Hi, I was baptised in the Holy Spirit back in September and was able to speak in tongues straight after - I use this for personal edification.

However, of late, I feel that I need to be refilled but really don't know how to do it - sorry to seem daft but if you don't ask you don't find out do you. I know you should do this regularly. I want to move closer, and to give myself over to God and live for him, not for my own selfish means and I want to grow spiritually and let the love of God shine out from me. Not asking too much am I? :)

Can anyone offer any advice as to what I should pray for please?

Charles Finney was a man that God used in upstate new york area in the 1800's . He had revivals where the Spirit moved in such a great way that when he entered a town , they sometimes had to shut down the factories because workers would fall out under the power because Finney had walked by outside of the factory on the street.

I mention him because revival followed him for decades. I think it was fifty years.

One of the things he said was that when he felt the Holy Spirit starting to diminish in him , he would go on a three day fast and get alone with God to recharge.

I have read a few hundred books on revival over the years and they all have in common that they believed in fasting.

It is not the only key and there is a lot that can be said about it. But the short answer to your question is this.

Do some fasting.

"refilling of the Holy Spirit?" I think we are only filled once. All of us at one time or another may not "feel" as close to God but when this happens; we just need to get in His word and read, read, read. I find that this helps me to close the "feeling" of distance.

Being filled with the Spirit is not a "feeling" and we can't rely on feelings. When we are born again and filled with the Spirit; God has placed his seed in us via the Holy Spirit and it remains forever because we are born of God. (1 John 3:9)

Yitzchak and Singpeace, thank you very much; I agree with fasting but am unable to do it as I have a medical condition which means I have to eat regularly - I think there are other things I can fast from (such as not using the computer apart from work; not watching TV) or am I incorrect in this? I have been praying a lot lately too and will keep on doing so.

Patience7, I understand about feelings; I've always put way too much emphasis on this but am trying to move on in faith, and not rely on feelings. I understand that you can be refilled time after time and it is good to do so; it's not just a one-off event but I could be wrong.

There is no need to be re-filled because the Holy Spirit doesn't leak out of us. Fasting sounds great to the flesh but honestly its you trying to do something in the flesh to "twist" God's arm and get Him to do something for you. I am basing my statment on the bible. It says we live by faith not by fasting. Faith is confessing what you believe only...or I should say what is written until you fully believe it.

So then what to do? Start believing and confessing that Jesus is so close to you, He loves you so much and just begin to receive and be conscious of His love for you. There is nothing you can do for Him to love you more. Start listening to anointed messages that preach the grace of God. Start relaxing, Jesus did all the work for you on the cross but that doesn't mean you have to start working after your salvation. Depend on His finished work and unmerited favor toward you. The bible says when you don't know what to pray ask the Holy Spirit to interceed for you and begin praying in the Holy Spirit. Just start thanking Him for everything and praising Him for anything. Do it out of the knowledge of His love for you and not out of something you feel you have to do.

There are a few great books to read by Joseph Prince called Destined to Reign and the other is Unmerited Favor. These are great books and you can listen to his messages online.

These feelings are normal for most all christians even for pastors so don't think you are the only one going through this. People who say otherwise are either lying or dead. Religion will tell you these feelings are bad and you are away from God but truth be told they have no idea and are putting on a "holy" act.
Satan has the ability to give you these thoughts in your mind, this is his job so don't get upset or think God is mad at you or you are losing it.... just relax listen to a message about how much God loves you or start thanking Jesus for being with you right then and that He will never leave you....never feel condemned for anything, always confess your righteousness of God in Christ!

You are God's beloved.

There are differences such as The Holy Spirit lives within us yet we want His presence in our worship. Sometimes your prayer language changes. Refilling is used for lack of a better term. Peter and John were filled on the day of Pentecost and in Acts 4:31"And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness."

Sowing n reaping, being faithful over a few things - when pastors preach about grace, the congregation thinks more about grace for example. Start off with a small congregation, then it grows. During those times when we're wanting more, then speak what you've been already been given more often. Pursuing Him

The Bible refers to fasting as abstaining from food. Some have given a partial fast the name " Daniel fast " because he fasted from only certain foods. it is recorded in the book of Daniel and God blessed Daniel's fasting.
By doing a partial fast , he was still able to still eat during his fasting.

I prefer to stay as biblical as possible because then I have scripture to place my faith in. Obviously things like t.v. were not around at the time of the Bible and fasting in the Bible always refered to food.

But it is also true that we follow the spirit of things and not the letter of the law. We can make new applications of Bible truths and be blessed in that , as well. I have heard many wonderful testimonies from people who fasted from things like T.V.

If you are asking me my feeling about it. I would advise you to look into what kind of partial fast you could do.

Another thing that I have heard of is people who are able to fast doing fasting for someone else who could not fast for themselves. My wife and I have done that before.

With regard to praying , here is what I do sometimes when I am not sure when to begin. It sometimes takes me all week to work it through.

I start with thanking God for what he has already done. I usually put on some worship music and get into an attitude of prayer and worship. Then I take my time , maybe a few hours and in that atmosphere of worship I make a written list of things that I am thankful for. I just brainstorm and pray over each one a little bit. I sometimes take several breaks and come back to this several times until I feel done and ready to move on to the next thing. I also work some scripture that relates into my praying. this is easy to do using a Bible concordance. Just look up the word thankfulness or thanks and any related words that you can think of and it will generate several passages which deal with being thankful.

One reason I make list is that I sometimes like to go back later and look at my prayer lists. During the thankfulness time , I speak from the heart.

I might say something like this. "Lord , remember that time when we were really short on money and my wife and I prayed really hard for you to help us and then we found 20 dollars on the ground while walking to work." or " Lord , remember back when I was single and I was kind of lonely and I wanted to find a good wife really badly and then you worked it all out ......." or " Lord , remember how nervous I was when I was engaged and I was afraid that I would not be able to measure up as a husband. I didn't have an earthly Father to go to for advice and I came to you Lord. And you showed me this and this and then you sent my friend ,Todd into my life who was full of wisdom and helped me out with some of the stuff a dad would help a son out with. .."

It is a time of encouraging myself to remember what God has done and also a time to pour out my heart and thank him.

Then I move on to dealing with repentance , I hit the obvious categories like dealing with forgiveness , bad habits , a hard heart , Pride , unbelief , worry , etc. of course I ask God to show me things. i don't just rattle things off like a list. I take my time with worship music on and in an attitude of prayer and pray over each thing that comes to mind until I feel it has been dealt with. Sometimes I come back to one several times.

Again there are scriptures that go with it. If I get stuck , there are some scriptures that can help with getting unstuck. Like praying through the Ten Commandments from Exodus chapter 20.

Just like the thankfulness time , I pray from the heart and don't just rattle off a list.

When I feel done with that , I move on to talking to God about his relationship with me. This is more of an intimate time. I speak form the heart and just tell God how I feel about Him and the difference He has made in my life. There is no formula prayer. I tell him the things I would like to do for Him and how I see him. It is just from the heart.

After I have worked out all that stuff and connected with God , then I begin to bring my requests. I usually start with requests to know Him better. something like " God please show me your goodness. I have seen what I think goodness is , but what does your goodness look like ? What does it feel like ? can you tell me a story about it or give me some examples so that I can understand ? or " Lord show me your anger , your love , your patience ,"
or " God can you talk to me about what it means that you are my father "
I ask him " what about this situation at work or this thread on the message board, God. What do you think about it ? " or I might ask " God , you know how I get angry and frustrated about this thing ? Why does it bother me so much and what do you think about how I'm acting about it? " God's answers often surprise me. He is so blunt and honest about things. sometimes he gives me answers that most people would never give me. Like I will ask him about something and he will answer me none of my business.

You get the idea. I call that just spending time with God. That is the context that I ask him for things like revival and more of His Holy Spirit.

I can tell you this from experience. Every time that I have asked God for more of His Holy Spirit , his answer has been the same answer. He always talks to me about my faith and about the condition of my heart. Always.

Thank you so much everyone who has replied to my message; I've got a whole lot to think about!

Yitzchak, Wow, fantastic messages - I'm certainly going to give your prayer list a go; my husband is away in the USA for 2 weeks from next week so I'll have the evenings to myself; perfect time to sit and do this! I'm also going to look into a partial fast, probably from TV which is just a distraction.

Tturt, we're doing Acts in our Fellowship Group at the moment and I found out next week we'll be doing about being 'refilled' in the Chapter you mention. I try to use my prayer language each day; I like to pray in tongues whilst reading the Bible at the same time and I do find it seems to help my understanding. I also pray what I can in English and then ask the Holy Spirit to help me; I picture who I am praying for and the Holy Spirit helps me. I believe what I am saying is from the Spirit and going straight to God, even though the evil one tries to tell me otherwise (he would wouldn't he - we're more powerful when we pray in the Spirit).

Ai3theanswer, I genuinely want to draw closer to God, I don't feel I want to 'twist his arm', I just want to have some time where I am away from distractions (hence thinking about my partial fast). I'm going to check out those messages I can find online. You're right, the key is to relax and KNOW how much I am loved. I am His Beloved - how fantastic to be reminded of; thank you so much!

Looks like I've got a lot of researching to do doesn't it!!! Thanks everyone :)

I believe when we live the crucified life we are on auto.

We stay filled.

We deny self and walk in the Spirit.

Jesus connected prayer and fasting to "releasing" what we have inside of us to get the job done.

It must be so, otherwise he wouldn't have said it.

Smiler, I fast at the beginning of every year for 21 days. I eat, but, I forgo all of my favorite foods, sweets, meats(except sea food) and bread. It is surprising how much food is left that I can eat on a regular basis. So, If you want to food fast just leave off something that you love to eat. It works for me.

Sorry, being a bit of a numpty here but want to be sure I'm understanding what you're saying - do you mean 'releasing' as in releasing the Holy Spirit inside of us? I'm a bit tired at the moment ..... can you tell ;)!

Thank you :)

John 7:38 “He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

we know that nothing fills that thirst but Him.

Joyce Meyer (hopefully this won't be discarded by posting who said it) said this week, she spends 2 hours or so every morning Bible reading, etc.so she can get ready for the day. She realizes that's the only way that she is presentable - relying on Him.

So engaging ourselves in Bible reading is one way we "refill" our spirits (or whatever term is acceptable to use).

Flowing requires both - "refilling" constantly to be ever "releasing" - doesn't it?[FONT=&quot]

Yes. They say that those who are successful in ministry spend a lot of time with God. Prayer , bible study , worship .

Remember that the Holy Spirit is a person. As others said above, once God's spirit dwells within you, it is there. But God will show you different facets of Himself all the time.

One important teaching in the Bible, is faith. Faith in what God has spoken and promised, even when things look bleak. We nod our heads and reassure God that we will be strong in trials, but I think most Christians go through this training time, where they learn it is not their own strength that gets them through.

If we decide to lean on God during those times, then we need to learn how to use this concept the way He taught it. Not to lean on our own understanding, our guilt-driven strivings, our own stamina or passion.

Faith in the unseen. Standing on God's word when circumstances look like you will never get out of it.

Look at some of the Psalms, where David was driven from his homeland and chased through the mountainsides by an eccentric and jealous king. Nothing looked hopeful.

But David chose to write, "You are my hiding place," "though he stumble, he will not fall," "those who sow in tears reap with songs of joy," "even when sleeping among campfires, the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver."

Christianity can so easily become something we agree with and support with all our energies... but also something we forget how to do.

Leaning on His everlasting arms.
