I was brought up Baptist. I had thought as a teenager that everyone outside the Baptist school of thought was going to hell... Especially Catholics and Pentecostals. I was taught and believed that speaking of tongues is of the devil...

And then I spent a summer here with my Grandmother in Virginia. Her neighbors were farmers so I fell in with them. As I would dwell with the people they would invite me to the Pentecostal Holiness church. As the summer came to the end I was at the alter after each service falling in with the people. At one particular revival one of the saints of the church came behind me praying for me. As he was praying warm tears were falling from his cheeks and hitting my shoulder. As a guy who didn't like to be touched this was profound. That evening I can only express the sensation using a few lines from John Bunyans Pilgrims Progress..

Now I saw in my dream, that the highway up which Christian was to go, was fenced on either side with a wall, and that wall was called Salvation. Isaiah 26:10. Up this way, therefore, did burdened Christian run, but not without great difficulty, because of the load on his back.

He ran thus till he came at a place somewhat ascending; and upon that place stood a cross, and a little below, in the bottom, a sepulchre. So I saw in my dream, that just as Christian came up with the cross, his burden loosed from off his shoulders, and fell from off his back, and began to tumble, and so continued to do till it came to the mouth of the sepulchre, where it fell in, and I saw it no more.

Then was Christian glad and lightsome, and said with a merry heart, “He hath given me rest by his sorrow, and life by his death.” Then he stood still a while, to look and wonder; for it was very surprising to him that the sight of the cross should thus ease him of his burden. He looked, therefore, and looked again, even till the springs that were in his head sent the waters down his cheeks. Zech 12:10. Now as he stood looking and weeping, behold, three Shining Ones came to him, and saluted him with, “Peace be to thee.” So the first said to him, “Thy sins be forgiven thee,” Mark 2:5; the second stripped him of his rags, and clothed him with change of raiment, Zech 3:4: the third also set a mark on his forehead, Eph 1:13, and gave him a roll with a seal upon it, which he bid him look on as he ran, and that he should give it in at the celestial gate: so they went their way. Then Christian gave three leaps for joy, and went on singing,

After that experience I lay down on my Grandmothers bed. My Grandmother was a very clean and decent woman and I could smell my clothesline fresh surroundings as well as hear the kady dids singing (this night it was as if they were praising the Lord) in the back drop with fire flies coming up our hill. Then for the first time in my life the Holy Spirit began to talk. When I went back to school that year people would want to sit next to me in church so 'a little of that' would rub off on them. I wish I could say that I kept that spiritual experience alive in my own personal life, but as Pentecostals are in and out of revival, have had my challenges.

So, I still delight in fundamentalism, but am Pentecostal as well. I find that the reason the devil hates tongues is because he can’t figure out what the people are praying.

" I find that the reason the devil hates tongues is because he can't figure out what the people are praying."

I think the reason he likes tongues is that the people can't figure out what they are praying.

The reason why most people haven't pressed on to the true Baptism in the Holy Ghost is because they have too many Uzziah's in them... They aren't dead yet!

Funny thing is that I am alive in Christ, according to Scripture anyway. Thankfully I can rely on that and not something incomprehensible.

it's like... How arrogant was that guy!

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. - Isaiah 6:1

It took him dieing before Isaiah saw the Lord in his glory. Seven steps to the true Baptism in the metaphor of the OT temple...

The outer gates - Justification
The alter - Salvation - The sinners prayer
The laver- Outward sanctification
The inner temple - Inward sanctification
- The Table of Shewbread - God's word
- The Candlestick - Spiritual E/c2 - spiritual fruit
- The alter of golden incense - Prayer and praise
The Holy of Holies - The place of the true baptism in the Holy Ghost

Uzziah made it as far as the alter of golden incense before he was turned away. The way to the Holy of Holies is like an eye of the needle. Uzziah must die before we can enter in!

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. - Matthew 19:24

How do you know Uzziah was dead when Isaiah saw what he saw?

Or we're just not easily deceived. When I was first saved, I went to a Pentecostal church for 4 years. Never spoke in tongues, never slain in the spirit, never none of that kooky stuff. It never sat right with me and I had enough discernment to know something just wasn't right. God eventually took me out of there.

Also, posting a Joel Osteen video? That explains alot.

Exactlty! Hence the current phenomenon and confusion. It is perverted and counterfeit.

Well I think everyone above is agreeing with you that there is counterfeit.

However it's in the bible, e.g Acts chapter 2 where all the believers spoke in tongues. So there is a real part too.

I agree with you.

No matter what beliefs one may have if you follow the written word of God then it would be a good reminder that no man knows the mind of Christ. Not one of us can pretend that we can assuredly state that God does not gift tongues to His people at His will. That the gift can be used according to the Spirit of God in whatever capacity, environment or purpose as He sees fit.

Just as others have pointed out. There are spirits not of God that attempt to disrupt the moving of God's Spirit BUT God's Spirit will always prevail. It is up to every believer to discern if the spirit is of God or not. Not every tongue is of God but not every tongue is false or not given by the Spirit of God either.

In my Baptism of the Holy Ghost I posted the following quote...

“Whenever the doctrine of the baptism in the Holy Ghost will only be known as the evidence of speaking in tongues, that work will be an open door for witches and spiritualist and free loveism. That work will suffer because all kinds of spirits can come in.” - William Seymour

I was a member of a pentecostal church for eight years. Yes, some stuff was not kosher. But as the saying goes, do not throw the baby out with the bath water!

God is much bigger than a hall full of misguided souls.

When looking at speaking in tongues in the bible I ask what the purpose of it was? At Pentecost 3,000 were saved after they heard Galileans extolling the wonders of God in their own languages. So the purpose was evangelism.

Is there still a need for evangelism today? Well that will answer the question if tongues have ceased or not.

There may be, in some far corner of the world, an occasional instance of tongues being a gift of the spirit, but I have been convicted with 100% certainty that nearly all the "tongues" one hears in so-called churches, and the writhing and spitting and the bodies hittin' the floor, is at best a combination of human folly, weakness, and hubris, and at worst is fundamentally evil. Satanic. This is not a gift of the Holy Spirit. This is evil and those who practice it are poor witnesses for Christ, turning away seekers with insane displays of foolish human-centric 'worship'. There. I said it. It needs to be said.

After looking at this video, I have but one question where was the interpreter. Apostale Paul tells us only one at a time speaking in Church and one to interpet what is being said so all may understand. God is not a God of confusion, there was no special Group that was given this power, except on the day of pentecost. and the 2nd chapter of acts explains the purpose. I fail to see that this type of communication with out a interpreter is not but some type of that is talk about in the bible all spirits are not of God. Be very careful who you are worshipping, and what spirits you are bringing up, the bible tells us to test? God is spirit Jesus christ is Spirit the Holy Ghost is a Spirit, Satan and Demons are spirits.

we do not fight flesh and Blood but spirits? The whole Armor of God? Why do we have to talk in tongues when God understands are language to begin with? Any time God wants to talk to anyone he is God, he can and does make us understand so why is this tongue talking necessary? when I pray to God i do not need an interpreter? all I need to do is call upon the name of the Lord, as it tells us in Romans Chapter ten. I will close with these thoughts, Why did God change the language of Man at the Tower of Babel? and do you think that you need to speak a different Language to speak to God?

This is about the size of it. I have had experiences with those of the Pentecostal persuasion, but I can distinguish the ones who are Spirit-filled from the ones claiming to be "Pentecostal" who are total kooks. Yes, there is a difference. And I believe that Spiritual gifts can be used today (in an orderly fashion as it is meant to be), and God can move through people genuinely today just as He did in the first couple of centuries. Yes, He can do it; don't underestimate the power of God. But it is truly unfortunate that there are a lot of people misusing these special gifts and doing a lot of oddball things, and it just makes all Pentecostals look bad. And those people, in my mind, are not what I would call true Pentecostals, even though they may think they are, and would actually borderline on being a cult. But it isn't just the Pentecostal realm that has off-the-wall sub-sects. This can be said of any denomination.

And I'm also sure that some (if not all) of us here have heard someone say at one time or another that one has to be speaking in tongues to be saved; this philosophy was brought about (for the most part) by a sect of Pentecostals called "Oneness"/"Jesus-Only", so this is not a universal thought among the entire realm of Pentecostals, as some people might think. I, too, have heard of that concept before, and no, I don't agree with it. However, I am open to the fact that God gives different gifts to different people as He wills (including Spiritual gifts), and speaks to every Christian as the unique individuals He had created us all to be. So Christians will have different ways they worship and different methods of ministry using the gifts God has given them. And God will never give people gifts that aren't suited to their personalities. That's why I believe that there will Christians from different denominations in Heaven, and the only thing that will matter at that time is that we will all see Jesus face to face, so we will be one big happy body of believers worshipping the King of Kings in harmony (despite the nearly-countless things we may disagree about with one another here on earth).

Let's face it... we'll be stuck with one another. :)
