There are several threads on this rather contentious issue already on TCL. Use the search function to find them. Another option would be to go to the LCMS and ELCA websites and look there. It's pretty easy to find the appropriate information.

Alternatively, you could Google: "differences between LCMS and ELCA"

no need to apologize, Nemo. Tangible wasn't trying to be rude or anything. We just get this question A LOT around here! :D

THIS THREAD is probably one of the better ones and a bit more specific to your question, but there's lots out there that just talk about the different synods in general too.

Welcome to TLC!

Inappropriate topic since there is much contention on this subject.

There are a great number of differences between LCMS and ELCA. There's nothing inappropriate about discussing them. If people could just be adults about it there wouldn't have to be contention in the discussion.

how much time have you got?

I would say the biggest are in regards to:
social/moral issues such as homosexuality most recently

communion practices (who partakes, ecumenism)

ordination (women, homosexuals)

hermeneutics

stressing individual vs. communal ethics

Interpretation of the Lutheran Confessions.

That is the reader's digest version.

Like I said a totally inappropriate subject since it will cause dissention. We're had enough confrontations on the difference between the 2 synods. Since you are a mod you will get to deal with it later.

For someone who is not Lutheran and who has probably heard or read things about there being different synods, it is a very appropriate question. I know, we, as Lutherans get tired of the discussion, yet it is something we have to teach our brothers and sisters of other denominations about.

Nemo, are you interested in visiting/joining a church of one of those Lutheran synods?

Welcome to TCL!

Kind of, yes. I am going to my father's Methodist church now, and then I learned that Methodist churches don't confirm adults....

That seems odd, I'm pretty sure my niece was confirmed in the United Methodist Church as an adult.

Okay, I see where they are coming from. Instead of it being an adult confirmation class, they have what is called a reaffirmation of faith. One needs to be baptized to do that.

We Lutherans usually have an adult take an adult confirmation class and be confirmed.

We do have a service where an adult can be baptized and confirmed at the same time, after one has taken the adult confirmation class. Or, they can be baptized, take the class and then be confirmed.

For adults, baptism IS their confirmation. Remember, confirmation is the Rite where one personally makes their confession of faith that was made in their stead when baptized as an infant/child. When an adult is baptized, they can then also receive the Lord's Supper.

Oops, you are right, guess my memory is failing, it has been awhile since we had an adult baptism.

really?? cos i was baptized (as an adult) and still had to take the adult confirmation classes before i was able to partake in the Lord's Supper....maybe it differs from pastor to pastor?

That's odd. Did you take any instruction before you were baptized?
