and dictatorships never let go once they are allowed in;
> It seems far too costly in money and lives to be spreading our ways all over the world;
> Maybe the USA should only defend and strengthen our allies in various places, and leave other countries to find a way to co-exist;
> A very strong defensive system within seems the wise thing;
> Much prayer is surely needed for God's care, leading, mercies and blessings, 'til He calls His saints up to Himself.

It seems like there is no country on earth that is a threat to the US....
Belshazzar and others with him thought the same thing of Babylon until the Persians walked in and put a quick end to him. So much for the thick walls of Babylon and their army.

I fail to see how the US is an exception to any past great kingdom or nation that has fallen from a high stature. If anything, with the technology that exists today and how warfare is evolving, its in a more precarious position. Unlike the days of WW-II, if a Pearl Harbor style attack were to hit us from one or multiple near-peer enemies working together, its not like there's going to be months or even weeks afterwards for us to rebuild and take the fight to the enemy like we did with Japan. A single bomb nowadays is capable of wiping out what could take years or even decades to repair/rebuild. A superior military only goes so far. As another example taken from WW-II, look at what happened to Germany. From a military perspective, they were quite capable of winning that war, but they made a number of mistakes, which the US seems to be paralleling: overextending, making more unnecessary enemies, developing superior arms that are too expensive to sufficiently mass produce quickly and deploy effectively.

I already see an Achilles Heel within the US in the form of computers and having so much stuff integrated for the sake of convenience and $$$.

The take home message is the only reason we're on top right now is because God allows it.

In the past America was considered unconquerable. That is why socialist/communists devised social Marxism. It is a long term plan to destroy American Culture of freedom and patriotism. Especially the altruism of Christianity. They have nearly completed the plan.

Who needs socialism/communism when the US seems to be doing a fine job of it themselves? Just look at the music and entertainment industry.
