Retail employees who work for Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, Toys R Us, Kmart, Tanger Outlets, Gap, Meijer and a many more can forget having a relaxing Thanksgiving Dinner this year. I think it's a horrible business decision and reflects poorly on our national values. Since when is grabbing the first sales more important than family time at Thanksgiving?

If you don't agree with stores being open on thanksgiving, Christmas or sundays may I suggest refraining from going on those days?

I have, as yet, never had a retailer come to my house and force me to go to their stores or buy from their stock.

Oh poor retail employees.

Guess what shifts those on the oil drilling industry get off?

NONE, not Thanksgiving, Not Christmas, Not New Years.

Their regular shift no matter when it falls.

...obviously some workers have always worked Thanksgiving out of necessity.
Retail is not a necessity.

A drilling rig could shut down for Christmas. Just do the same process that is needed to change a bit.

The only reason drilling goes on 24 hours a day 365 days a year is economic.

Same holds for retail.

Not to mention what the military has to work through.

If you work in retail, you should expect to have to work on big shopping days. I don't think that the shopping season between Thanksgiving and Christmas is really all that unexpected...

Retail is not a necessity.

Neither is having Thanksgiving off. They have a job and will probably get paid holiday pay. Consider that something to be thankful for this year.

Don't forget not everyone enjoys spending time with families overstuffing themselves :)

So they get to work and get holiday pay.

Darn.

Depends where you work. A lot of companies now have only started giving holiday pay if you work a certain time period that day, everyone else gets regular pay.

Honestly some people hate working holidays and some don't really care. My best friend, for instance, works holidays and they just celebrate the other times and it doesn't bother her. Now me ? It would really bother to work holidays.

It's good stores are open on Thanksgiving in a way, as someone always realized they forgot something and have to go for a quick stop! :doh:We do this every year!

Maybe they'd like to get a job working for minimum wage + commission selling pants?

I really don't know much about drilling, but I would venture to guess it takes a lot more effort (and cost) to suspend drilling for 24 hours then closing a store for a day.

And regardless of how you spend Thanksgiving, is it too much to ask to have one day out of the year when most stores are closed?

Well, years ago, the SIMPSONS made a Christmas special in which Crusty says "Happy Holidays NOW in the Spirit of the season, START SPENDING"
You know a problem has reached epic proportions when the Simpsons poke fun at it.

I am already sick of the Christmas SHopping/Black Friday ads, much as I was sick of the election ads a month ago. . I invoke the freedom to spend the holidays as I choose...not as someone else might
Thanksgiving is not a shopping day for me. If others choose to do so, so be it. That is their right and their choice.

What bothers more about it is the promotion of greed by the retailers and the blind and desperate acceptance of it by the consumers. We all know how greed leads to addictions, how selfishness leads to unhappiness.

Truth in Advertising then, if there were such a thing, would be something like this:

THIS THURSDAY THANKSGIVING DAY PUT WAY YOUR TURKEY AND COME OUT TO OUR STORE ! TV's from $99 WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. VIDEO GAMES FROM $15 COME OUT AND TRY TO GIVE YOUR LIFE MEANING BY BUYING THINGS TO TAKE HOME! GET HERE EARLY TO GET MORE THINGS THAN ANYONE ELSE! HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS WINS!!!!! AND DON'T FOR: CHRISTMAS IS A MONTH AWAY ! MAKE IT ALL ABOUT MATERIAL POSSESSIONS AND PRESENTS AND FLUFF!!!! BUY DECORATIONS FOR YOUR YARD, HALF PRCE THURSDAY ONLY!!!! FORGET THE LOVE, THE SPIRITUAL ASPECTS, THE SELFLESS ACTS OF KINDNESS AND CHARITY EMBODIED BY JESUS AND OTHERS!!!!! MAKE THIS YOULE ALL ABOUT MATERIALISM !! LIVE A SHALLOW LIFE AND GAIN PLEASURE FROM MATERIAL THINGS! AND IF THOSE THINGS BREAK, DO NOT WORRY!!!! WE WILL BE OPEN EVEN EARLIER NEXT THANKSGIVING!!!!

Don't know about the rest of you, but that is not how I choose to live my life.

You are free to set the hours of any stores you own.

You're probably right. So what amount of effort (and cost) makes it acceptable to have workers work over Thanksgiving?

And regardless of how you spend Thanksgiving, is it too much to ask to have one day out of the year when most stores are closed?

No. But that's Christmas Day. Although it should really be New Year's Day.

The greedmas season is upon us. Everything is fair in love and war, and greedmas is war. They need to grab every greedmas dollar they can, with unemployment so high,if someone complains, they cn be replaced.
Merry Greedmas to all, and to all a good night.
