Bible Translations and Tradition

Posted 23rd November 2011 at 06:04 PM by AMR
I prefer the Byzantine manuscript tradition for my New Testament Bible translations, e.g., KJV or NKJV.

I use the two Englishman's Greek and Hebrew concordance volumes often when working with the Hebrew and the Greek. I often work directly with the The Greek New Testament for Beginning Readers: The Byzantine Greek Text & Verb Parsing and The New Testament in the Original Greek (Greek Edition).

Just in case anyone is wondering, I am not a KJBOnlyist. In fact, I readily...

Works and Faith - James vs. Paul

Posted 1st November 2011 at 01:37 PM by AMR
Paul teaches us that attempts by men to overcome their limitations through works to seek approval by God are in vain--man's vanity. For Paul, man must acknowledge his unworthiness and place all their confidence in God's mercy for man's acceptance before Him.

When James speaks of faith and works, he does not use the same definitions as does Paul in Romans 4, so anyone claiming Paul and James are at odds fails to understand them both.

Why Jesus Had to Die

Posted 22nd October 2011 at 01:12 PM by AMR
1. God exists. (Gen. 1:1)
2. God is infinite. (Psalm 90:2, 147:5; Jer. 23:24)

4. God is righteous. (Neh. 9:32-33; 1 Thess. 1:6)
5. Therefore, God is infinitely holy and just.

6. Furthermore, God speaks out of the character of what He is. (Matt. 12:34)

7. God spoke the Law. (Ex. 20:1-17)

8. Therefore, the Law is in the heart of God and is a reflection of God's character since it is Holy...

Ought Implies Can?

Posted 21st October 2011 at 10:10 PM by AMR
Quote:
Ought implies can.
The question of the difference between ought and can (with regard to man) is important, just as is the matter of relating the will of God to the manner of its expression.

There is no ought to with regard to God's behavior—whatever God wills for himself is right ethically, and aligns with God’s being and knowledge. If some evil is permitted to be done by some creature, the proper response by believers is to view it as allowed for the greater purpose...

Liberty of Spontaneity - True Free Will

Posted 21st October 2011 at 12:24 AM by AMR
We are just not as free as we tend to think we are. So when "free will" is bandied about, persons need to carefully define what that really means to one another before the conversation can even proceed.

The Reformed view of free will is that all men possess the liberty of spontaneity, the self-determined freedom to choose according to one's greatest inclinations at the moment they choose, and that man's choices are always in keeping with man's nature.

Reformed...
