I'm guessing it can very easily lead to lust of the flesh, jealousy and idolatry (a worship of the flesh if you will)

I'd be interested to hear others views on this. Remember that our flesh desires that which is contrary to that of the Spirit.

Yeah but so can going to the local swimming pool on a hot day - and we don't ban that prior to marriage.

I guess I want the why's.

This might seem sarcastic, but Im not trying to be,
But if God says something is a sin, then its a sin, plain and simple.
I feel maybe, God prohibits some things in order to protect us...
Thats all ive Got.

For those who believe that pre marital sex is a sin - can you please explain why?

I don't need verses claiming it is sinful - I want to know why it is sin. For example - is it sin because it harms someone in a very specific way? How is it inethical? Specifics required.

How does a truism "IF God says it is sin, it is sin" help me understand why?

Are you asking me Why God made that a sin?
I dont know.
I know that he has our best interest in heart.
He created humans, he knows how we think/feel/act..
He didn't make this a sin just because he felt like it,
there is a reason behind it, that reason, Is one that God knows.
Im not mentally fit to understand each and every one of Gods ways.
He is far too divine for that.

I am wondering why you are asking this question, however, being a Married catholic?

Why would being a married Catholic prevent one from wanting to know?

It is my assumption that a question such as this would come from someone who
wasn't married and Was struggling and wanted to see if it was really a sin..

Or someone who wanted to debate about why they dont think its a sin.

this isn't the case, she's a married woman and a catholic.
It just surprised me because If you're catholic, you believe thats a sin, correct? I was just curious as to why she would ask why its a sin.

I didn't mean to insult anyone.

Lets take in instance Abraham. Had he stayed with his one wife Sarah, and waited on the promise, and just had Isaac, what a better world we would have! And then after Isaac he took further wives and had brought in more of the Arab race.

O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! - Deuteronomy 5:29

If mankind would keep God's commandments, have patience, and wait. It would be a better world. By the time JR is born in the world he will have a loving and blessed family to be reared in. But because people are not taking heed to God's ways things are not well with the world.

Oh! I'm sorry, sister. I didn't catch your age on the first run through. I'm sure that you're "in the thick of it" on this topic with your peers. ;)

But asking "why" is not always indicative of someone who is looking for an excuse to go out and get laid, I assure you. What God prohibits speaks as much about His character as what He encourages. How can we say we know God if we are utterly mystified as to His motivation?

God bless :)

I Just don't feel I can Say Why, now that I think about it.
I know God is doing it to protect us and that is the only reason I can give, Because I don't possess the knowledge God has.

thats like asking,
why is Stealing bad...?
Well, stealing is bad because its mean...
why is being mean bad...?
because it hurts peoples feelings...
why should we care about peoples feelings..?
because God says so.

Thats usually where things like this end up.
Simply because he says so.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer, But I can't lie to you and say I know gods EXACT Reason.

Thank you - you understand my question and the intent behind it.

I know God prohibits things for our own Good..
I cant say EXACTLY Why this is for our own GOOD.
I feel you can only get too deep into some things, the rest only God knows...

I guess i just don't know what to say.
Sorry I'm not understanding the question..
The thing is, i COULD COME UP with reasons why I THINK God made it a sin..
But i dont want to be completely wrong and..
1: be Deceiving people
2: Putting words in Gods mouth.

I hope you understand.
God bless you

Well, sister, I can't really speak with a Catholic voice, and I no longer look at sin "as a list of actions to avoid", and even if I did, I find the arguments about why pre-marital sex should make the list to be rather circular (fornication is sin, pre-marital sex is fornication. Why? Because pre-marital sex is sin so it must be fornication! Ugh.).

But if you allow me to side-step that particular mess, we can examine how our sexual choices can be governed by the two most important laws that Jesus gave. (Without exclamation points. ^_^)

beginning from the saying in romans we see the beginning of ethics . love does not harm their neighbour .

first ask yourself . how does pre-marital sex harm you and harm the one you are having pre-marital sex with?

second ask yourself . what is your understanding of what it means to become one flesh?

finally ask yourself . what happens in the soul when the barrier of fear that holds death back dissolves? what happens .. if there is not a love stronger than death to stand in its place?

I'd imagine it seems harmless on the surface level but on the deeper metaphysical level it affects a lot . especially if the right kind of love is not present between the two .

Go for it .

Marriage itself has evolved - what it is, and how we govern it as a church and as a legal entity - so I'm interested in how to have an appropriate Christian sexual ethic in today's world.

Love God and love others - gives us what for a sexual ethic?
