Praise to God in His Holiness and Majesty
Psalm 29
The Voice of the LORD in the Storm.
A Psalm of David.
1 Ascribe to the LORD, O sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name;
Worship the LORD in holy array.
3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters;
The God of glory thunders,
The LORD is over many waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful,
The voice of the LORD is majestic.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
And Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the LORD hews out flames of fire.
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
The LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD makes the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everything says, “Glory!”
10 The LORD sat as King at the flood;
Yes, the LORD sits as King forever.
11 The LORD will give strength to His people;
The LORD will bless His people with peace.
Psalm 29 is a psalm of worship and praise with great emphasis on the name Jehovah (LORD) used 18 times in 11 verses. The word "glory" is used four times (1-3,9). The phrase "The voice of the Lord" occurs seven times (3-9).
This psalm has three parts:
1) Praise before the storm
A call to the angels to ascribe praise to God (1-2). This is a good example of "climatic parallelism", the second line completes the first.
2) Power in the storm
A proclamation of the power and mightiness of 'The Voice of the Lord' (3-9). Even the angels shout, "Glory!" as they watch the storm!
3) Peace after the storm
A blessing from God, who is enthroned as King on high, to His people (10-11)
Father, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all. Hallelujah! Amen.
