Quench not the Spirit

Quench not the Spirit.

Quench Not The Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 KJV Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit.

In this Scripture we are given instructions. I want to focus on the last part. Quench not the spirit.

Quench here means. PUT OUT, EXTINGUISH to put out the light or fire.

Have you ever felt the feeling that you need to witness to somebody. Or the feeling to help somebody. Maybe even just to tell somebody to have a blessed day. If you are Christian I know you have. But how many times do you actually follow through.

See too many times we quench the spirit by not doing what is telling us to do. We are supposed to walk in the spirit. To let the spirit guide us and direct us. But when we refuse to listen we are quenching the spirit. We're putting out God's light and fire he has giving us. we're supposed to be the light to the world. we can't do that if we're quenching God's light.

Some might put it out right when they get saved.
Instead of being like the lady at the well that went and told everybody.

See God didn't give us a spirit of fear. We shouldn't be scared to tell people about God. We shouldn't be ashamed to tell people about God.

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

But what happens when we keep quenching the spirit. You no longer hunger for the things of God. You locked the spirit up in a little room inside you. Take physical hunger for an example. Someone that is use to eating 5000 calories a day ( athletes and etc...) will be very hungry if they only had 2500 calories. Someone that goes to church every service will hunger to hear the word if they miss a service. Don't quench the spirit, go to church and read the Bible. Build up your appetite.

Matthew 5:6 KJV
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Now let's say we have a quenched spirit. We didn't witness to the person the spirit was telling to. Then we do something that is a sin against God. What happens then?
We grieve the spirit.

Ephesians 4:30 KJV
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

What can grieve the spirit? Let's take a look at just a few things.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 KJV
Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Ephesians 4:29-32 KJV
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Hebrews 10:25 KJV
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

It's important you read that list of scriptures. I believe there are sins in there that we may do daily. Now if we quench and grieve the spirit daily what is the most likely outcome? Walking in the flesh or walking in the spirit?
How important is it to listen to the spirit? Very.
This is a daily battle.

Galatians 5:16-17 KJV
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

What should we see if we don't quench or grieve the spirit. If we let the the spirit work.

Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Now if you wanna be more like Christ Let the spirit of God work through you. It's a daily battle it's not easy. You may lose friends, or should I say those you thought was friends.
But I would rather do the following.

Hebrews 11:25 KJV
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

If you wanna be the light on the hill don't quench or grieve God's spirit.

If you're lost and reading this do you feel that emptiness, something missing, it's your relationship with God. Trust Christ as your savior don't wait another day.
