I ran across this awesome site a few months ago. It lists famous Seventh Day Adventists who are a part of the church, who grew up then left the church, or who converted to SDA. It also lists a few people who had or have connections with the church. Music wise, I found it incredible that Jaci Velasquez is a Seventh Day Adventist! My favorite though (which a lot of you know): Jerome Fontamillas of the Christian rock band, Switchfoot is a Seventh Day Adventist!!!! That totally rocks! Some of the other facts are fun to know, like Kirk Franklin used to do the music for a Seventh Day Adventist church along with a Baptist church, but at the SDA church he was able to do even more contemporary sounding music, cause the Adventists liked really contemporary music more than the Baptist church (now that’s not our common stereo type!). Also check out that Paul Harvey is now a SDA (since the past few years), Prince used to be an Adventist, but is now a Jehovah’s Witness, and a few other interesting things you might already know. Just kind of interesting:

Thanks for that info, it really is interesting.

I will use some of that next time I take the Sabbath School program.

Great idea, I haven't thought of using it in sabbath school (i am a sabbath school superintendent)! But I have been trying to do a series based partially from ideas i got from the Jesus Freaks books... a series on persecuted areas.

Did you read what they wrote on that website about why SDA's are mentioned so rarely in Sci Fi literature?

"Another factor is the fact that the Seventh-day Adventist Church has become increasingly similar to other conservative Protestant churches. Authors are more likely to write about religious or cultural groups to the extent which those groups seem distinctive. SDAs are distinctive in many ways (such as by observing the Sabbath on Saturday) and retain a high level of group identification, but they have de-emphasized differences in positioning the church as Evangelical."

It may just have more to do with numbers. There are larger apocalyptic groups than SDA's which would increase their chances of being written about in a piece of Sci Fi literature. (Of course, it's usually easier to just make up a group!)

For instance, currently in the US and Canada, there are approx. 336,000,000 citizens, but SDA's only make up about 0.24 percent (less than 1/4 of 1%) of the population for both countries respectively (North America).

On a world scale, using the highest estimates as possible (which includes the many with names still on books that do not attend an SDA church) it's about the same at about 1/4 of 1%, or 0.23 percent of the total world population.

Just some perspective.:)

Just some perspective.:)

I think you screwed up the math, it should be 0.24 and 0.21 percent respectively. Glad I didn't go to an adventist school. ;)

yes, but 1% = 1 percent. 1/4 of 1 % = 0.25 percent, not 0.0025 percent.
Yes, I see the error of my ways. I was hoping you wouldn't see that and copy it into another post, but I see I'm too late.

1/4 of 1% = .0025 (but not .0025 %)

Got it! Good thing I still owe $40,000 on my student loans from Adventist schools. (And good thing I didn't major in math! Obviously pastors aren't good at math usually. We can look over a crowd of 100 and say 'there must be close to 175 people in here!)

You'd better hope Jesus will come back soon. I owe less than $20k on my student loan. Almost 10 years, I still haven't put a real dent into it.

I owe 70k. After undergrad I only owned 25k, but I have been irresponsible in graduate school... although I am trying to be better now. It's actually a consideration about what jobs I take, I am less likely to take a low paying teaching position (at a community college or something) or research position and more likely to take ahigh paying industrial position.

I really question the validity of some of those... If you read the documentation you will realize that they are/were not necessarily adventist but have had some kind of connection with the church. Kirk Franklin being one...

Malcom X... Come on....They don't even provide any kind of documentation to support this.

Part of the point was to note famous people who are either adventist or have had adventist connections. The website tries to point this out.

I made this thread like months ago, funny it came back, oh and on the topic of student loans and math... :D!
