Rev 11:19 says -And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Why was John shown the Ark of the Covenant in heaven? What purpose did this serve?

The temple represents the Church or God's People, and the Ark is possibly God's Presents, which has been kept off from view and kept in the Most Holy Place (2 Chron. 5:7)

To have the Ark reappear symbolizes the complete establishment of God's Kingdom. The relationship between God and God's servants will be fully realized.

Perhaps to show him what it looked like back when YHVH instructed the Hebrew Israelites to build it as shown in Exodus 25?
The words Ark and Sanctuary/Tabernacle are both mentioned in Reve 11:19.

Blue Letter Bible - Lexicon
Strong's Number H727 matches the Hebrew אָרוֹן ('arown), which occurs 202 times in 174 verses in the Hebrew concordance

Young) Exodus 25:8 `And they have made for Me a sanctuary, and I have tabernacled in their midst;
9 according to all that which I am shewing thee, the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all its vessels, even so ye do make [it].
10 `And they have made an ARK of [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]tim wood; two cubits and a half its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height;

I find it interesting that it is only mentioned 2 times in the NT/NC of the Bible :confused:

Blue Letter Bible - Lexicon
Strong's Number G2787 matches the Greek κιβωτός (kibōtos), which occurs 6 times in 6 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

Young) Hebrews 9:4 having a golden censer, and the Ark of the covenant overlaid all round about with gold, in which [is] the golden pot having the manna, and the rod of Aaron that budded, and the tables of the covenant,

Reve 11:19 And was opened the Sanctuary of the God in the heaven and was seen the Ark of the Covenant of Him in the Sanctuary of Him
and became lightnings and voices/sounds and thunders and quaking and great hail.

Interesting. How do you figure this?

It signifies that there is no longer glory of God on earth and/or that God is watching earth from heaven.

Perhaps that is the reason for

'and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm [Lit hail]'

and

'and in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; seven thousand people [Lit names of people, seven thousand] were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven'.

See 2 Chronicles 7:13-14. Even in these stages, it's still about repentance.

Sounds familiar but I couldn't say for sure since I can't recall a verse. Do you have one?
There are a few verses that I know of...but then I cheated by using a concordance :blush:

Strong's Concordance with Hebrew and Greek Lexicon

KJV) 2 Chronicles 6:41 Now therefore arise, O LORD God, into thy resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and let thy saints rejoice in goodness.

KJV) Psalms 132:8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

Ok, but I was hoping for a more in depth explanation. John is seeing a vision in heaven. How does the temple in heaven represent the church and more so, why did John see the ark of His covenant?
The word used for Temple in the NT is never used once in the jewish/hebrew book of Revelation. Just thought I would mention that. The Sanctuary/most holy place was of course located in the Temple compound :)

Reve 11:19 And was opened the Sanctuary of the God the in the heaven and was seen the Ark of the Covenant of Him in the Sanctuary of Him
and became lightnings and voices/sounds and thunders and quaking and great hail.

Reve 15:8 And is being-filled-full/repleted the Sanctuary of smoke out of the glory of the God, and out of the power of Him.
And no one was able to be entering into the Sanctuary until should be being finished the seven blows/stripes of the seven messengers.

It was to show all of us that it is still relevant.
