Hi! :)

We Baha'is also have a fast, but since we're on a solar calendar ours doesn't rotate through the year like the Muslim Fast, but is always during our 19th (last) month of the year, from March 2 to 20. Because of this, our Fast never happens during extremes of weather like great heat or cold.

It's similiar to the Muslim Fast in that we don't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset each of these days. (Smoking is also prohibited, though there are also a few differences from the Muslim Fast.)

And our Fast is immediately followed by our New Year and its celebrations.

Indeed, the purpose of our Fast is both to reflect on what's important in life and to prepare for the new year!

Best regards, :)

Bruce

I am Pentecostal Christian. I have been fasting the last 2 years in January for 21 days. This fast is typically a Daniel fast.

I also typically do some type of fasting throughout the year when I am in need of an answer to prayer. Its not always food either, it can be things such as tv, internet, etc. Whatever things I enjoy that I give up to increase my relationship with God.

Ramadan has been happening for about two weeks now, so I thought I'd ask a little question to everyone: does anyone else here fast for their particular faith? If so, what type of fast and for how long.

Wasalaam

As Bruce mentioned above we Baha'is fast for nineteen days from sunrise to sunset..abstaining from liquid and solid foods during that time. It is during our month of 'Ala (Loftiness) the last month of the Baha'i year followed by Naw-Ruz.

Fasting begins for Baha'is on their fifteenth birthday... It is not obligatory to fast after seventy years of age. If you are ill or travelling long distances fasting is not obligatory. We do not need to make up for days not fasted.

The Baha'i Fast

Fasting is seen as a spiritual obligation and there are special prayers for the occasion.

I thought it might be interesting for some to see a bit of the taraweeh prayers from Makkah this year. These are optional prayers that can be prayed in congregation every night in Ramadan (not just in Makkah).

Alhamdulillah and thank you. BTW, I was taught Taraweeh was obligatory.

How could that be? Five obligatory prayers..no other. :) What was the evidence of the one/s who taught you Taraweeh was obligatory?

The Hanafis believe Witr is Wajib (but not Fard)..(my understanding of their stance in it is that leaving it is blameworthy but not sinful).. but I don't believe that's the case anyway.

Also, night prayers (in general), used to be obligatory in very early Islam, but then the obligation was removed and it became recommended.

Ramadan.... is that the time of year when Muslims turn night into day? they sleep all day and are awake all night, a friend working in Saudi told me that a lot of the shops were closed all day and reopened about 6 in the evening until early the next morning, not all of them I might add.

It's a full on fast, but I'm not sure about swapping night and day. ;)

Well you are only supposed to fast during the day so if you sleep all day and eat at night Ramadan will pass without any problem, in fact it would seem for a not so devout Muslim it's the only way to go, leave the suffering to the devout Muslims.

Sleep Ramadan away.

Nah. We are still required to complete our 5 obligatory prayers, most of which are during the day. Sleeping through Ramadan is frowned upon as the time of fast should be focused not on hunger or thirst, but on reflection upon Allah SWT and how we can live our lives better.

Well,
We are the Orthodox Copts in Egypt and many Arab countries fast two third of the year, Also does the Christians Orthodox Syrians our brothers,
We eat no meat or any animal products and every one fast without food or drink for a time, determined differently by the confessor father.

We have just ended Our Lady Virgin Mary fast, and this year Ramadan comes in the same days of her Holy fast and so Egyptians fasted in the same times for almost two weaks.
because of her great holiness few Muslims fast it with us also because she makes miracles and appears to every one regardless what his or her religion is.

And this fast occasion that she had rested in the Lord (died) and went to her son Jesus the Christ in those days about 2000 years ago.
