An odd reference as historically many barbarians where far more civilized then the people who labeled them as such.

Indeed. The "civilized" Romans were very accepting of many sexual perversions. Yet the "barbarians" were not. At least, not as bad.

Ahh that is very true. . . Not to mention death matches between slaves. And on a related note Roman soldiers had a tendency to become a little bit rapey when the conquered a town/villiage/city.

Not to mention the Greeks. They had a tendency to label non Greeks as Barbarians too and where often just as perverse as their Roman cousins.
