I'm confused about Jesus raising people from the dead and them going to heaven. When Jesus died did he just sleep like we will be doing?

Perhaps we can ask Him that one day. Until then, the topic of soul sleep leads to lots of conjecture.

Welcome Betsy!

I'm not clear about where you're confused! :) Could you tell us some more about what you were reading or listening to that confused you? What sparked your question?

I don't yet see the relationship between "what Jesus did when he died" and Jesus raising other people. Could you help me with that?

I think He was in abraham's bosom preaching to those in prison. Got a lot of sighed reliefs that the old covenant was replaced with the new. Went to hell to show the devil who was, is, and will be in command. Got the keys to hell and death, declared the sting of death swallowed up in victory. Pondered about going back to see His disciples and get them ready to be filled with the Holy Ghost, fiyah, and power, so that they could be the apostles and start the long string of making a spectacle out of the devil and trample upon serpents and scorpions and all the works of the enemy. Hallelujah, what a beautiful and glorious plan.

Thank you, Jesus.:holy:

He did nothing because He was dead. There are is no knowledge, love or praise in the grave, only silence.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.

ummm really? Jesus, who is God.. God who is immortal, cannot die nor be killed, yet you suggest that he was dead? How about we don't know because we don't have enough info.... If Jesus whom most believe was God, then he could not have been "dead."

One subtext is that entertaining Jesus not "sleeping at death" can lead down the slippery slope of humans not sleeping at death. Oh the horrors. This is an SDA prized possession. We insist that Grandpa is not looking down on us and scowling because we are drinking martinis and dancing at the nightclub (I wanted to get three no-nos in one outing.)

If you look at much of Christianity, and Adventism specifically, there is a consistent symbolism around helplessness and deferral of action/accountability because it's "out of our hands."

Good, why don't you pretend to be dead. You do not grasp the notion of what Jesus did in those three days when His body was not found in the tomb. Do you understand that you misused a scripture for our Lord Jesus Christ, claiming that He has no more reward, the memory is Him is forgotten. Even at the time He was in the tomb many were thinking of Him. Pharisees were plotting behind the scenes and Jesus' followers were anticipating His return. Your problem it seems at this point is that you do not see Jesus as the very special God that He is. But, He will open your understanding of scriptures. I know that you think you know, but be realistic.

Bless you brothah, your friendly neighborhood, born-again, child of the Most High God.

No joke, foolish looking greek guy. You do not full me with your facade of intelligence and rectitude.
I don't have a facade of intelligence because intelligence is not an individual trait. It is the species that is intelligent. I have no idea what you mean by rectitude.

Everyone has innate intelligence. Practice refines. As for species, I suppose you are talking about homosapiens. Rectitude is moral fiber. When we stand upon the rock, we are strong, and when anything comes against it, faith will stand any pressure.

What do you doubt? Did not Jesus preach to those that came before, bound in prison waiting to be rescued. Many before wished to see our time of salvation.

Even if we make our bed in hell, He is there. I do not think anything is out of our hands, but the Spirit, not our own works is what changes us. The letter of the law kills, but the Spirit gives life (quickens) But, God gives us the command to choose life and not death, blessing and not a cursing. We are told to obey and these blessings will come upon us. We are warned that if we do not harken to the voice of God, then the curses will come upon us. Obedience is golden.

It could be that He was dead for a time. If He did not die for our sins, we are still in sin, so your right. I concede, He was dead for a time, but I guess I was focusing upon life and not death. But, we must present our bodies a living sacrifice to God, which is our reasonable service. We must play dead, to take up His life. Brother, you still need to be born-again to see the kingdom of God. The temple of the Lord is not built by hands, is not temporal. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. His kingdom are those who are born-again, not a building with rules and regulations. The letter of the law kills, but the Spirit gives life.

This statement conflates two issues.

Kenblaster hasn't argued that Jesus wasn't dead; in fact, based on what he has said so far, I'm confident he would agree that Jesus "died for our sins."

Ken has argued something different -- that in death, Jesus wasn't unconscious or inactive. You may disagree with that, but he has not argued that Jesus did not die.

Actually, it is a very good question. People are trying to understand Jesus death, burial, and resurrection.

I want to give this and let it be taken directly as if Jesus Christ would be speaking in to you:

Luke 24:45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

Yes -- that's one part of the OP's topic, and since many things are being said, it's also important to clarify what is not being said.

Doesn't matter how many passages someone marshals if they're not addressing the subject at hand, or are challenging an argument with someone who has not made it.
