People who are in the path of tropical storm Issac should protect their loved ones, their animals and their property by rebuking the storm. See the example from Luke 8:22-25. It is also in Matthew and Mark.

22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.(KJV)

When I was a new Christian, I got caught up in the Word of Faith movement. We used to do silly things like this, too.

I remember being at the Creation Festival and "rebuking" and "binding" a storm. Of course, it never occurred to us that God may have been sending the storm as an answer to prayer for some poor local farmer who's crops needed rain.

I'm confused. Did God send the storm to interrupt the RNC because He thinks the RNC is evil, He thinks the RNC needs a wake-up call, or He thinks any group who holds a convention in FL during hurricane season are asking for it?

Could someone please ask Pat Rob. to explain God's hurricane message for us?

The smarter thing to do would be boarding up your windows, securing lawn furniture and ornaments, stocking up on emergency supplies, and knowing your evacuation routes.

That may work if enough people believe, and are truly faithful. You would have to get people whose faith wouldn't be shaken by the incredible hauteur, and hackneyed displays of disdain and sarcasm many people express for Christian faith.

Personally, I think you would have to think about if what you are asking for is out of fear, vanity, etc., or whether or not it is something God would actually will. Like Publius said, the storm could be allowed to occur so that someone else's prayers can be answered. It can at the same time be a time of testing for believers - as in a Job type of testing.

Pray for God's will, I would say. I think if you are His child it won't matter if a Cat 5 happens, God will protect you and provide for you. Though, He may try you to fashion you for the better in the future.

That's a nice out. When it inevitably won't work, it's because not enough truly faithful people believed.

Or, because someone else's prayers are being answered. Or, because it is meant to happen. Or...

If you aren't going to be one of those haughty, hackneyed, sarcastic, disdainful people I mentioned, at least make sure you comprehend the whole of an argument. Otherwise, take pride in being...who you are.

You didn't actually prove me wrong about anything though. If Isaac changes course, these Christians will take credit. If it stays on course, then it will be any matter of excuse other than the fact that their rebuke doesn't actually affect the weather.

Indeed - this is an argument colloquially referred to as being 'not even wrong'.

Please rebuke it over here to Texas. We could really use the rain.

ho hum...

Again, read and comprehend the whole argument. I never said you were wrong about anything, I implied you misunderstood, and that you were possibly ignorant of the argument. You only stated one possibility, which does not contextualize the point that just because a prayer doesn't work doesn't mean it was because the party(ies) didn't have enough faith. There are other possibilities.

O.K. hope that makes sense find someone else to argue with now ok?

How am I misunderstanding anything? I think you're the one misunderstanding me. I am saying prayer doesn't work period. I am saying that religious groups will rationalize away any number of reasons their prayer didn't work aside from the obvious, that prayer doesn't work.

It sounds like you don't believe that faithful, desperate christians prayed their hearts out in previous storms yet still died just like their atheist neighbors.

I do believe it, and I know it. That is why I said seek God's will first, and judge yourself to determine if your "faithful, desperate" prayer is because of your own want/will, out of fear, or if it is God's will.

Job was very faithful, and a holy man of God. He prayed for the well-being and safety of his children before the left for a party on that fateful day, yet they still died. Even though it was not Job's will for any of his children to perish (or to lose any of his wealth, health, or friends,) God's will trumped Job's will. Likewise, many prophets and men of God desperately prayed for ways out of situations - many times in the most extreme form (death by God.) Yet, God had other plans.

There are cases when faithful prayers do prevent calamity. When Jonah told the Ninevites that God was going to judge them, they humbled themselves, lamented and prayed to God. God spared Nineveh.

I believe that faithful men/women of God have the power to plead their case to God in preventing a calamity, but it doesn't mean that is God's will. I said if you are God's child, it won't matter if a category 5 hurricane occurs, He will protect you and provide for you. I also stated the CAVEAT that He may try you, meaning some of your family members may experience calamity (in the form of loss of wealth, health, life, or metal anguish...) His plan may be for you to die, or to lose your wealth, etc. You, in that sentence, was a third-person inclusive pronoun meaning God may try "all of you/us." Moreover, I prefaced the statement by stating to pray for God's will. That is the main thing it is about.

I think this is God's punishment on a people that own lawn furniture and ornaments.

God controls the weather. Sometimes He delegates His power to us (and not just for the weather). I would rather pray that His will be done, where it goes, what category it is. The winds are 65mph right now--for Florida, that is nothing more than a windy day at Disney World and maybe a cancelled space shuttle launch. For something like this, I wouldn't even WANT God's power delegated too me. There are too many people up there, with vastly different needs and desires, and I just don't know. A large number are God-fearing Christians.

Why then pray for God's will? Surely He already knows it, and is going to do as He wills regardless of the cajoling of the faithful.

There are cases when faithful prayers do prevent calamity. When Jonah told the Ninevites that God was going to judge them, they humbled themselves, lamented and prayed to God. God spared Nineveh.

Just because Jonah said it doesn't make it God's plan -- remember, God had planned all along for Jonah to get the ball rolling in Nineveh -- His will had always been to get the Ninevites into the fold, even over Jonah's objection.

I believe that faithful men/women of God have the power to plead their case to God in preventing a calamity, but it doesn't mean that is God's will. I said if you are God's child, it won't matter if a category 5 hurricane occurs, He will protect you and provide for you. Right, and let us never believe for an instant that God's will can be bent, altered, thwarted, or cajoled.

His will be done -- no exceptions.

The point is: Jesus can rebuke storms because he is God, right?
.
Nothing there indicates that WE regular people can rebuke the weather, right?
.
