My Wife’s Baptist Minister preached a sermon that if do not attend church whenever the assembly gathers you are committing mortal sin against God. That the founders’ decided when this church would be open for worship and these are the days that you should attend.

Here is the scriptural support he based his sermon on, do these verses support his claim?
Or are there other scriptures that support this better?

Hebrews 10: 24-27
24 We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works.
25 We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another and this all the more as you see the day drawing near.
26 If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins
27 but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries

Well people have always tried to put rules on other people and use the scripture to do so.. We are not to forsake the assembling ourselves together. Now no where is it stated that we must all go the assembly every week at this hour or not or this is sin. :)

What would you say if a person decides not to go to church on Sunday because he or she wants to go fishing or shopping, would it be a sin then if you gave into self love instead of spending time with your assembly worshipping God.

I wouldn't say that it is a sin. In fact, other than beong told to not foresake the assembly the NT is pretty silent on the how's and when's etc of how we are to do that. We have a great deal of freedom and that includes being able to "have church" whenever and wherever. Remember the NT church was meeting in peoples homes, they got together a lot more than us for teaching, worhsip, and the breaking of bread together. It was far less formal (read religious) and far more family/relationship in nature...both with Him and with other believers.

We regulalrly camp ands hunt etc on weekends. We "have church" wherever we are because we are the church. It is usually a great time of fellowship and is also an opportunity for outreach.

Of course, this seems to be another area where we differ from our RCC and O brothers and sisters, as we take to heart that we are all priests (royal priesthood) and I can baptise whoever and administer communion and we don't see the need (or biblical basis) for the priesthood that ya'll do, altho we do have local leaders.

It's basically the stereotypical Baptist hell fire and brimstone preaching. I wouldn't take it too seriously. You can twist scripture to support just about anything. That's why I read my Bible and form my own opinions on what I read. And the universal truth is that we aren't worthy of God, but through his grace, he sent his son to die for our sins so that one day we may join him in his perfect kingdom of heaven. I think every Christian can agree on this and we need to learn to put our differences aside.

Now why would that be a sin? You can be praising God while fishing.. You can be praying as you shop. Now we are instructed not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together.. Now to forsake it means that you never assemble with other believers..

I didn't think Hebrews stated that we should be at the Church whenever the doors are open, but do feel that if I sleep in on Sunday or stay home to watch the game I am sinning against God who has Blessed this sinner each an everyday. I guess it's a Catholic guilt thing.

As do I, my family will do the same thing. Where ever two or more are present Jesus is present.

Your right there is a difference on how RCC views the priesthood. We to believe that we are all priest and can administer communion. We just believe that there are hierarchal levels of the priesthood on up to our High Priest in Heaven Jesus Christ.

Hap, you are of course free to worship as you wish and I think you may be right it is a Catholic thing (re: the guilt) but it's also a legalist thing, and that is not limited ot just the RC denomination.

This isn't the thread for the priest discussion, LOL and I'm sure you are aware of my opinion on the matter anyways.

God bless
Jay

I'm one that believes whenever believers come together in fellowship and praise Christ, we are in "church". Day and time don't matter.

IMO, a lot of Sunday morning services, across the spectrum of the Christian faith, are becoming little more than exercises in bible study with a few songs thrown in. That's not what I'm looking for.

Also, at a church I used to go to, I heard an elder say that the preacher exhorted the congregation to come in as faithfully as they could, because on top of tithes, they also paid money in each time they came to church, and the little 5-10 dollar "offerings" added up.

Sounds alot like the position of a non-denom preacher at the church we left. He stated that if you were not in church everytime the doors were open then you had "a callous on yer heart" and "until you rip that sucker off you will never be saved". Sorry but going to 2 Sunday morning services, plus Sunday School plus Sunday evening plus Wednesday evening plus any other time the guy felt like having an extra service seems a bit excessive. I was brought up in an area that didn't have Sunday evening services or a midweek service (except during Holy Week) and never felt right about going. It was a foreign concept to me.

Side note-- a short time after we left this particular church we found out that in this area Sunday night and Wednesday night services (which are now common) are a result of an invention that most areas can't live without. The streetlight. Seems some churches felt the best way to combat youths hanging out on the streets after dark was to get them into church a couple of extra hours a week.

Since when did Baptist start believing in mortal sin? Kinda flys in the face of OSAS...
That was my thought - a sin, perhaps, but not a mortal sin. We are to love the Lord our God with all our hearts - that means that He should come first - before fishing!

My thought is that if you are a member of a church and don't want to go whenever the doors are open, it might be time to change churches! :)

My thought is why is this pastor worshiping the church service?

We should be "having church" wherever we are since we are to be in a constant state of prayer/worship.

I don't need to go to a special building and the events certainly don't need to be sanctioned by my local fellowship....get out there and love God and love people every day and all day.

I did that while I was in a seminary.
You will indeed make a fine pope someday.
