How do you know when God is calling you to do something?

If we are truly in the Lord and we feel a strong conviction to do something, then go for it. Of course, we can sometimes get side-tracked by other peoples influences and worldly desires, so I guess just check does your desire harmonise with the teaching of the bible, or contradict? If it works together in harmony, and it feels right, then do it, as the Lord may have plans for you :)

Is there a reason living with parents might stop you? Are they Christian? May I ask the nature of your goal? (Don't worry if you want it to remain private, I understand!) :)

i don't know. lol..it must have something to do with that or else i wouldnt be feeling that way and God wouldnt be calling me..this thought is also in my head because i keep seeing shooting stars and eagles i think...maybe its all in my head but i don't know...this been going on for months..i laid down my life and gave my heart to God, and the problem is that i am afraid to lift my cross back up if i said that right..lol...i am trying to follow Jesus but i cant because my parents think i am crazy, see its wierd with my parents, i dont even want to talk about that but yeah i am different from my family. i just dont understand. i mean nothing would make me more happy then to do things for God, but how does one do that when you can't get around and is stuck in the house everyday? i was thinking of running away but i have many problems, i am scared of a lot of things, but i am really scared i will miss my calling if there is one. and i am trying not to break the commandments, but i can't just sit in the house all day doing nothing, how can i discover myself if i am stuck in the house, there i said it again i am stuck in the house..lol i am 28 btw, i want to move out but my mom said girls shouldnt live alone i mean if thats the case with them i will be stuck in the house forever because i gave my heart to God and dont want a boyfriend or to get married with anyone.

Maybe its me. But my parents definitely put me in a lot of stress

Dear jenniferd828. We are always supposed to follow, never run ahead. If you feel strongly that God is calling you to do something, keep praying and asking God to lead you, then just watch, day after day. God will let you know, you may be sure about it. In the mean-time follow what Jesus tells us in Matthew, chapter 22, verses 35-40: " Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. ALSO: Love your neighbour as yourself." ( neighbour being all you know and all you meet, whether friends or not friends) God will see your sincere efforts, and God will bless you. Keep loving and watching, jennifer, God will show you what He wants from you. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Why cant you live alone? There is no reason especially at 28 that you should be living with your parents...unless you had some financial crises. I think that normal jobs are calling of god as well. People are built with certain talents. You dont have to be a minister or work on a missionary to be doing 'god's work'. You could be a nurse or therapist or many other things. Just think of the motivation behind it. Are you looking to help people?

I think my calling was joining the miltary all though some may disagree. I lost my job through a mere accident that was of someone else doing...and then within that same month my apartment was foreclosed and I was basically left with no options..I cant find all of those things to be a coincidence. I had been talking with my mom for some time before this tellling her how I was lost and needed to find my purpose in life. I had not been happy in my previous work. The job I have now feel so right and natural. It litterally just happend.

I've never understood that thinking. It must be more of an American thing. Were in a hurry to have children, but once we do then we are in a hurry to get them out at 18 lol.

In most any other country you live together to help like family should. Just like on alot of countries they don't send elders to a nursing home. They live at home with their children because they are elders who are full of wisdom after all.

Grant it I am disabled so I am sort of stuck at home until I marry and move out. But still, I'd never kick my kids out. Well assuming they respected my rules.

I feel like God is calling me to do something, i ponder on this everyday, but i can't figure it out and i dont know what to do. and whats even worst i am stuck in my parents house so i can't discover for myself...should i just wait on him or make some kind of move?
I really don't know how to express it in words. But when God "speaks" with me it's a surreal experience. Maybe a sort of out of body experience would describe it? I really don't know how to express it in words. I feel the prescence of God's spirit upon me is how I would explain it. It's like a gentle breeze in a way and I can feel God's spirit all around me. I enter into a complete feeling of relaxion and peacefulness. My mind is completely open and at peace. All my senses are heightened for the encounter. I know it sounds crazy but that's as best as I can explain it.

You are heading off with some wrong concepts.

Your comments contain an unhelpful, non biblical dualism. This is God's world and we work with Him and find Him within our daily lives. The sacred/secular divide has no biblical basis. In the NT some were so caught up with expecting Jesus to come back they had stopped working. Paul said "No work, no food".

Here Paul writes to Christians. It was in their current situation they were to
express God's life to those around them, as 'living sacrifices' (Rom 12:1) Here is what he wrote:
1 Cor 7:20-24 Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. Were you a slave when you were called? Don't let it trouble you — although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord's freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ's slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to. NIV

The slave Onisemus was sent back to his owner as a slave.

I dont know in my case. I think God is calling me to be a comic strip artist. He has given me the gift and the ideas for some cool characters. It doesnt necessarily bring direct glory to him but i feel this is what he may have planned for me career wise but I might be wrong. The only thing I can do is pray and submit my work. I feel like hes telling me to, unless its just my gut moving from that burrito last night.

"Seek and you will find"...

"Waiting" is an active wait, not anything else. If you do not seek, you will not find... simple.

You could pray for some clarification. In God's word (the Bible) he spoke to his people through dreams, visions, signs and angelic visitation. Other than that, I imagine a strong pull on your conscience/heart could be a word from God. My only advice would be to pray for clarification.

You don't have to physically leave everything and everyone behind to follow Yahweh. If you were married, you wouldn't leave that relationship to follow Him.

Not sure how you can move away from your parents without a job unless money isn't an issue. If that's the case, great! If you believe that Yahweh is wanting to do something in particular, can you begin to learn about it or accomplish it via the internet? Is there a church, school, soup kitchen, nursing home, a park, etc close to you, where you could serve? We are all on a journey. Many of us want to get closer to Him, we are continuously growing in Him everyday and will always be learning of Him and ourselves. One way we do that is by reading His word because it offers us spiritual and practical advice.

How do you know?

1) what you are hearing must match the fruit of the SPIRIT. "Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness" as seen in Galatians 5.

2) There is also a 'compelling' side of it, a 'passion' that cannot be quenched.
