hi cyberlizard - All seers are prophets but not all prophets are seers. Prophets hear then speak while seers prophecies' include what they see.
With all Godly spiritual gifts, it originates from Yahweh. We all know the enemy has counterfeits, thus psychic abilities.
People are naturally drawn to the spiritual. According to Scripture, as believers we're not to involve ourselves with fortune tellers, etc. (Deut 18). An example of this is from Acts 16, the slave girl who was a fortune teller stated accurate information in this case. v 17 "...These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." But it was the evil spirits in her that were taunting at Paul so that's why Paul cast them out. But he didn't do it until Yahweh let him know to do it.
Many believe they have discerning of spirits. This type of knowledge has to come directly from Yahweh; otherwise, it's our discernment - not that we don't need it. But we definitely need to be lead by Yahweh instead.
The judgmental prophet from the OT is not for today. I Corinthians 14:1-3 prophecy is for exhortation, edification, and comfort. Exhort can mean to give warnings or advice, or make urgent appeals. As in Acts 11:28-30 a famine is prophesied and they're able to prepare for it. BUT now all prophetic words are done in love - Christian love is most important.
Those who operate in Godly spiritual gifts are often criticized even by those in the church. The enemy doesn't know our hearts nor the future only Yahweh. Personal prophecies were given in the NT. One example is Timothy who was told to make good warfare concerning the words he had received. Then of course there are prophecies that are for the church (meaning the numerous congregations), nations as well.
