FAITH IS THE EVIDENCE:

FAITH is the EVIDENCE of things not seen.

1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
-Hebrews 11:1

FAITH is THE EVIDENCE. Notice that it does not say that FAITH is A EVIDENCE, but rather that FAITH is THE EVIDENCE.

What is EVIDENCE? I love this definition:

FAITH IS A SUBSTANCE:

FAITH is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for.

FAITH is a REAL THING.

FAITH is so REAL that it is called a SUBSTANCE by the writer of Hebrews. That is, it has a tangible real existence of its own.

WHAT FAITH IS

WHAT FAITH IS NOT:
Sometimes it helps to discover what something is not, before trying to understand what it is. If we can rule out some common misinterpretations, we can narrow the parameters within which an accurate definition can be constructed.

Biblical Faith is NOT:

believing that God exists, or-
believing that God is real

This can be proven scripturally. The Bible tells us that the devils believe there is a God, and yet they do not...

HOW FAITH COMES

So faith comes by hearing, and hearing comes by way of the Word of God. We all know that intellectually, and most of us can quote you chapter and verse.

The writer did not say that faith comes by hearing the Word only. Rather, faith comes by hearing, AND hearing by the Word of God.

I think many are misunderstanding the gift of discerning of spirits which is found in 1 Corrinthians 12:
