Magnificat-203x300.jpg

I just discovered this today when I opened up the Scriptures to Sirach.

Compare Luke 1:52 with Sirach 10:14 and notice how similar they are.

"he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree" - Luke 1:52 (RSV-CE)

"The Lord has cast down the thrones of rulers,
and has seated the lowly in their place." - Sirach 10:14 (RSV-CE)

The significance of this is that Sirach is one of the seven deuterocanonical books which are missing from Protestant Bibles.

Here's the full Magnificat (Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition):

Luke 1

46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.
51 He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:
55 As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

Anyway, an inspired quote from whatever book doesn't prove the latter's canonicity. The Apostle Jude, in his letter, also quotes from the apocryphal book of Enoch, but it doesn't mean that this book is inspired.
I think that a Protestant should rethink their position on it when they realize that there a lot of quotes or paraphrasings in the New Testament that come from those seven books (as post #3 shows).
