Believers cAn use the spiritual gift of discerning of spirits. We as believers can also prophesy.

However many people that claim psychic ability are misguided and I find they are using whatver extra sense wrongly and almost always predict doom and gloom and either profit from it or dont give glory to God.

That was the reason why I specifically excluded those doing this for profit from this discussion. I am only looking at people like my friend who use the ability for good and not as a money-making venture.

There are, however, people who listen to spirits.

If they are listening to the Holy Spirit they are said to have the gifts of prophecy or words of knowledge and wisdom.

If they are listening to other spirits, they are operating in the realm of divination which is expressly forbidden in the bible.

I agree.

There are definitely psychics and psionics with active "power." Some are for God some arent (on purpose, or in general.)

If someone is a Hebrew or Christian, or I would suspect even Muslim, it isn't a weird thing to be intuitive - even so much you were considered psychic by some.

I suspect many of the judges, priests and prophets of God were intuitive types, while many of the kings and mighty biblical heroes were extroverts. In fact, the king-priest relationship works like an extrovert-introvert "symbiosis."

I agree to this also.

And, I also made a mistake in my first post, using "intuitive," and "introvert" interchangibly. The introvert is the opposite end of the extrovert, but extroverts can be intuitive also (and, in fact there are two specific MBTI personality types with extroverted intuition.

I'm quoting this because Aryeh posted this clarification to what I quoted from him before/above.

Then my own contribution:

Imho, many people have that. "That" which is being called psychic, intuitive, words of knowledge, gifts of prophesy.

Even police detectives call it their 'gut feeling', which sometimes isn't based on much fact whatsoever, even at times none.

I've had 'knowledge' beforehand of many things, through just a flash of thought/knowledge, or a dream. And I'm thoroughly convinced that it was God guiding and protecting me. Because that's what always happened. It was for my own good or protection.

Honestly, if I had $1 for every time I've received knowledge/insight/intuitive fore-knowing or something of that nature, I'd retire... lol.

God is Good!, I tell you, and I do believe that He (through the Holy Spirit as is said) gives some words of knowledge, which others call intuition or psychic.

But honestly, the only 'psychics' that I've heard of are ones who sell their wares. And therefore, of soothsayers beware.

Those who are just like the friend in the OP's story, they, I thought, usually say they are 'intuitive', or having a 'word of knowledge'. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I know.

Sometimes mothers have 'intuition' towards their children, wives towards their husbands, husbands towards wives, friends towards friends, and as I mentioned even the police's 'gut feelings' ... these things have been around forever.

I believe that sometimes God wants us to know something and He shows it to us, somehow. Sometimes through intuition (as the OP's friend told her), or sometimes through dreams.

I believe Discernment is very Very important with things of this nature.

But yes, I do believe that God guides us, at times, through these types of 'personal miracles', as I see them to be.

Glory to God!

Do some people have an intuitive or psychic ability? If so, is it in any way wrong if they say things about what the sense? I have a dear friend who admits that she is intuitive, that she can sense things.

A number of years ago I contracted a virus that affected my heart. I had gone to the emergency room after feeling chest pains and they sent me home. A day or two later I had lunch with my friend who, upon meeting me, clutched her heart and told me that I had to get to a hospital immediately. I spent the next week in intensive care. She later told me that she just sensed that something was wrong with my heart and that I had to get medical treatment.
I think it is possible for a Christian person to sense, like this. But, also, this can be done by someone who is not of God's Spirit.

I think you need to be able to pray and go with however God guides you. The Bible says He will guide us "continually" (Isaiah 58:11). So, we can have God always personally guiding each of us, so we are not depending on certain people, only at times, to help us know what to do. But He does use us to help one another.

In any case, even if someone gets something right, about you, this does not mean you need to constantly depend on that person. Also, if someone helps you with a medical condition or a physical situation, this does not mean you should be heeding that person's personal advice.

For being guided in good intuition for personal relationships and life decisions, it is good that you become more and more reliable in sensing and submitting to how God personally guides you in His peace > Colossians 3:15. And know the Bible and get to know who is a really good example for you, who helps you get more real with God and helps you in how to relate in intimate sharing and in loving any and all people like Jesus wants us to do. This takes maturity in yourself, as a Christian, and we need mature example role models, not only intuition which might be practical and only at times.

I don't necessarily have anything against claims of this nature (from a Christian perspective) that certain people may be gifted with a heightened perception of empathy, intuition that others are not as sensitive to. We're all unique and are given different gifts. Everyone is capable of evolving their perception as time goes by.

A few verses come to mind:

John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Basically, listen to what they say, ask the Lord for discernment and worry not.

To clarify, I am only talking about genuine organic experiences of the extra sense, including prophetic dreams as one is not able to control those, and guidance by guardian angels. I am not talking about tarot, divination, new age practices, demonic influence or any other assorted witchcraft as Christians should make no concessions for such things.

The thing is with abilities - everyone here is talking about getting info from bad spirits but if you take it back to basics. Spiritual senses are like physical senses. You have spiritual eyes like physical eyes. You have spiritual feelings like physical feelings. An empath for example might just have over heightened spiritual feelings (that is like me actually)... now take an example. You could physically see that someone has a cut on their body. You see it. Or a bad person could say "hey, do you see that cut on them?" when they might have caused it in the first place. And a good person could say "hey do you see that cut on them?" ... either way you are utilizing your own sensory perceptions. Spirits don't feed us information, they just control information (that is the same with Jesus too)... so of course you want to make sure you are only listening to the 'good people'... but it doesn't mean the abilities are bad of themselves or sourced in 'other spirits'. They are just natural. That's the way I see it.

My friend is not in the business of offering psychic readings. But if she sensed something she wouldn't hesitate to tell someone to take or not take certain actions.

Is it wrong for someone who is intuitive to offer such advise? For the record I don't think it is, but I wanted to hear what others might say.

To be clear, I am not speaking of people who read tarot cards or crystal balls or Ouija boards or those who consult deceased relatives or those who offer psychic readings as a business. If posters start discussing those topics I will ask the mods to close the thread.
I have seen some very remarkable examples of what might be called psychic communication. When I was working aboard a passenger ship the Bridge staff had a very good view of passengers on the viewing deck from behind tinted, one way glass. On many occasions, when one of the crew was having a very good look at a pretty lady, the person being looked at would turn and return the look directly (much to the shock of the crew member), this in spite of the person on the outside of the glass being perhaps 20m away and having no ability to see anything behind the tinting.

Your friend might have been given a warning by God for your sake.

Most of us, including myself, have what some might call "psychic accidents"--or they might be messages from the Holy Spirit.

Don't worry about it, and don't seek such experiences in the future.

Just for the sake of completeness, I will say there are intuitive types that can also, as per a gift of God, "sense" evil. Even so much that they claim to see paranormal, or interdimensional activity. This could be for many reasons.

I know of an Orthodox bishop (now retired) who has this gift from God. Someone would come to him for confession, and he would tell them their sins, usually causing more remorse and true repentance. One time, a woman came in to the Cathedral who was having a hard time with life. She was contemplating suicide. During the middle of liturgy, he stopped, walked away from the altar (something one is not supposed to do), and walked over to the lady and said, "daughter, why are you in such distress?" The woman broke down, told him what was going on. He asked her to wait until the Liturgy was over, then went back to the Liturgy, finished, and came back to the lady, and talked with her, convincing her not to commit suicide.

While this is true, I only know of one person who can testify to this, and I can only get to him by e-mail. I am not willing to share his e-mail address with you, so as far as you know, this is apocryphal. Nor am I willing to share this bishop's name. I don't know him personally, and I don't think it is proper to ask him about how well he flows in the Spirit.

There is a clairvoyance that is of the Holy Spirit, and there is false clairvoyance that is from evil spirits seeking to delude people through their own pride and vanity. (Spiritual delusion)

That is clearly a supernatural event and has nothing to do with intuition or observation. It was either from God or from the devil.

If it motivated you to immediately pray for your brother, I would say it was from God. Otherwise .....
I don't agree that its either from God or the devil in that sense. Not everything is the devil Imo, for you to get insight from the devil you would have needed to open yourself up to the occult.

If you didnt, and you sense something bad about to happen,,,say your mom or someone close to you is about to die, that isn't from the devil. I think God in his kindness allows us to have foreknowledge of events in our lives that will be turning points. The death of a mother or sibling is major, you have a deep connection with them ...so of course you'll have a feeling something is off. Things like this certainly is not the devil... I think its god just giving you a heads up to prepare your self

It's likely that Basil Isaacks's just throwing this out there as a piece of healthy advice, because there are quite a few people who do make the mistake of seeking out such experiences, and it can lead to harmful spiritual consequences for them. (Spiritual delusion)

Perhaps, but the way in which he phrased his advice indicated that I was doing this. That is not the case.

That's what I always do. If you perceive a loved one is in danger, of course, the first course of action is to call them and pray for them or just pray for them if you can't call them.

God has given people certain gifts, and the enemy works to corrupt those gifts. It's also true that sometimes God will let people know something they couldn't otherwise know. The important thing is that a person filter their gifts through their faith in the one true God, who will direct them to use them in a way that is scriptually sound and pleasing to Him.

Which is precisely why I excluded discussion of those who offer psychic readings as a business.
