I have not worked for a number of weeks. One of my friends told me that I should apply to any job even jobs I don't like such as fast food because if I stick to my interests it may be longer before I find a job. He said having a gap on my resume will raise questions during interviews. However I went to a networking session yesterday and told them about my friend's advice and they said it was bad advice. They said that since God is in control he may open a door pretty quickly to something I am more interested in.
I have a degree in biology and worked 2 yrs in a lab in the past but I have found that lab jobs may not be a good fit for me because they require attention to detail which is an area that is a weakness for me. My greatest interest involves my faith so I was thinking of applying to jobs with religious organizations, such as Christian radio stations. Since searching for a job is a full time job in itself, if I take a job I do not like than I do not have as much time to search. However I only have less than $2000 so can't wait very long so I may have to take a job I do not like as much.

Well, when I was in same situation as you ppl would tell me that. I always thought that was silly advice they didnt know what i was capable of or how i budgeted my money in the lean times.
Doing a job you hate thats really low paid and has bad working conditions can make you even more stressed out. And no time to find the job or work you would rather be doing. I think in those in between times you better off studying, even if its just reading books from the library. Or volunteering for things that you enjoy.

This is just my opinion, but from life's experience, I would go with whatever work you enjoy doing most. The starting pay is only temporary. If you honor God in your job and follow Him, He will take you to new positions more enjoyable with better pay whether if it's within the company or elsewhere.

Don't worry about the gap in the resume too much. Always be upfront and honest with your employer. Emphasize the positives. Let them know you haven't found a job you're interested in yet. What they also look for very highly are enthusiastic people willing to join the team. If you want the job bad enough, you will get it.

During the job interview, the people interviewing you are your new best friends and family, especially your new boss.

Consider the availability of jobs in your geographical area. If half of college grads are working for low paying jobs outside their area of expertise, you might need to take something temporarily that you don't like so much. You don't have to take something you hate, but you also need to think practically about your life. Paying your bills is a much bigger priority than being selective about jobs you like. After all, it's better to be working at a job you don't like and have a roof over your head, than hold out for what you like, and end up homeless.

I have been working outside my field for two thirds my profession's wages, in a job I am very unsatisfied with - only because I did not want to be on social assistance and I have a family to support. But my dissatisfaction with my job motivates me to continue looking for something more suited to my interests, education and skills in the evenings. And in the meantime, I am going to work for my employer as to the Lord, doing the best job I can while I am in this position, and I express my gratitude to my God for providing a job that keeps us housed and fed.

Well I dont know..whats in your area?

Think up a program you could maybe present once a week. My dad started doing one cos he collects old vinyl records so he just makes selections and we announce them with sometimes bits of trivia thrown in. We go to the studio and pre-record it a gets broadcast once a week.

I dont know..your interest in biology..could talk about animals? Gods creation..interesting facts? Team up with an expert and interview them?

There is no harm in applying for a job so you should do it. It does not make sense to put yourself in an all or nothing type situation where you either get your preferred job or you have no job. You should hope that a good job you are interested in opens up but if it doesn't then you need something to fall back on that could sustain you until a good job opens up.

A gap in your resume will not affect you and simply filling it in by getting a fast food job isn't going to boost you either.

It sounds like you are running out of money, so you must take a job you do not like.

God had Jesus work as a carpenter... the apostles and all of the people in the bible really had ordinary jobs.

What would you do if God wanted you to take a menial, low paying job (don't think He won't do it)? Would you ignore what He wants you to do and try to find something better, or would you take the job that He opened up to you?

What if God wanted to put you in a place you really don't want to work just to see how you'll deal with it, and how hard you're willing to work while you're there. God needs people that are willing to work the small jobs as well as the big ones.

Blessings,

Alan

Yes, God is in control. That doesn't mean you should just sit back and wait for the job. It means that whatever job you have it's because that's what God wanted you to have.

Prospective employers do not like gaps in employment. If there are two candidates of equal footing, and one worked at fast food while trying to find the next job, and another did not work, they will most likely hire the first. They want to see someone who will do what is necessary as opposed to someone who would appear to be lazy.

Consider a temp job to pay the bills.
A lot of employers these days have the 90 day thing, so they not going to hold you to it permanently if you find you dont like it. And least its some money coming in.

Keep looking though and making your requests known to God. It is tough out there.

As long as you can afford to support yourself not working, then take your time and get a job you want. If your personal ability to support yourself runs out, then yes be responsible for yourself and take a job even if you find it unpleasant.

Start with any job that you can pay the bills with, and then look for a career that would interest you, once you have that covered.
