Body Hair

Isn't it curious that our current culture downright abhors body hair in every way, shape or form? This phenomenon has progressed to the point where even men who do not care too much about their appearance otherwise go to great lengths in order to make sure that every trace of hirsuteness is removed.
But why? Why do people feel that every hair that grows in a place other than the top of your head is icky? Or, conversely, why don't they feel appalled by ALL hair, and shave their head along with all the rest?
My hypothesis? It's because people want to appear as young as possible, subconsciously desiring to regress to a pre-pubescent state of eternal youth. In the past, it was mostly women who removed their pubic hair (as the cult of virginity blossomed in most patriarchal cultures around the globe, and prospective husbands desired their future wives to be "innocent" in every way), but now, the reasons behind this particular aesthetics have subtly changed.
I think our whole culture is infused with a deep-seated fear of death, a phobia that is buried so deep within our cultural consciousness that few people are able to reflect upon it. And body hair is just the tip of the iceberg, really. Think of people who inject neurotoxins into their facial muscles in order to banish every trace of aging; or of people who pay horrendous sums for cosmetic surgery, having their faces cut up into a crude mockery of youthful inviolacy.
People can't stand the thought of aging; aging is equated with decay, and decay is but the first step towards total annihilation. Never mind that people may also grow wiser, more experienced, or even more beautiful. Youth has its charms, without doubt, but who'd desire to remain a teenager forever, and a pre-pubescent one at that?
So, I conclude these ramblings with a little invitation to all of you: dare to be an adult! Don't become another casualty in the ongoing infantilization of society!
Or, to say it with the slightly modified words of an old christmas song: Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow!
